GreyShadow
06.16.20 | aight sputnik, make this la disputecore sadboi a deathmetal head |
Keyblade
06.16.20 | I would say start with some melodeath like In Flame's The Jester Race
the album that got me into dm was The Chasm's Farseeing the Paranormal Abysm and Death's Symbolic. who knows might work for u too |
ian b
06.16.20 | you don't, is how |
parksungjoon
06.16.20 | atheist - unquestionable presence |
ian b
06.16.20 | nah but check out Atheist;s Unquestionable Presence by Atheist, that's the first DM album i could jam front to back and thoroughly enjoy almost every moment of. but if you want something newer, check out the last two Shadow of Intent records because ohhhhhhhmyyyygOOOODDDDD their material is absolutely fantastic, for fans of the genre and for those who necessarily arent. oh and Intestine Baalism is a cool dm project that have some of the best meat n potatoes type death metal out there.
also just before it starts, a lot of people are gonna comment "[something] ULCERATE [something something]" so be prepared for that |
GreyShadow
06.16.20 | i actually do remember enjoying Atheist quite a bit |
ian b
06.16.20 | dammit parksungjoon why couldn't you wait for my unnecessarily long paragraph to get posted smh, but yeah Atheist is prob the best older band to start with |
GreyShadow
06.16.20 | i'm only gonna likely listen to a handful of these before giving up again. i'll put everything thus far on the list, thanks guys |
ian b
06.16.20 | only listen to my recs. i am the only objectively correct death metal fan on sputnik. if your opinion isn't mine, you're wrong. if your opinion is mine, it's still wrong because it's not coming from me. jam my recs unless you want to be wrong too. |
Source
06.16.20 | burn your contortionist and btbam merch |
ian b
06.16.20 | hey now, that's what us intellectuals would call a "bad idea"
anyways BTBAM had a godtier discography until they started trying to be Dream Theater but that's just my two cents lol |
zaruyache
06.16.20 | just check Bolt Thrower's Those Once Loyal. It's a riff-fest and quite accessible. |
evilford
06.16.20 | Damn ian get timestamped :D
But yeah check grotesque |
evilford
06.16.20 | In all seriousness key, park and ian are right, death and atheist are huge gateway bands |
wildinferno2010
06.16.20 | atheist - unquestionable presence [3]
Just google a list of great death metal albums and listen to a bunch of them. Death, Pestilence, Morbid Angel, etc. Deicide aren't really one of my favourite bands anymore but I remember them being pretty accessible when I was getting into dm |
evilford
06.16.20 | Gorguts is in my obvious, annoyingly overstated opinion, the best dm band. All 5 of their LP's are at least amazing, and a few of them are genre classics. But they can also be a gateway band, they were for me at least.
Try out colored sands by gorguts if you're feeling frisky
But yes pestilence and morbid angel are also iconic dm bands |
ian b
06.16.20 | what does timestamped mean i'm PRESSED |
evilford
06.16.20 | I just meant park beat u to the punch w/ atheist!
Sucks cuz you probably started typing that before he did |
Dewinged
06.16.20 | But Grey, do you want deathcore? or just old school Death Metal? or anything close to the above albums? Cause we are talking about 3 very different things here haha |
ian b
06.16.20 | oh duh my bad sorry im on a few things rn, but yeah i was typing before him almost definitely so thats why i made da joke! haha get it! it's a funny!!!! |
ian b
06.16.20 | also dewi, i think he's just asking for anything that is heavily influenced or is majorly based on death metal yknow? |
Ziggity
06.16.20 | atheist - unquestionable presence [4]
And this isn’t dm, but check he is legend - I am Hollywood if you haven’t already. Seems up your alley. |
FR33L0RD
06.16.20 | Many great suggestions for you in here, GreyShadow.
Good exploration to you.
