10.26.10 | yeah mainstream stuff is at an all time low imo. the other day sufjan was coming to my state and i was telling my brother i was pissed i had plans i couldnt cancel that night. he asked me who sufjan stevens was and i told him. i said he was pretty popular and my brother told me he wasn't popular because he didn't get played on the radio. made me fucking cry on the inside.
Not that it really matters what he thinks OR whether or not hes popular, but the fact that he dismissed everything not on the radio is ridiculous. |
JWT155
10.26.10 | Other then Creep I've never heard Radiohead played on the radio and they're one of the most popular
bands on the planet. |
theacademy
10.26.10 | never being in cars (no radio) + not having cable (no MTV, or TV in general, really) = I cannot even hum the chorus to any of these (presumably bad) songs |
theacademy
10.26.10 | "i said he was pretty popular and my brother told me he wasn't popular because he didn't get played on the radio."
wait but this is logical... |
JWT155
10.26.10 | Depends on what you define as "popular" and to whom. |
theacademy
10.26.10 | well, not necessarily. That would be a parameter for evaluating his brother's statement's truth or validity. it's logically sound regardless. |
JWT155
10.26.10 | Well if the aimed population we're analyzing are people who only listen to mainstream radio then sure. |
Curse.
10.26.10 | 5 is pretty good, even though it gives off a contemporary christian vibe |
TMobotron
10.26.10 | theacademy hes right to an extent, for the most part whats on the radio is more popular than what's not, but that's dismissing entire genres of music (most notably, ever metal and electronic genre, at least where I live). I think it's pretty safe to say Sufjan is popular, but I don't see impossible soul getting radio play anytime soon. |
TMobotron
10.26.10 | by he i mean my brother and the statement being analyzed |
theacademy
10.26.10 | no no you're taking it to far (adding all this stuff that has nothing to do with what his brother said):
"he wasn't popular because he didn't get played on the radio."
he assumes: all popular artists are played on the radio.
A fair assumption, based on the history of radio. No need for a facepalm. Reading relativity into the concept of what's popular is pretty futile. He's dismissing genres like 'electronica + metal' for a reason (they're not as popular/mainstream). And for the record Sufjan is insanely popular (maybe just not relative to Justin Bieber). Only pointing out that your brother's point was valid. |
theacademy

TMobotron
10.26.10 | I'm not saying it's weird to make that assumption, it's probably what most people think. My point is simply that he's wrong. |
