Electric Zoo 2012

Brain hurts. Body hurts. Too much electro .. wait, when do tickets go on sale for next year?
1 Day 1
Friday, August 31

** Friday's when things kick off. Plenty of solid artists kicking things off early on I
either missed (Gessafelstein) or thought were pretty whatever (see below). Then
A-trak and others kicked things into gear a bit. Had Pretty Lights not put on one of
the most extraordinary performances I've seen, I'd have said the day was a
letdown, but Pretty Lights did exactly that, so wellyea
2jack beats
careless

wasn't doin it for me today =/
3Laidback Luke
Electronic Satisfaction

this guy's never really done it for me
4 Tommy Trash
Let Me Love You

this guy kinda got things bumpin but mostly not really
5Mat Zo
The Bipolar EP

* the place started bumpin for the first time
6Luciano
No Model No Tool

** really good stuff over here. A-trak was looming so I didn't stay as long as I
should have.
7A-trak
Dirty South Dance 2

* Good but never great. I even caught a 'Fool's Gold' t-shirt someone was throwing
out (everyone else seemed too nerfed out to realize what was going on)
8David Guetta
Nothing But The Beat

Ugh - david guetta ugh. I just remember some pink and purple lights and bleh he
wasn't always this bad.
9 Micael Menert
(Pretty Lights' Record label)

* gets a star cause he wasn't David Guetta. this was a quick warmup for the
headliner of day 1.
10Pretty Lights
Passing By Behind Your Eyes

*** I like Pretty Lights. I've always liked Pretty Lights, but I've never listened to
much of his music. But the atmosphere, the visuals, his ability to bring his sound to
life is incredible, and I'm very much considering going to a New Year's party in
Boston just cause he's playing there now. My roommate played Pretty Lights for a
half hour or so when we got home but I had to tell him to shut it off because it
wasn't the same. His take on 'New York State of Mind' was my favorite song of the
festival
11Kid Koala
Some of My Best Friends Are DJs

* It's always an interesting transition to go from the electric zoo vibe back to the
city at 11pm on a weekend. Kid Koala was working it out at Webster Hall though
for a sweet afterparty. He was having fun, he was hitting, he was missing, but hit
quite well
12 Gramatik
Beatz & Pieces Vol. 1

* solid performance. I was very exhausted by this point though and the Webster
vibe was weighing down upon me since I wasn't recognizing any bass bunnies (
https://www.facebook.com/BassBunniesOfficial )
13 Day 2
Saturday, September 1

Lineup looked just alright, but it was real solid through and through
14Claude VonStroke
Bird Brain

* Always solid but I thought he was better before (feel like I missed some people
by showing up late)
15Maya Jane Coles
Maya Jane Coles

* Good, but not as good as I'd have hoped.
1612th Planet
Ptera Patrick

* Bass Bass Pop sounds. Whatever the gimmick, they were working it out
17Dada Life
Just Do The Dada

** Good vibes coming from the stage. Didn't see enough of it though
18Kill the Noise
Kill Kill Kill

* Solid stuff. I coulda gone for a bit more Dada but they were a reggaer and
heavier dubstep version of 12th Planet.
19Rusko
Songs

Sweaty and unoriginal
20 Axwell
Seperdeejays

** Quite a nice display. Couldn't stay for nearly as long as I should but I was
thoroughly impressed.
21Datsik
Vitamin D

** For all the talk of how Excision was better than Datsik, etc etc. Datsik really
brought it home. TJani MC, a local sensation, was on stage for much of the
performance.
22Wolfgang Gartner
Weekend In America

* I like Wolfgang, I really like a few of his tracks. I don't like that he hasn't
changed or added much to his performances in a long time.
23Steve Aoki
Wonderland

Really sweatty, vibes were nothing special. Like Rusko, I don't understand why so
many people swarm to him
24Sasha
Fundacion NYC

*I remember this one being quite good
25Above & Beyond
Tri State

** Quiiite a nice end. Can anyone that knows something about them direct me
further?
26 Day 3
Sunday, September 1

The explosive end to an electric zoo festival is the highlight to any electric zoo
festival. I misjudged the market and ticket prices shot up locally as the show had
officially sold out. Ezoo Delivered
27Mt Eden
Mt Eden Album

* Good stuff just about anyone would enjoy
28 Krewella
Play Hard EP

Typical dubstep crowd. The baseheads were digging it more than I was.
29dj z-trip
Shifting Gears

* long bassy drops, and fairly explosive. he played zeppelin's 'whole lotta love' in
its entirety and i'm still not sure how i feel about it, but he went there so you gotta
respect that.
30Congorock
Babylon

A little animalistic for my tastes, but it was kinda cool i guess
31 Dash Berlin
#musicislife

This local sensation wasn't bad. Had kinda a pre-stupiddubstep-Rusko kinda vibe,
but after all the hype I wasn't very impressed either
32Bart B More
So It Goes

** I'd seen Bart B More before, and like before, I really enjoyed his set as usual.
Had to leave for Porter Robinson and as much as I'm ok with the decision, I'd have
been ok with staying put as well.
33Porter Robinson
Spitfire

** Porter had disappointed me last time I saw him, and after hearing horror stories
about his performance with Zedd at Bisco, I was wondering if the young sensation
had gone off the deep end. Flux Pavilion's "Let the Bass Cannon Kick it",
Deadmau5's "Strobe", Aphex Twin's "Windowlicker" (sidenote: why do crowds
always disperse when they hear aphex twin?) were clear samples held for a while
and Porter was just being Porter. He knows when to use another artist's beats and
has quite a few nice ones of his own. In many ways he's a more experienced more
accomplished version of Madeon.
34 EOTO
Fire The Lazers!!!

Strange electro guitar sounds coming from over there. Baseheads were sorta
buggin but mostly digging it.
35Apparat
Walls

** I had never heard of this guy but he was killing it over in the Sunday School
Tent. I was missing Zedd, who I was pretty excited about seeing, but at the end
of the day, I made the right decision.
36Knife Party
Rage Valley

Underwhelming
37Flux Pavilion
Lines in Wax

* Quite nice. Very bassy, very nice.
38Dev
The Night the Sun Came Up

alright. Kinda cool visuals from afar
39Benga
Diary Of An Afro Warrior

* I enjoyed what I heard.
40Zeds Dead
Rude Boy

*** Zeds Dead baby .. There's something about the unapologetic filth these guys
are spewing but it resonates. It's invigorating and it really is an atmosphere that
can only be recreated when DC and Hooks are playing right in front of you. Missed
Excision and Boys Noize in their entirety to see all of Zeds Dead, but it was the
right call.
41Tiesto
Just Be

It's just sad to see him as a shadow of his former self.
42The Bloody Beetroots
Romborama

*** I only saw them for 10 minutes, and I couldn't even recognize or place the
insanity that was unleashed upon me but it was pretty sweet. Can't wait to see
them in their entirety Nov. 2 (thanks Alex English)
43Diplo
Decent Work For Decent Pay

* Diplo was doing Diplo. Which is ok I suppose.
44Marco Carola
Fabric 31

* Sounded like Fedde Le Grande when I passed by which is cool
45Skrillex
Make It Bun Dem After Hours

** Ok. So you don't like Skrillex. Skrillex is the worst thing that happened to the
music industry since ... .. . . . . ... . you done yet? The strange looking Sonny
Moore (who is 1 week younger than me) has transformed music and brought all
kinds of people together in an explosive nature. With enough rage and enough
appeal to close out zoo, he brings a blaring sound to a huge stage that bugs lots of
people. But they got to get used to it cause he's here to stay