..and continu to keep an open mind, always essential, but you already know that ;) |
deathofasalesman
06.16.20 | atheist [1000]
gorguts - the erosion of sanity
orgone - the goliath
ulcerate - everything is fire
|
Dewinged
06.16.20 | I see, I see. Influenced but not 100% DM... Ummm...
Soilwork - Natural Born Chaos (it opened the melodeath genre for me)
Full of Hell - Weeping Choir (sort of mixes a lot of influences, death, grind, hardcore, with DM being the main ingredient)
Ossuarium - Living Tomb (Take a peek also into how old school DM sounds nowadays)
And finally check also Entombed - Wolverine Blues (Death'n'Roll baby!) (Or Kvelertak's debut if you want a modern take on the mix). |
JayEnder
06.16.20 | If you liked a song from 5, please do me and yourself a favor and listen to the entire album :]
Also definitely check out Blood Incantation if you haven't. |
wildinferno2010
06.16.20 | Dunno how much of a gateway album it can be, but one of my other favourites has always been none so vile by cryptopsy.
Also Dethklok, I think they were the first time I'd ever been able to get into anything remotely death metal. Watch Metalocalypse, it's good fun. |
Keyblade
06.16.20 | actually now that I think of it, the album that really got me into dm was Dark Lunacy - The Diarist. v beautiful album with an interesting concept (the siege of Leningrad) and vocals where u can actually make out the lyrics |
aydross121
06.16.20 | Bolt Thrower - Those Once Loyal [2] |
Coast
06.16.20 | You could start off really melodic/gateway and work up to the heavier dm:
Amorphis – Queen of Time
Chapel of Disease – …As We Have Seen the Storm
Rivers of Nihil – Where Owls Know My Name
Opeth – Blackwater Park
Death – Scream Bloody Gore
Napalm Death – Time Waits For No Slave
Obituary – Cause of Death
Blood Incantation – Hidden History of the Human Race
Atheist – Unquestionable Presence
Bolt Thrower – The IVth Crusade
Cryptopsy – None So Vile
Suffocation – Pierced From Within |
aydross121
06.16.20 | is None so Vile considered gateway? I mean it's far from underground but that shit sounds filthy af |
Coast
06.16.20 | It’s well known/highly regarded but not gateway. Some can dive straight in but Opeth was my gateway to black and death metal. Cryptopsy and Suffocation came a fair bit after. I roughly went Metallica - Slayer - Sepultura - Amorphis - Napalm Death - Opeth and then gradually bm and dm. |
wildinferno2010
06.16.20 | It's not but listen to it anyway |
combustion07
06.16.20 | Cryptopsy- None So Vile
Morbid Angel- Covenant
Amon Amarth- Fate of Norns (very melodic and accessible)
Gorguts- Erosion
Deicide- Deicide
|
combustion07
06.16.20 | Dark Tranquility- The Gallery would probably ve another good one tbh |
ZombieParty
06.16.20 | "how do i death metal?" listen to death metal and enjoy it. |
Scheumke
06.16.20 | Yeah I'd say start with something like Opeth (BWP, Still Life, Ghost Reveries), Soilwork (Living Infitine, Natural Born Chaos) or Ne Obliviscaris and work your way from there to more extreme bands. Those all heavily focus on a balance between agression and melody which make them easier to get into. |
Nerdurosis
06.16.20 | Bolt Thrower is probably the most accessible death metal band on the planet. Start with 'Those Once Loyal' - it's solid meat and potatoes death metal. |
TiedDown93
06.16.20 | Morbid Angel - Altars of Madness, Blasphemy for if you want to ruin your hearing. |
SpiritCrusher2
06.16.20 | Death is the best gateway band imo |
0xME
06.16.20 | I wouldn't start out with the super technical/dissonant stuff a la Gorguts, Cryptopsy, Ulcerate etc, the more melodic/doomy side would probably be easier to get into |
Thalassic
06.16.20 | Check some Delusional Parasitosis |
NeroCorleone
06.16.20 | You might like Dying Fetus. They have a groove to them that not much other dm has. |
