Max Payne (PC) - 9/10

I sure did miss out on this one. This game is fucking awesome, like one of the best third person shooters ever. And there’s no RPG elements or crafting or collectables or making markers on a map disappear. All you do is shoot guys pop pills and get sad. They had no money for this fucker so all the cutscenes are comic book panels and the makers of the game had to be the face models. Max Payne’s face is so iconic I made it my desktop wallpaper.

The only issue I have is with the PC version and the game’s adaptive difficulty. Every time you die, the game gets easier, and the longer you go without dying the game gets harder to the point that eventually it’s almost impossible. And with the PC version you’re able to reload your game before the death animation finishes, and if you do that the difficulty doesn’t go down. But you have no way of knowing that unless you read about it. So for the first half of my playthrough I had to save scum my way through because I would die in one to two hits to every enemy. So yeah, if you play on PC, let the death animation finish before you load.

Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle (switch) - 7/10
In the year of our lord 2021 I found out there is a Mario/Rabbids XCOM clone on the switch, and in the same year I actually enjoyed it. This is XCOM except your party is smaller, there’s a lot more variety in how your characters move, and instead of the phenomenal base management stuff you just walk around the mushroom kingdom and it sucks. This game is also too easy if you’re already familiar with the genre, but I actually had fun becoming a god and blowing through the levels as quickly as possible. The story is trash and I started skipping the cutscenes. The music is done by Grant Kirkhope and is really well done except for this opera song boss battle that sucks ass, but like how many people on earth can write a sick opera tune? Overall, it’s a lot more fun than it ought to be considering it’s a strategy game without much strategy.

Turnip Boy Commits Tax Evasion (switch) 7/10
I bought this game purely based on the title. It’s a really funny game and you do indeed commit tax evasion. It’s basically a 2D Zelda clone but with a much larger emphasis on character and dialogue, and the combat is not good. My main issue with this game is that it’s only 3 hours long and has no replay value. I got a lot of laughs out of it though and I’m definitely glad I experienced it.

Dusk (PC) - 9/10
Dusk is a boomer shooter with retro graphics and gameplay and it is very very fun. It’s like if Quake took place in a haunted small American town, but things quickly evolve into something more sinister and more alien. The sound design, enemy design, gun feel, graphics, everything is top notch. There’s tons and tons of really cool secrets as well. Probably my favorite boomer shooter overall.

Max Payne 2 (PC) - 8.5/10
Max Payne 2 is more Max Payne. You get to play as Mona a few times which is pretty cool. The story is just as good as the first one, and this one has even more of a downer ending. It’s on the short side, like 5 hours, but if you like the first one this is an essential play.
