01.18.14 | hey where did you see Only Yesterday? About a year ago I was going through all the movies chronologically, but that one (I believe) was unreleased in the US, so I would've had to ship in a German or Japanese copy, if I could get a reliable source to ship it. |
neurisis17
01.18.14 | needless to say I haven't seen it |
TMobotron
01.18.14 | Spirited Away > Mononoke > the rest for me (haven't seen everything yet though). Spirited Away is easily my fav so far though, and one of my absolute favorite movies. |

I watched it online somewhere; it wasn't the best quality but it was certainly watchable and very heartfelt. Definitely recommend it. I'll see if I can find something for you. |

01.18.14 | I've only seen Howl's Moving Castle and Spirited Away but both are great. I prefer HMC though |

01.18.14 | @TMobotron
Spirited Away is an excellent movie, I just like the first three more personally. Howl's Moving Castle feels the most "magical" to me, Princess Mononoke is the most grandiose and breathtaking cinematically, and Grave is the most poignant and effective in its delivery in my opinion. Spirited Away has a very appealing childlike and fantastical charm but it doesn't quite hold up to the aforementioned films in my opinion. |

I do too. You should check out Mononoke and Grave, as well as Castle In The Sky. Arrietty was different from the typical Ghibli ending so I'd definitely have to recommend that one. Castle is probably the most accessible aside from Howl's Moving Castle and Spirited Away. |
TMobotron
01.18.14 | The fantasy world of Spirited Away is just incredibly imaginative to me. That's true of most ghibli I suppose, but Spirited Away is just so charming to me, I feel like I'm part of that environment when I watch. I was a little disappointed with HMC to be honest, but I owe that a rewatch - only saw it once and awhile ago. Haven't watched any ghibli in ages either. |

01.18.14 | @TMobotron
Hayao Ghibli is the "classic" Ghibli, with the familiar fantasy worlds and positive themes (friendship, kinship, perseverance, etc.) so I'd say Mononoke and Castle In The Sky are probably the ones you'd be most interested in. Maybe Arrietty too, but it's a very different Ghibli movie in my opinion. Definitely rewatch Howl's Moving Castle. I think the reason I like it so much is the amount of creativity in every scene, every room, every situation - and the extraordinary elements of an otherwise ordinary world. |

01.18.14 | Hotaru no Haka
Mononoke Hime
Spirited Away |
neurisis17
01.18.14 | Yeah I think I looked for it on animeultima.tv but couldn't find it, I tried a couple other sites as well. Also this list needs Nausicaa... and Mononoke is the best |
TMobotron
01.18.14 | Yeah I think grave of the fireflies is amazing but I do think ghibli's awesome animation is a better fit for movies like Spirited/Mononoke |

Here's a link for you: http://www.putlocker.com/file/1859B30452557EAB#
See if that works. And Nausicaa predates when Ghibli was technically a Studio of its own in full force. If I included it, I would probably rank it above or below Castle In The Sky. |
Ending
01.18.14 | @TMobotron
Grave was an Isao Takahata movie, so there's that too. I agree that the general animation style of Ghibli is more suited to the fantasy landscapes that they are more recognized for, but at the same time I think that they're such a talented studio that they could probably make anything other than high-octane action work. |
TheSpaceMan
01.18.14 | I've only seen Totoro, Spirited Away and Howl's Moving Castle but they were all good and I'm not a fan of anime |
neurisis17
01.18.14 | oh shit I just remembered it wasn't Ghibli, I would still put it on the list, since it sort of gave Miyazaki the footing to kick start the studio |
neurisis17
01.18.14 | and thanks I'll definitely get on that |
Dunpeal
01.18.14 | Mononoke just got released on blu-ray. might have to import it since they're saying their are no current plans to release it outside of japan |
Ending
01.18.14 | Ghibli movies have a sort of universal appeal to them, and even though they're undoubtedly anime, they often are seen more as "animated movies from Japan" than "anime movies". They were definitely my gateway into anime, but getting away from dubs was tough. Getting away from subs will probably just never happen. |
Ending
01.18.14 | @neurisis17
Do it man it's great. Has a very relatable and "real" appeal to it. |
Ending
01.18.14 | @Dunpeal
That sounds worth it. Other than Howl's Moving Castle and Spirited Away Mononoke would probably benefit from a blu-ray release the most. |
XingKing
01.18.14 | No Nausicaa? For shame. It's so good that I named my band based off of it! |
toxin.
01.18.14 | the ones i've seen go as follows:
spirited away (fav movie ever)
princess mononoke
nausicaa
totoro
castle in the sky
howl's
kiki's (i watched this when i was ~10 but apparently it's better as a college student)