TheSpirit
06.16.20 | you don't do death metal, death metal does you |
Relinquished
06.16.20 | bolt thrower [###] |
Voivod
06.16.20 | Be sure to check Obscene (USA-IN), their debut LP is a mash of everything death metal. |
Inoculaeted
06.16.20 | Opeth was my way in as well. The largest barrier to entry for death metal is the vocals and Akerfeldt is one of the most dynamic vocalists ever. Even if you don't immediately vibe on his growls, he'll hit you with melodic cleans that mix it up. Over time you may come to look forward to the growl. |
GreyShadow
06.16.20 | Okay, I'm gonna listen to like 5-10 of these over the next few weeks and I'll make a follow up list to this. wayyyyyyyy to many recs so i'll compile the most rec'd/ones with my favorite descriptions. |
JokineAugustus
06.16.20 | Just listen to Obscura (the album) Congratulations you just beat death metal. |
Keyblade
06.16.20 | good thing u specified the album otherwise u would've put him off dm forever lol |
Inoculaeted
06.16.20 | Obscura is like a genre unto itself. |
0xME
06.16.20 | Obscura is the album you recommend to someone if you want to make sure they'll never listen to death metal |
aydross121
06.16.20 | Yeah lol. When a thread like this arises there is always someone that unironically goes straight to the fucking gorguts and demilich recs. |
Nerdurosis
06.16.20 | yeah gorguts and dem are def not entry level dm dafuq lmao |
wildinferno2010
06.16.20 | Counter point - sometimes people click more easily with the weirder shit. Could see how someone who's only vaguely familiar with dm might find Obscura more interesting than Considered Dead |
Inoculaeted
06.16.20 | Yea least appropriate rec. That's for the "How do I finish dm?" thread. |
Demon of the Fall
06.16.20 | Death and Atheist are good calls, both helped me get into the genre (arriving at that juncture via Opeth).
If you want to try something a little more ‘current’ then Blood Incantation and Horrendous could work.
Apart from early Death they all have prog leanings, so that might help.
Alternatively you could just go for the more immediately catchier stuff but that’s also more stereotypical of earlier DM, Bolt Thrower or (early) Entombed would be my suggestions (along with early Death because the lyrics are so quotable/easier to decipher than most). |
Keyblade
06.16.20 | still think melodeath is a good place to start |
Demon of the Fall
06.16.20 | The melo-death thing never really worked for me as a gateway to DM, for some reason. That’s not to say I don’t enjoy it occasionally. |
Source
06.16.20 | surprised no one has mentioned nespithe
that ones like the litmus test for whether or not you're a pussy |
Madbutcher3
06.16.20 | vader is a super easy gateway band for dm cus they're basically just slayer with a bit more extremity
otherwise yeh, Atheist, Bolt Thrower, Hypocrisy. early florida dm is in general pretty easy to get into so maybe deicide, resurrection, morbid angel, w/e |
ElioG
06.16.20 | You begin with:
Carcass - Heartwork
Death - Symbolic
Entombed - Wolverine Blues
If you like those, then proceed:
Morbid Angel - Blessed are the Sick
Cryptopsy - None so Vile
Sepultura - Beneath the Remains
If you like those, then proceed:
Atheist - Unquestionable Presence
Gorguts - Colored Sands
Death - Human
If you like those then ask Park how to proceed.
|
Demon of the Fall
06.16.20 | Heartwork/Symbolic (2). I’d forgotten about Heartwork, that’s some ‘melo-death gateway’ type stuff that I can definitely get behind for sure. |
JokineAugustus
06.16.20 | Sound of Perseverance would be my recommended starting point. That and Nihility by Decapitated got me into dm. |
bloc
06.16.20 | This is not a skill worth learning |
madrigal30
06.16.20 | fellow sadboi and idk i just only listen to Bolt Thrower and it slaps
|
