Castlevania: Circle of the Moon (switch) - 7/10
The first of the GBA Castlevania’s and also the roughest. This has the worst story and characters of any Castlevania games which is probably why it’s not considered canon. The main gimmick of this game is the card system where enemies can randomly drop cards and different card combinations give you access to spells and power-ups. It’s a neat system, but it’s way too grindy. A lot of the drops are like 1%, and there’s a couple cards that only drop from secret minibosses toward the end of the game. Also the final boss is notoriously difficult and the only consistent way to beat him is with a very specific card combination. There’s also a couple of optional areas that you can stumble into way too early and get stuck. Definitely a walkthrough at the ready kind of game. Still really solid. | 2 | | Bladee x ECCO2K Remote Utopias
Castlevania: Symphony of the Night (ps4) - 9.5/10
I thought it would be hard to go back to this one after all the advancements they made with the GBA and DS games, and boy was I wrong. The beginning is definitely rough before you’ve unlocked any cool power-ups. I played the first hour or so of this game like 15 years ago and wasn’t feeling it, but this time I pushed through and this really becomes the best Castlevania game the further you get in it. The combat is more simple than the later games, but the exploration is unparalleled. This is a classic game, I don’t have much to say other than that it’s a huge shame that this isn’t on PC. | 3 | | Kate Bush The Sensual World
Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow (switch) - 9/10
This might be the best Castlevania game. The souls system it introduced where you’re able to absorb the souls of enemies and use their abilities is so cool and so varied. This and its sequel on the DS have by far the deepest combat of the series. The story is OK, it’s neat that it takes place in the future. And the castle is one of the best. There’s just something special about SooN that this game doesn’t have. Still one of the best Metroidvanias ever though. | 4 | | Sum 41 Does This Look Infected?
Little Nightmares (pc) - 8/10
I liked this a lot more than I was expecting to. It reminded me a lot of Limbo and Ico with the puzzle platforming gameplay. The story is really cool, I love how vague everything is, and all the creature/character designs are awesome. There’s also a Spirited Away feel to it which is nice. Super short, super engaging game. My only complaint is that it’s a tad too easy. I’m looking forward to the TV adaptation being done by Henry Selick as stop-motion is a perfect fit for this game’s artstyle. | |

11.18.21 | Really hoping that the advance collection sells well, so that Konami has the motivation to do a similar collection for the DS Castlevania lineup. The prices of those games have been insane for years at this point. SotN is goat, but it's hilarious how trivialized its difficulty can become if you're willing to wear the Alucart set and do some grinding for broken gear. The crissagrim just shreks everything in the second half of the game. | Trebor.
