Terrific year overall. Most of these are on the heavy side.

RFDM (Russian Fucking Death Metal)
The Missing

Not quite as interesting as Selenelion, but a solid goth-rock/metal album from maudlin of the Gorguts and co.
18Entropia (PL)

Like most people here, had no idea who these guys were, now I do, and this album is damn good.
17The Dillinger Escape Plan
One of Us Is the Killer

Another solid release from these crazy fuckers, albeit with relatively little replay value. The title track is one of the best pop doozies they've ever written.
Heart of Oak

Riffs, riffs and more fucking riffs. Almost ridiculous how many good riffs this thing has.

I would say this is arguably his best album, which is saying a lot. Each track has a way of slowly entering your head and staying there. The run time is not off-putting in the least.
The Mountain

This brand of progressive metal is really not my cup of tea, but it's hard to deny the creativity going on here. Amazing melodies, great playing and a Gentle Giant worship that I can't help but love.

I love this god-damned band. Their brand of misanthropic (haha), suffocating black sludge tickles my pickle and this album has a bit more variety than their excellent previous releases.

Sleeper album of the year. Come on people, Danny Carey's band's modern fusion is surprisingly incredible. The playing is mind-melting but most importantly, this album is listenable as shit.

Yes, it's Heartwork worship. It also undeniably rips. Everything you could hope for in a death/grind album with a melodic edge.

Definitely a tad overrated, but still undeniably amazing. I feel Dream House is an overrated track, and I'll take the title track over it any day. But the overall power of this album is undeniable.
Surgical Steel

Comeback status: great success!
Habitual Levitations

This album was released so god-damned long ago it feels like a 2012 album, but nonetheless, it's top-notch work from a band that continues to grow and hasn't released anything weak yet.
7Earl Sweatshirt

Easily hip-hop album of the year. It's obvious I wasn't a big fan of the genre this year, but Doris is grimy, dark and Earl sounds like he couldn't care less what you may think about anything related to him. Oh, and he can rap.
6Nine Inch Nails
Hesitation Marks

An incredibly solid release for Trent this late into his career. Practically no clunkers here and a few of the best tracks he's ever made
5Protest The Hero

Haters can hate, these boys can simply do no wrong. Clarity seriously may be the best track they've ever written and Plato's Tripartite is the catchiest track of the year.

Protest the Hero, the rated-R version. David Davidson does something that many heavy bands don't. He writes songs. This is easily the most mature, creative and dare I say best album these virtuosos have released yet.
3Steven Wilson
The Raven That Refused to Sing

Steven Wilson continues to amaze. 6 incredibly well written songs with phenomenal playing. The spirit of the 70's is fully alive here.
Colored Sands

This was a HUGE grower for me, but inevitably I realized the greatness of this album's dizzying prog-death. Luc Lemay should be given a Nobel Prize for coming up with this music and then proceeding to lay it to tape.
1Kayo Dot

This one is a no-brainer for me. Toby Driver outdid himself here and this is easily the best KD album since CotE. A tad on the bloated side, but the ambition is admirable, the execution is nearly flawless and the songwriting is downright unbelievable. This is simply a world to get lost in. Gold Metal for 2013, no questions asked.
