11.07.18 | US 2nd amendment and gun culture makes it complex and unique and perhaps impenetrable to change. After a decade of mass shootings Australia brought in tighter gun control and we haven’t had a massacre since 1996. 11.07.18 | @JW - She was heavily flawed, but she wasn't completely oblivious on how to act like a relatively normal human being in public (which is important when you're dealing with foreign leaders). She also seemed to have a bit of a grasp on policy while Trump would just repeat the same buzzwords over and over again. I mean there is a litany of things that I could go into that would be boring at this point because it's so obvious, but it's not pointless.
And I wasn't exactly wearing a Hillary Clinton shirt - I could stay up all night talking about her flaws, but the choice was obvious imo. |

11.07.18 | You're right, she wasn't oblivious, she was deemed in fact to be heavilly corupt and un-trustable by a large group of Americans for her actions as a politician for over a decade. I think demonizing people who voted for Trump does no good for anyone. If Democrats don't like him as a candidate, maybe instead of demonizing him they should offer better candidates and better ideas, because as of tonight this Blue Wave has been nothing and the Democratic policy of demonizing Republican voters and calling them racists, bigots, homophobes etc is clearly not working.

DarkSideOfLucca
11.07.18 | "I think demonizing people who voted for Trump does no good for anyone."
Yeah, I mean I get what you're saying. But he has just failed so many easy moral tests. Too many to name, but pretending not to know who David Duke is and immediately condemning him is just one example but there are hundreds of insane situations like that that just set such an awful precedent and are an embarrassment to our nation. Tweeting at foreign leaders and calling them names? Are you fucking kidding me? I know it sounds like hyperbole and people make fun of people for being 'triggered' or whatever, but it really does feel like the fucking Twilight Zone. And this is coming from someone who voted Republican in 2008.
Clinton was corrupt, yeah, but the Right also drastically exaggerated just how corrupt she was imo, and I dunno personally I would have much preferred an actual adult with experience as opposed to a fucking reality TV star who is crass and an obvious lack of understanding on basic issues.
The only thing Trump has going for him now is that the economy is doing well, but tbh I don't really think that's because of Trumps genius understanding of economics. There are many other things at play here. And 80% of Americans are still living paycheck to paycheck so it's not quite the paradise that many people are making it out to be.
"If Democrats don't like him as a candidate, maybe instead of demonizing him they should offer better candidates and better ideas"
Agree on the first part, but he deserves to be demonized. Sometimes the Left has lied about what he has said, and that infuriates me, but there is plenty there to criticize harshly and rightfully. |

If they preached about a party of true inclusion and acceptance and grew their tent they would have easilly won in a landslide of epic puportions tonight. Instead their playbook has been linking everyone on the right to Trump and labeling them the same names they call Trump, and guess what, it's hard to win voters when you call them names. |

11.07.18 | @Dark - I feel you man, I wish politics wasn't as polarizing as it is now, and honestly I think it's because we value politics too much as part of our social identity now. In the past subjects like religion and politics were considered off topic subjects. Neighbors didn't know where each other worshiped or who they voted for. Regardless of those differences people respected each other and heard each other out. Now, political identity has become a religion and identity to so many on both sides that people are unable to seperate someones political beliefs from that person or groups of people and it's negatively affecting the way we discuss politics and the way we communicate with each other. |

No one is flat out saying repeal the 1st amendment, but people on the left have definitely been trying to legislate on hate speech that goes hand in hand with the first amendment, for instance it could be considered hate speech under new laws if you refuse to acknowledge a trans person as the sex they prefer instead of that they were born as. I think personally you should treat someone with respect but I think laws like that are very dangerous to compel someone to speak certain ways, that's not freedom, which most key with 1st amendment is the right to be radical and to be wrong. In general the 1st amendment is supposed to protect bigots, it's supposed to protect those with radical if not terrible ideas, hence why the NAACP has defended the KKK numerous times for their right to speak. |

How is this calculated? Does it take into consideration incentives and how people approach savings given they know the system is there for them to fall back on right now? 11.07.18 | I think you midd the point. Sometimes laws and ideas are great in principle, but the ramifications and precedence it sets isn't worth it. Yes I agree people shouldn't be harrased in the work place, but is it the Government's job to officially legislate what people can and can't say? If given that power you can extrapolate it to radical ends, take no further look than a lot of countries around the world, including Singapore where you cannot say negative things about the Government. As a society you can believe it's terrible to harrass someone in the work place and also think it's not the Government's job to legislate what people can and can't say. |

