The 50 Most Fun Songs of the Decade by Grey
I ended up compiling a list of 100+ songs and I felt like narrowing down to the most fun of the fun.
All of these just have exceptionally catchy choruses and/or an incredibly lively vibe to them that never fails to induce a smile. In fact, they aren't even necessarily (and more often than not) the best track by said artist. I tried to steer clear of anything heavy but a few screamers still show up. If your favorite isn't here, it's probably still great :)
Ranked loosely by personal fun factor |
50 | | The Regrettes (USA-CA) How Do You Love?
I Dare You - (riot grrrl alternative pop rock) - The song that sparked the idea for this list. Who knew youtube recs from a few weeks ago could be this inspiring? Easily one of my new favorites |
49 | | Artifex Pereo Time in Place
The Straight and Winding Way - (post-hardcore) - Underrated band. Their last two albums are incredible. |
48 | | Mayday Parade Sunnyland
Never Sure - (pop punk) - Never was a big Mayday fan until around this time last year and that's mostly because of how good some of the songs on this album are. |
47 | | Pianos Become the Teeth Wait For Love
Charisma - (emo alt rock) - the only pbtt song you can dance to |
46 | | Taylor Swift Speak Now
Sparks Fly - (pop rock) - I always think this is the title track. Better than all of Lover. Almost went with Blank Space but this has been more listened to as of recently |
45 | | Rise Against Endgame
Help Is On The Way - (alternative punk) - i feel like this is the song that may discredit this list but i really wanted these guys on the list and this is by far the catchiest song they've put out this decade. |
44 | | Blood Command Cult Drugs
Cult Drugs - (alt edgy but catchy post-hardcore) - Her voice is sick and there is nothing else like this on the list |
43 | | Lorde Melodrama
Loveless - (pop) - I was gonna go with Green Light or Perfect Places but then I figured I might as well just use my actual favorite track on the album since it's so damn fun. Hard Feelings is obviously incredible as well but here's to this l-o-v-e-l-e-s-s generation anthem that was thankfully tagged on to the end of it. |
42 | | Banks The Altar
Gemini Feed - (pop) - still haven't listened to the new album but I doubt it has a banger like this. |
41 | | No Devotion Permanence
Stay - (alternative rock) - This song isn't on spotify anymore and I'm outraged. |
40 | | CHVRCHES Love Is Dead
Get Out - (indie pop, electronic) - guys, I seriously think this is the most fun CHVRCHES song. Gun was a suuuuper close 2nd and I understand that that would have been a pick that didn't warrant description but once this song grows on you it really sticks. The bridge and 2nd half of the chorus really make this. |
39 | | Tubelord R o m a n c e
My First Castle - (weird dancey indie pop cut from otherwise mathy uk post-hardcore band) - MUSCLES BURN IN THE MILKY WAAAAAY just listen |
38 | | Jeff Rosenstock We Cool?
You, In Weird Cities - (punk) - Jeff seems like a cool dude. we like Jeff |
37 | | Andres (USA-CA) Strange Memories on this Nervous Night
Quinn - (mathy post-hardcore pop rock) - This dude has a grand album in him, I can just tell. His vibe is exactly what I wanted for this playlist. The chorus is huge, especially the last one. |
36 | | Brent Walsh Are You Even There At All?
Moon Creep - (a capella, pop) - Lead singer of I The Mighty gives us this super sweet jam that sounds like a chart topper. |
35 | | Gerard Way Hesitant Alien
Action Cat - (alternative rock) - first solo Gerard Way song I heard and I'm so glad I did. This project is severely underappreciated. |
34 | | Phoebe Bridgers Stranger In The Alps
Motion Sickness - (indie alternative rock) - honestly less about the fun vibe, more about the catchy af vibe which can be surprisingly different. |
33 | | Coheed and Cambria The Unheavenly Creatures
Toys - (prog pop rock) - longest song on the list with a siiiick solo. |
32 | | Makari Elegies
Melt - (alternative post-hardcore) - many adays were spent listening to this on repeat. |
31 | | Better Oblivion Community Center Better Oblivion Community Center
Dylan Thomas - (indie alternative rock) - Motion Sickness but with the fun vibe. one of my faves from the year so far. |
30 | | My Chemical Romance Danger Days: The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys
Na na na na na na na na na na na na na na na na na ma na na na na na na na na na na na na na na na na
...
