Inveigh 04.21.10	yea my objectivity's pretty high and I'd say only about 100 of my near 750 ratings are 4.5's or 5's... also, sometimes old comments can be deceiving if an album's a grower. but then again, I do see some weird stuff, plus there's troll ratings to account for (like when World Painted Blood leaked last fall and there were like 20 people that thought it would be funny to rate it a 5)

Enotron 04.21.10	I disagree Ghost. Rating albums helps me organize my tastes, come back to records that I haven't listened to in a while, plus it just helps me put my music taste into perspective. Sure disorder is kind of beautiful, but it's amazing how many records I would have forgotten about without sputnik.

Knott- 04.21.10	what lewis said also the whole 5=classic thing is not something i subscribe to, i know that's what it SAYS but to not give anything new a 5 is to be a fuckin' coward and not have the courage of your convictions. i tend to rate things highly because i dont listen to music i dont enjoy very often any more. unless i expect to enjoy it and then dont. still, i think youre being way too dramatic about how objective and tight you think people should be when they rate things.
Zizzer 04.21.10	I agree with the people viewing not very good as a 3 or 3.5 part, but I don't agree with not being able to rate new albums 5's. I don't think older albums should be given more of a chance to be 5's than new ones. I'm not one to rate albums a 5 just because they were revolutionary. For example, Led Zep I and Are You Experienced? could very easily be classified as classics, but while I do enjoy them, I personally don't enjoy them enough to give them a 5 just because they were influential albums.

Edwin 04.21.10	I agree with you to an extent. My problem is that I just don't seem to come across enough albums that I dislike enough to give less than a 2.5/3. So it kind of fucks up my objectivity.

Yeahtoast 04.21.10	I agree, I tend not to listen to or albums I know I'll rate less than a 3, unless it's one I've had a previous experience of. That or when an album you think you'll enjoy doesn't live up to your expectations, that sucks. If I think an album is really superb, couldn't be any better and desrves a 5, man, I'll give it a 5. Regardless of whether it's new or old.

SeaAnemone 04.21.10	the Sputnik ratings were constructed under the assumption that the listener actively seeks out music that appeals to him, hence the ratings aren't balanced perfectly with good and bad ratings, and lean towards giving more variability and discretion on the "good" end of the spectrum. Makes perfect sense.
RiseToRemain 04.21.10	Totally agree with Brylawski and good call on discussing this...main thing is that most users here regulate and adjust their ratings based on an objectivity percentage system which has a common sense of statistics formula which they have obviously understood how it works ("I ll rate this album with a 3 and then the other with a 5 and then this with a 5 also...oups! objectivity percentage fell...ill just give it a 3 then) therefore their ratings most probably dont reflect their REAL thoughts/opinion on the album as they are fixed by them in such a way so as to hit high objectivity percentages and "feel cool" "accepted" and "wise"...the whole objectivity percentage stat is misrepresentative and should had been regulated only by submiting a review for an album...this would entail the stating of ARGUMENTS and ratings would therefore be more representative because very few people have the capability of writing a solid review to support their opinion whilst others cant or wouldnt really bother... p.s = and it's not just high rated shit albums...same goes for classic albums getting shit ratings... p.p.s = someone should make a list of unreasonably high rated albums or unreasonably low rated albums

theacademy 04.21.10	as for ratings, i did read your list description, and I am probably the worst offender on the site whose ratings aren't routinely deleted. I really don't respect the ratings system, because the site itself doesn't. I like to play with my pie chart, piss off robertsona, boost Atreyu's ratings, try and campaign for people to give 3Oh!3 a 1, have my album rating come up when I post in the MPP threads, and just have a good time with it all. Most people who either humor me or ignore me can figure out what I really like, and I make a lot of lists, too, usually say something about music even if it's about almond milk (but sometimes i don't...but in those cases, people can infer that the albums shown are "digs")

Fugue 04.21.10	Totally get what you're saying and I agree to some extent. People rating whole bands discography's at a five annoy me particularly and personally I feel an album can only be a five if it's the band's beat. Saying that, there have been a couple of occasions where I have had to reign in a bunch as my ratings were getting out of hand. Since the last time (about October) I've pretty much managed to keep a hold on things. Not really sure where I'm going with this so I'll stop now.

People need to realize that a 4 rating is indeed excellent. I think a staff blog discussing the ratings would be nice. And it would also be cool if we could see album rating averages to the one-hundredth decimal place since there are tons of 3.6's and 3.7's.
