02.09.21 | Above is some music that nostalgically reminds me of Nioh 2 when I have to eat and sleep and can't play Nioh 2 < 3 |
Gyromania
02.09.21 | it's pretty good but honestly it veers a bit too heavily into the 'git gud' territory of gaming obsessed with making everything a tedious grind. i found myself dying to so much cheap bs playing that game, which is a feeling i seldom had playing fromsoft games. sure there are the occasional 'gotcha!' moments, but in nioh 2 i felt like those moments were looming around every corner (also some of the bosses in this game can fuck right off). i also dislike the way nioh reuses levels in its game to pad out the play time. people can make the argument that they're not essential to play, but good fking luck getting through the main campaign without grinding hard |
BaselineOOO
02.09.21 | Disclaimer: I dislike all Dark Souls games but if I had to rate it would be DS1>>>Bloodborne>DS3>DS2. However, I really LOVED Sekiro, because of the combat and level design. DS2 is the only game I didn't finish (didn't like it at all).
Nioh 2 is easily the best of the bunch, no cheap deaths at all. Just like in Sekiro, when you die it's because you were a weak ass non-focused fighter. While Dark Souls series is full of cheap deaths and troll hitboxes character models. |
BaselineOOO
02.09.21 | @Gyromania I am sorry to hear that |
JohnnyoftheWell
02.09.21 | was on the fence about Nioh 2 being more than a good game, but the dlc + associated perks raised the bar for my character enough to give it legs. nioh in general is a deep dive or go home deal, and i don't mind the grind or difficulty issues; the game gives your character so much scope and depth that after a certain point the game's artificial difficulty should become a little arbitrary in the face of your build, strats and technique etc.. nioh 2 also reuses levels and enemies substantially less than nioh 1, so no objections there

yeah i just don't agree with this at all lol. fromsoft games are much slower and more deliberate than nioh games. some cheap shit does occur but normally if you take your time and study the enemies before just r1 spamming them, you can understand their attacks and movements. in nioh 2 i feel like it's absolutely required for you to die to bosses/enemies several times so you can learn all their moves. the snake boss is a great example of this. i had to die to that thing like 10 times to fully understand its moveset and all the cheapass things it could do. (also dislike how some enemies like the monkey demon thing can 1 shot with moves that take like 1 frame of animation to pull off - in ds 1-shots are usually heavily telegraphed whereas in nioh 2 they just kind of come out of nowhere at times).
i did have fun with nioh 2 though, although i never touched the dlc. the trial and error of the game is a bit overkill. i will say the level design is a HUGE improvement over the first game |
Underflow
02.09.21 | the entire soulslike genre is basically like the hot pepper game, i.e. one giant dick measuring contest. sure, some of the games are good (i beat bloodborne and dark souls 3, and they're good games), but games like sekiro and the nioh series seem designed to piss the player off as much as possible just like a carolina reaper is designed to destroy your mouth. |
JohnnyoftheWell
02.09.21 | weak take |
Gyromania
02.09.21 | i think there's merit to what underflow said. nioh does show signs of artificial difficulty, especially in its twilight missions, which are boring retreads of past levels that are over the top hard and worse yet, necessary to get to be a high enough level that the campaign is enjoyable. |
JohnnyoftheWell
02.09.21 | twilight missions are specifically for people who want to replay the same levels with an added challenge; i never once used them to grind in the ng campaign (and tbh i don't think i needed to grind at all at that point)
"games like sekiro and the nioh series seem designed to piss the player off as much as possible"
this is already weird in that Sekiro and Nioh are p much opposite ends of the spectrum; Sekiro is an action game mainly contingent on the player's mechanical skills, Nioh is an rpg contingent on their fleshing out a character and customising mechanics (more important than technically mastering them). both are deeper in their specifics than bb or ds3, much as i love those games, and so i struggle to take this take particularly seriously. it's fair crit to dump on both for having a higher playability threshold than any of the souls games, but that's on you after a point if you stick with them |

02.09.21 | i'm a console pleb alas, can't help there :[ |
Gyromania
02.09.21 | yeah agreed about sekiro - that game is fun solely because it's almost entirely skill-dependent. the same can be said of all the souls games too. nioh, on the other hand, is a case of "am i high enough level to get through this?" which is what slows the game's pace down for me |

Nioh is trash, nothing new there. Nioh 2 has better art design than all FromSoft games imo. I suggest you to give it a try, you won't be disappointed! |

02.10.21 | @zakalwe pc nerd here. You could probably build something like scratch for something like $800, depending on exactly you decide what to put in it. I am running an Intel Core i5 6600K, which is a few generations old now, and just upgraded my GPU to the RTX 3060Ti for $400. It runs Total Warhammer 2 (incredible game btw) smooth as silk and pulls off some bigger games on high settings without much of an issue. The buildapc subreddit is a great resource for this. |

02.11.21 | I've beaten every Miyazaki From game, but I've only gotten like halfway thru both Nioh games. I did prefer Nioh 2 over the first game and I plan on returning to it eventually. Someone said Sekiro was the easiest Miyazaki game, but I'd have to say Demon's Souls is, because most of the bosses I beat first try by merely using basic level spells. Sekiro, on the other hand, demands precision and a firm understanding of the mechanics. |
Brabiz
02.12.21 | Soulslike games suck.
They always rip mechanics and UI elements from the From Soft games, but always lack the atmosphere and level design. I have yet to play one that lives up to even my least favorite Souls game. |

60% of what makes the soul games what they are is the atmosphere. |

02.15.21 | I don't think Sekiro is the easiest FromSoftware game, quite far from that tbh, but I do think it has the most rewarding difficulty progression, it felt amazing to get the grip and slowly master the combat system with the deflects, stealth, and all of your tools when I first played it. It's also nice that you can approach levels, mini bosses, and enemies in a lot of different ways, making your own kind of thing to get through the game, which is awesome, and really raises the bar from the Souls series. I'm really curious in what FromSoftware can bring next. |

02.16.21 | Sorry mr baseline but you put “nioh 2” in the title when I think you meant to put “Devil May Cry 5” |
BaselineOOO
02.17.21 | I'm a huge fan of the series, but have you even tried playing DMC5 a second time? To count as the -greatest of all time- a game needs replayability, and Devil May Cry 5, unfortunately, is a bore fest on the second run. |
