Post-Metal Starter Pack

20 bands. 20 earth-shattering albums I hold in high regard. Tons of albums I missed because some bands churn out orgasmic post-metal like it ain't no thang but I tried to keep it to one-per-band. Make sure you have a sufficient supply of napkins when listening to any of these be it for tears or "the other reason you would need napkins".
1Agalloch
The Mantle

I know it's technically black metal, but the instrumentation indeed has post-metal flavor all over it and it's a fucking amazing album so just listen to it anyways.
2Amenra
Mass V

So bleak, so beautiful.
3Ashes and Iron
The Wind Takes a Side

Instrumental post-metal in the vain of Cult of Luna, but very well done and mesmerizing.
4Bossk
.2

An EP of epic proportions. "Truth" might be one of my all-time favorite post-metal tracks.
5Cult of Luna
Somewhere Along the Highway

I mean you could probably choose almost any album after "The Beyond", they're all amazing. This one is commonly hailed as their best though.
6Cult of Luna and Julie Christmas
Mariner

Yes, it's the same band as above but I think the addition of Julie Christmas makes it different enough to warrant a second shoutout and this is certainly an amazing album.
7Crib45
Marching Through the Borderlines

Underrated, planet-crushing post-metal from Finland that will have you clutching your old teddy bear and hiding under your blankets like the little wuss you still are deep down.
8Dirge
Hyperion

Their more recent album is my pick because of how streamlined and consistent a listen it is versus their other records.
9Fall of Efrafa
Inle

THE KIIIING IIIS DEEEAAD!!! WE BOOOUUNNNDD HIS FAAAACCCE!!! This is one punishing and long-winded album. Enter at your own risk.
10Intronaut
Prehistoricisms

Their newer stuff isn't really post-metal anymore, but back in the day they released this and it was an incredibly fresh take with hints of jazz fusion littered everywhere. These guys have probably one of the most talented bassists out there right now too.
11Irreversible
Sins

Typical stuff but what I really find particularly refreshing about this album is the many different styles of post-metal they try on here. Keeps it interesting the whole way through.
12Isis
Panopticon

Genre classic. Either this or "Oceanic" and you'll be golden.
13Izah
Sistere

Very underrated post-metal from 2015. if you have the patience for songs that are all above the 10-minute mark this album is incredibly rewarding.
14Neurosis
Through Silver in Blood

Could probably pick a ton of their albums but no other one really hit the mark for me like this one did.
15Obscure Sphinx
Void Mother

I could honestly put this or their most recent album "Epitaphs". I picked this because this would technically be the better starting point.
16Rosetta
The Galilean Satellites

Genre classic, heaviest the band ever got. I used to hate this guy's vocals but after being subjected to them enough my opinion has changed.
17Russian Circles
Empros

The moment when Russian Circles finally grew a pair and became the band they were always meant to be.
18Sarin
Burial Dream

Not genre legends by any means, and probably a little too close in sound to Isis. But this is very well-done post-metal for what it is and a great starting point for anyone looking to get into the genre.
19The Mire
Volume: II

If there's a title for "catchiest" post-metal band then The Mire sure wins it. They are broken up now, but god dammit they were good.
20The Ocean
Precambrian

Ignore the first disc (more on the metalcore/hardcore side), get to the second disc where the fun REALLY starts. The thing I'll always love about their old stuff (that their new stuff just can't match) is the dueling harsh vocals. One guy performing the lower (more death-metal) growl and the other with maniacal (more black-metal) shrieks. I hope one day they bring those back.
