07.25.14 | "don't say "I" too often. if you can ignore it all together do that"
Oh yeah for sure. It's not the writing I have a problem with really, it's putting all my ideas together and actually starting the review that I find to be the roadblock |

07.25.14 | Like Nocte said on my latest review, the best advice is probably to "don't overthink these things".
Just start writing and have fun doing it. Let your draft rest for a few hours or a night. Come back to it with fresh eyes and do changes where needed. Then post it to get scrutinized!
Just kidding about that last part. :] |
SeaAnemone
07.25.14 | You shouldn't "get the ball rolling" with albums that you don't feel motivated to write about.
Start by writing reviews for things you're passionate about or having interesting, different ideas about, and that you think you can speak about intelligently.
That definitely doesn't mean write some stream-of-consciousness, personal-experience-ridden 5 review for your favorite album (one of the bigger, more common mistakes here). |

07.25.14 | Good lookin' out clercq and Sea. Will definitely keep in mind. |

better reviews have some sort of thesis, like any essay
before you begin, ask yourself what main idea you're trying to impart on the reader, and hopefully it's much more complex than "this is a 3"
read reviews by lewis, conrad, robin, and downer as they all do this really well (and are rightfully heralded as some of the best writers on sputnik for it)
usually it helps to be able to relate the album to some greater trend or genre or scene or feeling or whatever |

07.25.14 | Nice Clerq, never thought I'd see myself quoted in anything related to "advice".
Still it works, just let the ideas flow, marinade and improve. Dat chef talk... |

07.25.14 | i don't care for the hat... Solskjær, '99 CL Final u know? |
Keyblade
07.25.14 | @Jac, that's definitely something I've kept in mind. Rushing reviews are not really worth it, as you always pick up on mistakes later on. Letting it simmer (how's that one Nocte), is always a better idea.
@Sea, thanks for the advice man |

Haha ah yes. Sick of the sight of him eh |

07.26.14 | If you want to get the ball rolling, just write one paragraph per sitting at least. It's one of those things where you just have to do it basically, and try not to be too personal in your reviews, unless that's what you're going for. |
klap
07.26.14 | definitely review the alvvays record |

05.11.20 | Keep a thesaurus by your side at ALL TIMES and pretend to have a profound emotional attachment to mediocre albums. Also use the word 'verisimilitude'. I don't know what it means but it sounds awesome and awesome sounding nothing words are perfect for pos'. |

05.11.20 | Seriously though, just don't force a review out, have fun with it. Write it and then read it over so that it makes sense and then think about ways you could improve it, rinse and repeat :] |