01.18.14 | I actually quite like this ranking even though I don't agree. Top five are probs:
1. Porco Rosso
2. Princess Mononoke
3. Howl's Moving Castle
4. Spirited Away
5. Castle in the Sky |
Ending
01.18.14 | @XingKing
I mentioned in the description that Nausicaa technically predates Ghibli so I didn't include it. Further up I said where I'd put it (above or below Castle In The Sky) if I did include it.
@Rowan5215
I fail to see a problem with that quote.
@Havey
I like it a lot.
@dimsim3478
Interesting ranking, I rarely see Porco Rosso that high, let alone in the #1 spot. Great film regardless. I like your top five too. |
Trebor.
01.18.14 | Howl's Moving Castle is one of the worst |

01.19.14 | bought Princess Monoke on Blu-Ray and had it shipped from Japan. Man it looks so good in HD. Blew my mind
and agreed howl's moving castle is pretty bad |

I still love it. I'd love to watch Mononoke in 1080p. All of those action scenes would like brilliant, and of course the beautiful backdrops and art in general. |

01.29.14 | Nice list! I'm just wondering, do the albums have some sort of meaning or correspondence or are just randomly assigned?
Anyhow, given that all Ghibli movies are great this is my take:
16 15 and 13 are highly underrated (15 especially). All of Takahata's are actually. 5 is not bad but not deserving a 5 imo, a little too childish (if you will). Porco Rosso is Miyazaki's most underrated movie I'm glad you ranked it among the first 10. If Nausicaa were to be included (with Maybe Lupin the III as well) they'll both be among the first ten as well. I liked 1 a lot but it is far from being my favourite. I'm kinda curious to know why it is your favourite tho.
Lastly, there's one missing, "Ocean Waves" which is not bad at all actually. |
SputnikSweetheart
01.29.14 | Also, thanks for ranking 6 so high! That movie rocks! |
XingKing
01.29.14 | Nausicaa predates Ghibli but it's totally a Ghibli film |

01.29.14 | Princess Mononoke > Whisper of the Heart > Kiki's Delivery Service > Castle in the Sky > Nausicaa
|
Ending
01.30.14 | So what I've learned is that everybody loves Princess Mononoke and nobody loves Howl's Moving Castle even though they may like it.

01.30.14 | castle in the sky needs to be way higher |

01.30.14 | naussica is miyazaki's best but if were going just ghibli then prob spirited away or castle yeah |

Albums were just randomly assigned. And yeah I like basically all of the Ghibli movies to varying degrees, though Miyazaki is definitely my favourite director of the bunch. |

CaptainSpacker
03.02.14 | Pom Poko is so underrated, it's such a crazy yet heartfelt movie I love it. I totally get why some people don't feel the love, it is about racoons and their magic testicles after all, but it's also about the inevitable loss of innocence and childhood. Man the ending tears me up. |

03.02.14 | dude u need to get on ponyo it rules |

03.02.14 | Totoro and Spirited Away are my 2 favorites, but you can't go wrong with Ghibli. Their worst stuff is still pretty damn good |

03.02.14 | I saw Ponyo last week and it was fucking weird. Fantastic animation though. |
Gard3n
03.02.14 | Where's Nausica? |
mike197
03.02.14 | Gard3n, Nausicaa was before Ghibli. Still a great movie though, one of Miyazaki's best imo |
Ending
03.02.14 | "My personal ranking: not counting Nausicaa since it's technically not a Ghibli movie."
In the description. Not biggie, just seems to be an FAQ from like a month and a half ago.
I do need to see Ponyo. I'll watch that today. |
