03.13.13 | people who care enough to have physical copies will probably just stick with vinyl and the random cassette tape here and there. i would imagine 20 years from now CDs being like what cassette tapes are today |
ILJ
03.13.13 | Nah. People thought that about vinyl records too and they're still around. Catching on again, actually.
People will always clamor for physical copies. |

03.13.13 | just get cassettes |

03.13.13 | I think we'll get rid of CDs eventually, but definitely not in the next 5 years |
Sapient.
03.13.13 | I still see plenty of people buying cds when i go to my local Newbury Comics. I feel like cds will fade off eventually, but not as soon as people in the music industry make it out to be. many people like myself still love getting a physical copy of an album |

03.13.13 | yes |

03.13.13 | I've witnessed a few artists releasing their album on a custom (laser engraved or something) thumb drive.
There aren't enough options for purchasing lossless files online, so CDs still have that going for them. |

03.13.13 | "soon we'll go back to using floppy discs"
yeeaaa the ones that were actually floppy! |
Calc
03.13.13 | No they will make CDs until the end of time. We will never see the end of them. |

03.13.13 | Eventually but not anytime soon.
1. There hasn't been a better or more universally accepted disposable substitute to replace it yet.
2. Defunct data and media storage devices are generally manufactured long after they leave public consciousness. There are still tape drives being used for long term backup being used in smaller data centers to this day. They're not the cassette tapes as you would know them but it's the same technology. CD's by comparison are still used heavily by the average person to this day.
Speaking strictly to music, there are still a lot of people who like a physical copy of something they purchase and there are plenty of people who are technologically far behind us (you won't find them here because intrawebz) or have no interest in obtaining there media in this way. What would someone without a computer or high-speed internet do with a service like itunes. Even if they do have a computer and Broadband internet maybe they don't have a music device or a smart phone... the mp3 would be useless to them. |
AliW1993
03.13.13 | Physical music will never disappear. CDs are certainly in decline but I'm not sure they'll ever go completely. Vinyl will last forever.
I buy every release from my favourite bands on vinyl and the odd record I really enjoy, but otherwise I still get CDs. Paying for downloads doesn't resonate with me whatsoever. |
insomniac15
03.13.13 | Even if they become obsolete, I guess they will be the deluxe editions of today. Still, too many people are fond of physical formats (myself included) whether CD or vinyl.
Vinyl is a bit expensive for me, unless I'll have a well-paid job. CDs are easier to find and more affordable. |
BigPleb
03.13.13 | What a lol fucking list |
omnipanzer
03.13.13 | I could see a further decline in physical media when storage sizes go down enough in price to not consider lossless formats somewhat prohibitive. You can fill a TB or two pretty quickly using nothing but FLAC. |
kitsch
03.13.13 | Auris Apothecary releases stuff on floppy
I will buy a CD over vinyl or cassette if it is available. It has the highest sound quality. Vinyl is really shitty i have come to hate it. Especially people who only buy vinyl. |

03.13.13 | computers are phasing out optical drives. CDs will still be produced but much less quantity |

This. CDs are not "creatively destroyed" yet. They are still used to store information in software, video games, movies, and others. When this technology becomes inefficient; then they will quickly phase out. In 5 years I imagine that stores will just have an even smaller selection of music CDs. |

03.13.13 | i seriously hope not |

03.13.13 | there will always be a demand but it will be a niche market
that is my uninformed opinion anyways |

03.13.13 | Hope they don't get rid of CDs anytime soon because I've got a collection of over 200 of them.
Vinyl will always sell though; I'd take the crackle of it over a CD any day. I'm slowly trying to turn my CD collection into a vinyl collection but it's expensive and some were never released on vinyl. |
Trebor.

03.14.13 | Spotify may be the start of that trend. If you have Spotify Premium on your phone, you have access to thousands of albums for 10 dollars a month. Plus, the desktop version is free access to all those albums. Just a thought. |
spillingmercury
03.14.13 | cds are on par with cassette tapes i guess. i like them mostly because i don't have vinyl, and i only like vinyl mostly because i think it looks better together in a library than CDs. Soundwise, I'm not audiophile enough to notice the difference. however, i rather make a playlist for my friend on a cd than hand it to them on a usb or package it into a zip file online, and i don't feel weird lending people my cds either since vinyl seems a little more expensive and less replaceable. |
tmagistrelli
03.14.13 | i work at a best buy store, and safe to say, i think it will be another 8 years or so. people still make a shit ton of money on those things. |

12.03.19 | I haven't bought a disc-based game/movie/album in years. Vinyl and Digital for bands I really like, and just digital for everything else. More and more people seem to be going that route as hard drives get cheaper and cheaper. |
Asdfp277
12.03.19 | cds contaminate more and are quite susceptible to physical damage :[ |
Willie
12.03.19 | That too... especially when just about every playback device is going to be digital. The days of dragging a book of 100 CDs around waiting for someone to inevitably break into your car and steal your entire collection are thankfully gone. |
deadcrown
12.03.19 | I didn't know shit when I made this list. And I still dont know shit now. But I know about a little shit I guess. |

12.03.19 | Yeah I still bump cds in the whip but only when bluetooth is acting up |

12.03.19 | i be online stealing people's files |
deadcrown
12.03.19 | I hear you Willie, that's a good point. do you prefer the sound of one or the other? |
Willie
12.03.19 | I preferred the sound of CDs at first because in the beginning (I'm old) 128 kbps was definitely an obvious step down, but in the time of 2.1GB hard drives, it was the best you were going to get. I'd say 256 kbps was when the convenience of digital was worth a little sound degradation. And now with large SSD drives and 320/Lossless, there's no reason for discs at all. |
deadcrown
12.03.19 | Wow you really know your stuff. I see what you mean though. Technology has come a long way. Wow! I guess I mainly purchase cds at shows nowadays if anything. |
Asdfp277
12.03.19 | i'm forced to buy cds sometimes because bands don't release their stuff online :[ |
deadcrown
12.03.19 | That's great that you do that. More people need to support bands that are just trying to survive! |
Morningrise767
12.03.19 | If it's an album I'm really hyped for, I'll buy it. Like the next Deftones album for example : D |

12.03.19 | LP's are coming back so I don't think so |
JohnnyoftheWell
12.03.19 | I love phys copies and generally go for CD over vinyl; cheaper and easier to store/play. On the whole I see CD being gradually phased out in the west, but it's going nowhere fast in the eastern market |
twlight
12.03.19 | I still like listening to CDs in my car. They sound so good |
Funeralopolis
12.03.19 | I doubt they'll still make CDs in the future. I can see vinyl for collectors only. |
