Butkuiss 11.04.10	I can scream; I do everything from metalcore to death, black and post-metal. As for your problem, that is quite odd. I'd reccomend resting your voice for at least a week or two before proceeding. You might have damaged something and vocal rest is really the only way to combat this. Make sure you're regulating pressure with your diaphragm and not blowing your voice out by going all out; it's happened to me a few times at practice trying to compete with drums and guitar. On the other hand, if you're out of practice and just coming back to it, you may need to just get back into the habit again. Make sure you're warming up before each set for at least ten minutes, and remember. If it hurts, you're doing it wrong.

You just have to get used to that fact. I was blessed with a curse-I hit puberty a year or two before all my friends, so for two years I was the meanest, hairiest deepest mofo in the hood. Now, of course, I'm one of the shortest guys I know. Point is. If you're still young, things like that are to be expected. Of course, if you're still young, you'll also have to be extra careful to not damage your vocal chords.

Masochist 11.04.10	CAN I SCREAM!? I think I can. I like to think I can, anyways...but I'm not good at it, and I can't get a lot of the sounds I'd like to do. Though, oddly enough, on days when my voice sucks and my throat's all scratchy, I can get some gutteral sounds I can't usually make.

Butkuiss 11.04.10	Here's another point. Don't let people tell you how to scream/sing. You have a range you need to work with. Forcing yourself out of that range is like telling a guitarist to sound like a bassist without detuning his strings. It's not possible, and it's just going to hurt. You have a voice. Utilise it. Don't let other people try and change that.

Butkuiss 11.05.10	Ha, don't worry. It still happens to me too occasionally. Y'know, you're at the climax of a song and your drummer is going wild and you just can't help but belt it out with all your might. But my voice is usually fine after a night's rest, sometimes even after an hour or two. Just keep refining I guess.

Thane 11.05.10	There's never really been a moment in my life where I've gone "hey i wanna scream lol". You sit in your room and scream all day, or how does it work? It'd be cool to be able to do hardcore/metalcore style vocals, but it just seems so awkward.

Strider 11.05.10	I'm sort of having that sort of problem, I was getting really good at fry screaming, and then I had vacations and a throat problem so I did practice much and now I'm only starting to get it back, but I can't practice, so I only do it when I get with th band. Screaming is more of a psychological thing than physical. I mean, you have to imagine the notes you want to hit, then adapt your technique to it. I just thought about that and am going to try it out this weekend, so that I don't fuck up my voice before our next gig. Anyway, just rest your voice, but do exercises every day so that you'll be able to do the notes you want, and don't forget to imagine them, then regulate the air coming from your diaphragm.

Strider 11.05.10	It's just like getting lows, only you open your mouth wider. Don't change the volume, just change the way you move your throat to let more air pass and get higher stuff. Try singing the note you want to it, and right after try screaming it. High screams came relatively easily for me, I suck at growls though.