11.07.18 | "is ppl getting shot up in places of worship an acceptable state of affairs as long as it's better than it ever was in history? I honestly don't understand why u guys are even making this point"
It's the same principal we have with our judicial branch and criminal courts, we as a country would rather let some of the guilty walk free then condemn the innocent. Hate speech laws will by default go too far and criminalize people who are not producing hate speech, it will politicize what people say, and more importantly I think it would only cause more people to become radicalized like the Synagogue shooter.
How does a teen or young person become motivated even more to do something, it's when an authority figure tells them they can't do it. Telling people who are radical that they can't use hate speech won't all of a sudden wake them up and let them see the light, it will only further encourage them to go down a very dark rabbit hole.
Plus purely on principal, don't you want people to be open and honest about their fucked up beliefs? I'd rather know the dude who owns the store down the street hates Jews so I can not shop there and spend my money there then have him quitely have his dark opinons fester while I give him money. Bad thoughts should be brought out to be loud and clear, so people can know what people think and so people can oppose those they disagree with.
Look at Germany, it's considered hate speech for people to say positive things about Hitler and the nazis. I agree with the late Christopher Hitchens that people should be able to say whatever pro Nazi stuff they want, that gives us as a society a chance to constantly look back to history, remember why we hate the nazis and to repute those who spew such terrible things. Better to have evil in the open and opposed then festering in the dark, bottled up and then unleashed when it can't be contained any further. |

If you think that the Nazi past in Germany is "bottled up" or some weird stuff like that is bullshit. Pupils there are confronted with historical stuff for years on end in school, including visits at former concentration camp etc, etc. That is also one of the reasons why the German far-right has not had any notable success, especially when compared to other countries in the west.

11.07.18 | I tend to lean on the right and Crowder is far from a great thinker, he can be entertaining but he truly does bait college students, he reiterates broad talking points, and he's in general more about scoring points against leftists than having an honest discussion. He also very much throws his weight around, intimidates people by shoving the mic in their face and leaning into them, and then plays the high ground like he's being civil when people lose their shit on him. He's also a C level comedian at best. |

11.07.18 | One of the issues I have with Jac's statement is that the idea of violence has been so trivialized. I'm in a major metro area and live near the university. I routinely hear things like "hate speech is literally violence", advocating for immigration restriction is "literally advocating genocide", etc. etc. Somehow I'm not entirely comfortable letting these types of people decide whether or not my speech crosses the line.
My family is from a legitimately wartorn part of the world, so at first I just found the lack of perspective amongst upper middle class liberals entertaining. When I consider the idea that policy might be based on these types of hysterics, I find it less funny. |

I’ve said it from the start and was called ‘old’ ‘reactionary’ and what have you but I’ve seen it happen over 20 odd years and that in itself is an extension of what was started in the 60s and 70s by my parents generation.

11.07.18 | Enough is enough UbiSoft. We’ve sat through your multicultural lectures and your preachy games aimed at degenerates and miscegenators. We’ve tolerated it in the name of gameplay design and innovation. But no more! Far Cry 5 is an insult to your fanbase, the Americans who make up the majority of your customers, and it’s time you woke up to that fact. Change this, or cancel it.
Us Gamers have had to endure a lot of crap over the last few years. The targeted harassment by the mainstream press through Gamergate, the terrible launch and outright lies of highly anticpated video games, the outright censorship of art through “localization” policies, the continued rejection of romantic partners when they find out our hobby, the appropriation of our culture by so-called “gamers” on twitter. NO MORE!
It’s time to draw a line in the sand. We, the American gamers that make up the majority of your userbase, demand to you cancel this game, or alter it to be less offensive to your main player base. In these times, you must understand that there might be some violent repurcussions if you intend to follow through with your pointless criticism. |

Yes, every minority kills their own minority the most, but considering that Gamer Americans make up 48% of the country and STILL manage to commit so much homicide IS a problem. Whether they're killing gamers, casuals, or children. There are about 2x as many chads in this country as gamers, yet, Gamers commit more murder than chads by a long shot. Gamers are killing eachother in droves and you just shrug it off because it doesn't fit your narrative. According to https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nl_Tj82asR4 , Gamers murder at an incredibly high rate for their population.

Three other big ways to reduce shootings are a reduction in psychotropic meds, a reduction in single motherhood rates (nearly every school shooter had no father), and a local petition where you could take away an insane neighbor's right to own a gun (this one would have stopped the florida shooting). |

I'm so lucky that I'm in a country that reacted to a mass shooting in a responsible way that means I don't have to worry about going to school, or a nightclub, or a place of worship or countless other places with the threat of being pumped full of bullets from a semi-automatic weapon.
Love the country and the people I've met from there, but their approaches to gun control and universal healthcare are two things I will never ever understand. |

It does threaten the 2nd amendment, but due process is also part of the constitution so it would be a pretty moderate measure. Democrats won't go for it right now because they have more to gain by obstructing and calling the GOP heartless.
You're right that there are no studies for psychs really because the sample size is so low and only correlation can be known, not causation. There is SIGNIFICANT evidence for overprescription however.
Bullying is a big part yes. Usually when kids have bullying issues its because they have no father in the household. |
guitarded_chuck
11.08.18 | bullying has increased tenfold since the new social media paradigm took hold and i think that probably has more to do with the rise in mental issues among kids (and other people, but especially kids) than anything -> major role in the rise in shootings
blaming the drugs is a cop-out as it's not the drugs causing them to act out, it's the symptoms they were experience that required them having to be put on the drugs that were an attempt to balance them
all prescription drugs are over-prescribed yes which is another issue however someone taking an SSRI when they don't have a physical need does not drive them to insanity |

