02.10.13 | The entire premise of Looper is nonsensical. Why not kill the guys in the present and just send their bodies back in time so that the "Loopers" only have to dispose of the body? This would eliminate any possibility of letting your Looper run or whatever they called it. And why did the Loopers have to close their own loop? Let somebody else close the loop so you don't end up seeing your own face thirty years older and having a change of heart.
Not to mention the film completely died in the second act when he went to the farm. It went from being a cool (albeit inane) technothriller to a veritable siesta. |

YOU MEAN TO TELL ME THIS WORK OF FICTIONAL SCI FI DOESN'T MAKE 100% REAL WORLD SENSE?? WHAT THE FUCK!!!! |
paxman
02.10.13 | It's not 100% real world sense. It's common sense. I'm supposed to believe that in the year 2070 or whatever, there's no such thing as sense?
I understand that in sci-fi there are bound to be some scientific apsects that aren't going to make sense. But this isn't scientific. It's common, everyday sense. |
ConsiderPhlebas
02.10.13 | The Hunger Games was aimed at a very select group of society, one that Battle Royale doesn't cater to. It's not a great film, but its competition is Twilight, and compared to that trash its awesome. At the very least it depicts girls getting shiz done, rather than waiting to become an eternal housewife to a fool she thinks is hot. The book is more nuanced, but sadly they shoe-horned needless detail into the film to appease fangirls, reducing the political and social aspects down to gimmicks. Something needs to wash Meyer's poison from the world, though, and kids stabbing each other is a start.
Cabin.. wasn't that bizarre to me. Was a light-satire of horror and the things which dictate its characteristics.
Spider-Man. DISAGREE. Toby Maguire spent three films staring into space and being an effeminate weed. The Lizard looked weird, but the 'darkness' is there in the modern comics and graphic novels. Raimi was stuck in the sixties. Gee wiz! The aunt in those films isn't even human, she's a diabetes-inducing grandma-tron 9000
Expendables is just trash.
Prometheus, urgh. Nice visuals, catastrophic story. Charlize Theron stands around doing nothing, sub-plots go nowhere, ridiculous characters (trillion dollar mission, and the geologist they find is an unprofessional, aggressive punk with tattoos on his face) and nonsensical alien things that do things without purpose. Jamming some Christianity in there was a nice touch, gotta dispel that pesky evolution.

theacademy
02.10.13 | paxman's point isn't bad, but it's also not the 'earth-shattering common sense' linchpin that he seems to think it is
i figured it was just cleaner to do the killing in the past, without all the biological evidence to tie the killers to the crime. Your question is basically: why buy into an elaborate hitman system when you can just kill the dude yourself? Well, in this future, we're told that this is the easiest way to do it (which may not make that much sense to us atm, but since there's this system in place, i can kinda see it working).
regardless, the movie's bigger problem is it's pacing in the second half... i can get past your main gripe pretty easily |

02.10.13 | Looper was the 5th or 6th best film of last year |

02.10.13 | Re: Looper
That's a good point, acad, and one that I did
consider. The rationale in the film was that it was
impossible to dispose of a body in the present,
which could very well tie into not leaving a crime
scene, any biological evidence, et cetera. But then
you see guys walking around with guns, getting shot,
even the murder of the Asian woman and the razing
of her and Bruce Willis's home. These guys are
essentially the mafia of the future. |
theacademy
02.10.13 | yea but the film is extremely hazy on what the future (bruce willis' future) actually looks like... like where he was living with his asian lady could have been on the other side of the planet from the area that the mob controlled... we don't know what kind of government had what kind of power, etc.
this is probably by design to avoid having debates like the one we're having... also to add some mystery to the rainmaker |

WeepingBanana
02.10.13 | paxman, both Prometheus and Looper require immense suspension of disbelief. The difference between the two though is that the characters in Looper fit into their world (which I'd like to mention was perfectly conceived for what it was) and took things rationally, making decisions they need to make in the world that they live in. Prometheus on the other hand was basically a spaceship full of retards doing things like playing peekaboo with a scary, foreign snake penis and doing retarded shit. My suspension of disbelief was basically in a constant state of shattering.
Also, I'd like to cite the scene in Looper where they're in the diner and JG-L is trying to sort out the logistics of time travel and Bruce Willis is like "who gives a shit!". Basically just a really obvious nod to the audience. |
WeepingBanana
02.10.13 | Overall though, Looper wasn't my favorite movie of the year or anything. barely top 10 probably and not as good as Rian Johnson's other movie Brick |
ConsiderPhlebas
02.10.13 | The whole film should have been Fassbender on his own, finding proper alien-aliens and thinking about the consequences of them getting to earth, with a bit of who-am-I existential stuff chucked in. Looper was a blast. |
paxman
02.10.13 | " the characters in Looper fit into their world (which I'd like to mention was perfectly conceived for what it was) and took things rationally, making decisions they need to make in the world that they live in."
I disagree with you there. It's true, I don't give a shit about time-travel and its myriad paradoxes; the point I was trying to make above is I don't care about the science--I care about the common sense, the choices they make, and the actions they take. Everything about Looper in my opinion is so deeply contrived and false. And I'm not talking about time-travel. |
WeepingBanana
02.10.13 | I'm not talking about the time travel either. Every logical flaw you mentioned though was more of a product of the world than it was of the main characters though. The main characters however, make decisions they have to make for the situation their in, no matter how illogical the situation is. |
