Personally, I have huge respect for anyone with enough discipline and morality to subscribe to a vegan lifestyle (and not be a pretentious douche about it). Anyway, The Dillinger Escape Plan are not straightedge but are all for animal rights and some of their lyrics are very driven by that sort of tone (especially on their latest album). And, Rise Against aren't metalcore but they've got some pretty good songs with a lot of those sorts of themes present.

Smoking and drinking are perfectly fine in moderation; you don't get cancer from a few cigerettes a day and you don't lose your wife and kids because you drink a beer. These things are demonised because of the worst case scenarios. Driving on a busy road is a pretty bad decision if the moral objective of life is to live the longest possible time; where's the calls for a ban of cars? Sxe'rs equate drunkeness with weakness; why? We are all subject to our unconscious desires, including the capacity for self-destruction, so it's not like we're really at the wheel anyway. Getting drunk just changes your perception temporarily - the meaningless hatred of that is nonsense bordering on insanity.

If they'd never seen an alcoholic drink, they'd have been the same. Football caused them more damage than anything they imbibed, made them hurt others too. Using something which has a dramatically negative effect on your health, like heroin for example, is plain idiocy, but idiocy isn't immoral, it's just idiocy. For things like marijuana, which is used medicinally, not least because it is so safe, the illegality, particularly in America, was born of political reasons. Hemp was a threat to oil, and that wasn't acceptable. This is a recorded historical fact. The idea that drugs should be illegal anyway is useless. It elevates drugs to an edgy, cool status that is tempting to those wanting to rail against authority and puts money in the hands of brutal organised criminals. Legalise it, tax it to fuck and make it seem boring; that'd do more for the rates of addiction and drug abuse. Drugs just perform the role of the radical 'other', a thing which people can blame all society's ills on. Look back in history at all the major atrocities humanity has perpetrated; none of them were caused by drugs or drink. There will never be a societal ideal, human nature isn't capable of it, and blaming things which exacerbate it is pointless.