It had to be here. I'll forever say that the na's are actually what kill the song's credibility (the stupid intro probably does too but i like it). |
29 | | The Dear Hunter The Color Spectrum
She's Always Singing - (yellow alternative rock) - it's yellow. one of the best The Dear Hooks |
28 | | Lights Little Machines
Running With The Boys - (alternative pop) - always liked this one but it really grew on me over the years, beating out Toes. |
27 | | Mew +-
Witness - (dream pop punk) - Underrated album. This song really just feels like a dream pop on top of punk song and I love it. |
26 | | Grimes Art Angels
Kill V. Maim - ("pop for people who don't like pop" - my junior year operating systems partner) - i almost didn't include this but then realized I'm ranking this by fun factor so I had to. |
25 | | The All-American Rejects Kids in the Street
Someday's Gone - (alternative pop rock) - Beekeeper's Daughter and the title track were contenders but the way this song builds is too satisfying. |
24 | | Hands Like Houses Ground Dweller
Don't Look Now, I'm Being Followed. Act Normal - (alternative post-hardcore) - I feel like this song does it's job as a 2nd song on an album better than many others and that's my description. |
23 | | Anberlin Vital
Little Tyrants - (alternative rock) - almost went with Impossible because I thought this track wasn't the vibe I was going for but that was stupid considering it's pre-chorus and chorus are stupid infectious. |
22 | | The Strokes Angles
Under Cover of Darkness - (alternative rock) - The guitar and the chorus are just yessssssss |
21 | | Foxing Nearer My God
Nearer My God - (alternative rock) - probably the song on this album I have stuck in my head the most |
20 | | Hail the Sun Culture Scars
Entertainment Lies - (alternative post-hardcore) - It's like if pop-punk got the good ending. Incredible riff with a really powerful bridge which really emphasizes the meaning. |
19 | | Dreamcar DREAMCAR
All Of The Dead Girls - (pop rock) - the most intentionally fun song Davey Havok has been a part of and it's actually so damn good. |
18 | | Laura Stevenson Wheel
Runner - (indie folk) - Laura's known for making us cry but she's also got them perfect hooks. |
17 | | Thank You Scientist Maps of Non-Existent Places
A Salesman's Guide To Non-Existence - (prog rock) - The godly instrumentation will always be appreciated but it was this hook that sold me on this band. I'm so glad they're only getting bigger. |
16 | | Ariana Grande Dangerous Woman
Into You - (pop) - Greedy was close but I don't think I've ever been in a car with 5 friends, windows down, on a summer post-midnight screaming Greedy so... |
15 | | AFI Burials
17 Crimes - (alternative rock) - Yes, AFI was going to be relatively high on this list. it's me. Although it doesn't get the same recognition, this song really sounds like their next Girl's Not Grey. |
14 | | The Venetia Fair Every Sick, Disgusting Thought...
The Day I Set Them Free - (alternative post-hardcore) - One of the best choruses you'll ever hear, I swear. |
13 | | Silversun Pickups Better Nature
Nightlight - (alternative rock) - WE ONLY WANT IT WITH THE LIIIGHTS OUUUUUT is why this is here as high as it is. It's their 2nd best single behind Lazy Eye. |
12 | | Invalids Eunoia
Sherman Is Connector - (emo math rock) - I think this is the only song I've listed that's void of a chorus (hence why it's a little lower) but there are few songs that make me happier than this one. |
11 | | letlive. Fake History
Lemon Party - (alternative rock) - everything If I'm The Devil should have been. It's a lemon party! |
10 | | Brand New Science Fiction
Can't Get It Out - (alternative rock) - not just a manic depressive |
9 | | PM Today In Medias Res
Composing A Commercial Product - (alternative post-hardcore) - more like composing a catchy af song that actually makes me really emo. I almost didn't include it but the song is just too playful. |
8 | | The Front Bottoms Back On Top
The Plan (Fuck Jobs) - (indie alternative rock) - I'm glad I decided the Top 10 needed some Front Bottoms. I went with this because of how sugary the lead melody is. Too many fantastic moments here. |
7 | | Blaqk Audio Bright Black Heaven
Say Red - (electronica) - gotta go with the Blaqk Audio song that I would listen to the live version of for hours on end in like 2011 a whole year before this album dropped. |
6 | | I The Mighty Connector
Playing Catch With .22 - (alternative post-hardcore) - extremely cute track with one of the best endings to a song. One of this album's few masterpieces. |
5 | | Dance Gavin Dance Mothership
Frozen One - (post-hardcore) - the most scream filled song on the list which kinda ruins the idea of anyone using this playlist to attract a mate. The urgent guitar and the way Tilian and Job play off of each other end up making this one of the best DGD tracks of all time. The hooks are pure gold. |
4 | | Carly Rae Jepsen Emotion
Let's Get Lost - (pop) - Carly had to be top 5, you knew it. I went with Let's Get Lost because of how adventurous the chorus sounds. I find myself happily getting lost in it more often than not. |
3 | | Good Game Don't Blow It.
Latitudes - (math rock, pop) - listen to good game right now. Math pop should be the future and this song is one of the best examples of why. |
2 | | Tilian Pearson Material Me
Flutter - (pop) - Yes, Tilian is in the top 5 twice. Dude's got the hooks and the pipes for it. |
1 | | Icarus the Owl Pilot Waves
Werewolf Tea Party (Who Invited Valerie Boone?) - (alternative mathy post-hardcore) - Alright, I just want to do whatever it takes to get the world (or Sputnikmusic) to listen to Icarus The Owl and if that means putting them at the top of one of my (hopefully many) decade lists, so be it. I love this song so much that I made a loop of it to import to Smash Bros. The chorus is downright magical and it's not even the best part. This song dominated the summer for my friend group in 2016 and hope it does the same to yours in the next 2016.
Seriously a perfect song. I'm doing it no justice. If you so much as like fun, you'll love this. |
