Weekly DiscoRuns 1: The Dear Hunter

A couple of weeks ago I did a full Rammstein discography run and rated all the individual songs. I had a lot of fun with it, and so I decided to make a little thing out of it. Rules are below.

I will do a full discography run each week and you guys get to choose which band I'll tackle.

I will individually rate every song (or a top 100 if there are more, since Sput doesn't allow the lists to be longer than that). Guess what my top 10 is going to be. You get a point for each song that's in the list, and three points for each song that is in the correct spot.

The person that has the most points wins and gets to choose out of these five bands for me to do next week. He/she also gets to choose a band that replaces it in the list, so the winner always has five bands to choose from. This week I will start with one of my favorite bands: The Dear Hunter

A couple of small rules:
- When a winner wants to add a band to next weeks list, keep in mind my personal preference. I'm not going to listen to five+ albums of a band I don't enjoy. It needs to be at least on average 3-worthy to me. If you want to add a band I don't know, I will take a listen to a couple of songs to see if I accept it.
- LP's only. I'm not going to listen to every demo/EP the band has released. Exceptions can occur when a EP has significant value in the bands discography (for instance, with The Dear Hunter I will include 'The Color Spectrum').
- I will always try to tackle all the albums in a given week. However, I am not going to be able to listen to all 22 Jethro Tull albums. If I feel a band has too many albums, I will ask you to make a selection.

So with all that, let's get started with this weeks Discography run: 'The Dear Hunter'. Vote for what you think my top 10 is going to be. I will cover the following albums:

Number 8: Lillian
By far the best song from the entire Color Spectrum series and the only non act song in my top 10. I'm not gonna explain why its amazing, just listen to it, you'll know.

Number 7: The Lake and the River
Owh how I love that intro melody (comes back in Act IV right before waves). This song is amazing, so beautiful and lush yet dark at the same time. YOU'LL BELIEEEVE.. WHAT YOU'RE MEANT TO BELIEEEVE

Act V: Hymns with the Devil in Confessional

Number 6: The Fire (Remains)
Quite a bit better than The Flame (is Gone) which is its companion. A song that's easy to overlook with all the amazing songs on Act V, but this one is a dark beauty on its own that gets better with every listen. Its also a song that gets better in context. I have no idea how someone would rate this who doesn't know the story or the music of TDH.

Act V: Hymns with the Devil in Confessional

Number 5: A Beginning
The emotional conclusion to a fantastic ride. This song gives me shivers every single time. The first time I heard the ending it genuinely moved me on a deeply personal level. The death of the main character and his moving (or back, however you want to put it) to his home at the river and the lake is beautifully poetic in its own right, but pair it with the themes from the earlier acts and it gets deeply satisfying and bittersweet, almost heartbreaking.

Number 4: The Most Cursed of Hands / Who Am I?
Ah damn the second that guitar starts you know shit's gonna go down. It builds so slowly until it goes all out in a bonanza of outlaw-country rock goodness with juice for days.

Number 3: Mustard Gas
Maybe the most epic TDH song and one of my absolute favorites. From the very first second it comes in guns blazing. The themes that get re-used also adds another layer to the whole thing.

Number 2: The Old Haunt
My first contact with TDH, and first loves die hard. The Old Haunt delivers on every level. Close to perfect song and that buildup near the end still gives me shivers.

Number 1: A Night on the Town
Is this the pinnacle of what The Dear Hunter is capable of? Maybe, but they are so incredibly consistent that I think they might even top this in the future. As it stands it's clearly one of the high watermarks of their carreer. Jazz, rock, uptempo, soaring, slow, emotional, recurring themes from all the other albums, this has it all and more.
