| Aok's Top 10 From 2013
A little late to the party as usual, but better late than never | 10 | | Run The Jewels Run The Jewels
Sputnik darling El-P produces a solid album with cohort Killer Mike. While not as
attached as certain sputnikers (cough Adrian Hertzberg), it's difficult not to
appreciate what these guys are doing. | 9 | | Flatbush Zombies BetterOffDEAD
Though lacking a hit as catchy as 'Thug Waffle', the sophomore mixtape by the
psychedelic rap group, Flatbush Zombies, is more than a worthwhile follow up.
Impeccable flow and great beats that remain one of a kind. And if you take a step
back from the brazen tone and listen, they have a lot of wisdom to impart. | 8 | | Moderat II
Downtempo Techno done right -- my head bobs the whole way through listening.
Modeselektor and Apparat have lots of chemistry and this easy to listen to LP flows
all the way through in headphones just as easily as it does when with a group of
people. | 7 | | Saint Pepsi Hit Vibes
When Alex Robertson discovers an album and Adam Downer insists you listen, you're
flipping a coin as to whether you're going to listen to something that's over-the-top
pretentious or actually unique and interesting. Fortunately for Ryan DeRobertis of
Long Island, he's got so much talent that as more and more people listen, it will be
tough for them to do anything else but groove along | 6 | | Zomby With Love
Ramblier and more scattered than 'dedication', Zomby shows on his latest 33 song
LP that no one can do it quite like he does. "Horrid" in particular rings in my ears
even still after having heard him perform it live at Brooklyn's 'Output' | 5 | | Tricky False Idols
It has been almost 20 years since Maxinquaye, one of my all-time favorite albums
and a trip-hop classic. Tricky hasn't ever been quite as consistent sense then,
shying away from the spotlight and not knowing quite to do with the fame he has
garnered. 'Bonnie and Clyde' and 'Parenthesis' stand out in an album with many
solid offerings. | 4 | | James Blake Overgrown
How good is James Blake? In his 2nd LP he ventures off into a new direction with
more parts soul / RnB to go along with his mellow Dubstep vibes. 'Retrograde' hits
hard in a direction I did not think Blake was capable of taking, while 'Take a Fall'
could be the most ambitious and impressive track he has ever done. | 3 | | Darkside Psychic
I had the pleasure of hearing Nicolas Jaar and Dave Harrington's album live before it
was even released at a small loading dock in the lower east side. Very downtempo,
you almost forget you're listening to anything at all until a screech a yell has built
from something so small. Bone-chilling, enthralling and impressive every time I hear
it. Seeing them play again at terminal 5 on Saturday. | 2 | | Bonobo The North Borders
The best medicine for me when I'm feeling ill has always been lots of sleep, a hot
shower, a big meal, plenty of water and hefty doses of Simon Green's music.
Bonobo has always had a way of soothing the senses, and the more I listen, the
more I become convinced his latest release may be the best thing he's ever done.
Not quite lounge music, his easy to listen to music is modern trip-hop at its finest. | 1 | | Disclosure Settle
Perhaps I fell in love with an album that was overly simplistic. Indeed, Disclosure is
both significantly more upbeat and less 'deep' than the albums I typically dig, but
this house album has me jumping down and all around like no new album has done
for me in a while. And I can't stop listening to them. Looking forward to seeing
their performances at Firefly and Governor's Ball. | |
