02.24.10 | expectations are the worst thing to go into an album with |
bungy
02.24.10 | Yeah you sucked at listening to it. |
Athom
02.24.10 | maybe you just can't comprehend all the awesome that you heard. try listening to Slow Riot for new Zero Kanada first and then coming back to F#A# |
darthbarf
02.24.10 | F#A# is worth not giving up on bro |

02.24.10 | ^Yeah, maybe i'll try that. Because when an album is supposed to be that fantastic, I feel like it should be at least good the first listen. I just felt like "wtf?" |
po0ty
02.24.10 | Just feel lucky that your head didn't explode |
cirq
02.24.10 | i hope you choke. |
Athom
02.24.10 | was it the spoken word samples that threw you off or are you just totally not used to 20 minute post-rock songs? |
ihopeuchoke
02.24.10 | Most likely both. The spoken word thing i thought was kinda cool though. |
IanDavila
02.24.10 | maybe you are gay |
Prophet178
02.24.10 | Yeah it kinda sucks now that you mention it. |
SeaAnemone
02.24.10 | if you're anything like me you'll not get it for a while (I'm hoping you kinda at least appreciate it though maybe?) and then one random day come around and love it. just be sure not to try and force it. |
IanDavila
02.24.10 | just jk, be patient and let it grow on you, and one day is going to click |
Athom
02.24.10 | you might just want to listen to the new Mono cd or some Explosions in the Sky to get your feet wet. GYBE can be a bit daunting if you don't know what you're getting yourself into. |
somberlain
02.24.10 | "Because when an album is supposed to be that fantastic, I feel like it should be at least good the first listen"
I agree wholeheartedly, no matter how supposedly great an album is supposed to be, if nothing really strikes a chord with me after 2 listens, I'm moving on |
bungy
02.24.10 | Next time, turn off the light, lay down and close your eyes. |
ihopeuchoke
02.24.10 | @bungy That is how i listened to Kid A when that album finally clicked. Maybe it'll work for this... |
Prophet178
02.24.10 | "I agree wholeheartedly, no matter how supposedly great an album is supposed to be, if nothing really strikes a chord with me after 2 listens, I'm moving on"
Completely disagree. Some of the best albums are the ones that take time to sink in. |
somberlain
02.24.10 | "Some of the best albums are the ones that take time to sink in"
yea to COMPLETELY sink in but have you ever heard any of these albums the 1st time and said "what's the big deal?" |
Athom
02.24.10 | yes. I hated In the Aeroplane Over the Sea, Transatlanticism, and Boxer when I first heard them. Now they are all 5's in my book. |
somberlain
02.24.10 | wow! really redsky?
some albums took me a while to consider great but if I HATE an album on the 1st listen, chances are I won't listen to it again |
Satellite
02.24.10 | I was completely fucked up (had just seen Beastie Boys in Detroit) the first time I heard In the Aeroplane..., and it blew my fucking brain. I'll never enjoy it as much as I did then, and that makes me sad. |
Prophet178
02.24.10 | Yeah, happened to me with Animal Collective. Hated MPP for the longest time, then after a bunch of listens and hearing their back catalogue AC is one of my favorite bands. If I had gave up after the second listen it would have been dismissing a truly great album and band without putting any effort into it. |
Athom
02.24.10 | Tastes change, and sometimes you're just not in the mood for a certain style of music or something isn't what you had anticipated it to be so a negative cloud hangs over it for a while and when you finally come back to it when you are more open to it you can see it for what it really is and not what you wanted it to be. |
somberlain
02.24.10 | you see prophet I don't agree with "having to make an effort" to like an album maybe that's why I just stick to a few genres |
Lunarfall
02.24.10 | I hated Focus (Cynic) for the longest fucking time but I finally "got" it a year or two before they announced their reunion. |
DiceMan
02.24.10 | Lots of albums I had to wait for to hit me. Lots of metal was that way, specifically Converge, Botch, Electric Wizard, and Immolation. People just have preferences towards certain things or tolerances for certain things that others don't to begin with. Just wait, F# A# is one of the best albums of all time. You'll get it someday. |
Satellite
02.24.10 | Jane Doe took me fucking forever. So glad I didn't give up on it. |
AnotherBrick
02.24.10 | go read chans review for it |
somberlain
02.24.10 | I get that taste changes but I've never hated an album on the 1st listen then loved it later on |
Athom
02.24.10 | that's probably because you never listened to it again. |
somberlain
02.24.10 | yeah I did and I came to LIKE some of them but never LOVE them |
RedSky
02.24.10 | You'll give way to group-think eventually. |
Prophet178
02.24.10 | Yeah I used to be that way, then I realized if I wanted to get serious about music I would have to put in some work to get the most out of things I may not like on first listen. The way I look at it is, if 9 out of 10 people are saying an album is amazing and I don't agree on first listen I must be missing something. Almost 90% of the time after putting in some quality time with the album I realize what I was missing that first time.
Plus what Redsky is saying is too true; tastes change. Sometimes it just takes a gateway album to get you into a new genre that you may have hated before to open you up to a whole new world of music. |
TomServo
02.24.10 | If you think about it, GYBE is pretty hard to get into. The majority of music has vocals and also most songs are between 3-5 minutes long. It took me awhile to enjoy them. Had to start off with shorter post-rock like Explosions in the sky. Keep listening and i'm sure it will click with you.
Oh and I remember I hated Kid A when I first got it. I was 13 and got it through one those BMG music club things that my grandma has signed me up for. I was just way into limp bizkit and nu metal to understand what good music was at the time. |
TomServo
02.24.10 | oh forgot to say since GYBE is such an extreme departure from most music conventions, it takes awhile to get used to.
oh and i like panda bears! |
JWT155
02.24.10 | Completely agree with what everyones said above tastes changing. I've had Thrice and Radiohead's discography on my CPU for over 3 years but it hasn't been until the past year that both have clicked and now I'm addicted. If your under 20, you definitely have a ways to go and evolving your preference of music until you'll settle somewhere. |
MindTrain
02.24.10 | lrn2listen
You give a well-received album at least 3-5 listens before calling it a "waste of time". If it comes off as weird and you know you didn't get it, then this should be a gigantic hint to get into it.
The best way to know if something is shit is as waste of time is after you completely understand it, not when you don't. |
Acre
02.24.10 | Nearly all of my Top 5 albums are ones I didn't get till about the fifth (or more) listen. |
AnotherBrick
02.24.10 | post-rock must of just been very easy for me to get into because i was already into the big epic songs |
Gyromania
02.24.10 | "maybe you just can't comprehend all the awesome that you heard. try listening to Slow Riot for new Zero Kanada first and then coming back to F#A#"

02.24.10 | MindTrain's last sentence is the truth |

02.24.10 | Good album but I agree, hyped to no end! Post rock in general will never equal the power of post metal. |

02.24.10 | F#A# was my first entry into post-rock. I 5'd it first listen |
ReturnToRock
02.24.10 | F#A# is in my opinion the best Godspped You Black Emperor record. But yeah, it's not for everyone. |

05.06.11 | "Next time, turn off the light, lay down and close your eyes."
That is the perfect time to listen to it. I did and I dug it. Also, go out in the morning when it's still kind of dark and take a walk to it. Made me appreciate it more. |