11.08.18 | "You don't know anything about statistics, do you"
Stats like the US is responsible for 30+% of the worlds mass shootings, but with 5% of the population, or perhaps the stat that gun homicide rates in the US are 25 times higher than all other industrialised, modern countries, or the stat that the country I'm in hasn't seen a mass shooting in over 20 years (since guns became heavily regulated), where as the US has had on average almost one a day in 2018. And that's only a selection, I could keep going.
As for the mental health thing, so many other industrialised countries have exactly the same issues with mental health support and care, but don't have mass shootings on average one a day. The US is an outlier because of the ubiquity and ease of access to guns. |
guitarded_chuck
11.08.18 | for the record im not saying it doesnt also have to do with the availability of firearms in america however that has been a constant over time so if the discussion is about potential causes of the *increase* in shootings the cause(s) is/are some other variable(s) |

If your population is lower than the US, that alone explains your lower shooting rates. A big fact that people gloss over is that 2/3 of gun deaths are suicides, and there is no evidence to suggest that a ban would lower it. |

11.08.18 | In the US, during 60's-70's asylums were federally funded and it was easier to admit patients. The system has since switched to a state model and its far worse now. The growing single motherhood rate is probably part of the cause too (most shooters don't have a father), but there's also simply a natural percentage of the population that is born with mental illness. |
Asdfp277
11.08.18 | the band aid solutions is necessary when the damage is already done bruh, that's the thing

11.08.18 | yes dear the initial point which both of you have apparently been unable to hang onto as the conversation progressed is that the reason we have more mental health problems isnt the health care system itself but rather some variable change in society that needs to be addressed
help all the fat fucks get their insulin now but find out why there are so many fat fucks and put them on treadmills to plug the dam so as to prevent future suffering, to rely on society being able to support the infinitely increasing number of fatties is impractical economically speaking as well
hopefully that gets the point across if not my condolences |

@Meridiu5: I know you intentionally exaggerated with 60% of the world living in grass huts. I can only recommend Hans Rosling's newest book "Factfulness". The whole world is not as underdeveloped as one might think. Also Steven Pinker published a new book about the same topic this year, but Rosling's is shorter and more straight forward. Just in case you are interested :)
However, here are 3 graphics about the ownerships of guns and gun violence per 100.000 inhabitants in Switzerland and the US. I know it is in German, but I think you will get the point. Also there are many interesting facts like the percentage of homicides and suicides and stuff. For me personally it indicates that there are several problems at stake, but also that there are obviously measurements to condemn this crisis. In addition one major thing is in semi automatic guns, I think. Just fyi

imagine how profoundly ignorant u have to be to think this is some recent phenomenon involving "third worlders" when it's literally been the one enduring narrative of America since even before its formal inception
the immigration system always favored europeans because they assimilate better. this was true throughout our history. it wasn't till the 1960's when ted kennedy opened the border to the third world. and he only did it because he knew lower IQ populations statistically vote democrat |
guitarded_chuck
11.09.18 | yeah if key wants to turn the debate into claims of europeans being as equally unsuccessful coming to america the white nationalist rebuke is - true but guess who came out on top
its a fucking stupid comment and only seeks to further the heated race discussion unnecessarily, which i begin to wonder if that is not the primary motivation for making comments such as key just did, wanting to further the racial fighting under the guise of some bullshit righteous stance
you want peace and equality among the races? how about stop making unproductive fucking comments like that yeah?

11.10.18 | The difference in immigration between modern day and then was the existence of a welfare state tbh. White Euros weren't immigrating to a place that had a generous safety net, they were going to make it or break it solely on their own blood, sweat, tears, and often lives. Compare that to someplace like Germany where the vast bulk of immigrants have no job skills to speak of, no desire to learn the language, and no intention of finding gainful employment. |
Keyblade
11.10.18 | why would u compare it to Germany when we're talking about the us |

budgie
11.10.18 | "there have been relatively large governments that weren't oozing with corruption i'm sure. maybe you could argue it increases the likelihood for corruption? i guess?"
the wondrously stupid thing here is thinking the absence of government leading to an absence of corruption being positive.. it leads to an absence of culpability, corruption is a charge, after all. it's like making homicide legal and claiming progress because homicide-related incarcerations disappeared |
veninblazer
11.10.18 | I guess it is correlational, but as far as I'm concerned the easiest way to fix the issues is to take their power away, piece by piece. It's so funny seeing anti-Trump liberals go on about fascism; meanwhile, they were seemingly fine with the government getting as big as it is today (or the good ones were just not loud enough), which is what allowed such a supposed fascist to have an overwhelming amount of power. |

11.10.18 | I see where your concern lies, but that's why we can't just rip the entitlements and other massive programs out from under people. As libertarian as I am, I am still a pragmatist, we ought to go one by one, slowly transferring power back to the citizens. |

11.10.18 | I mean I'm still not advocating abolition but how were we able to handle limited government in the first half or so of America's lifespan? Child labor was already on the way out before the laws were implemented against it. And that's actually a measure I'm fine with. |
