The 10 Best Songs By The Streets

Like nothing you've ever heard before, The Streets is a singular noise that could only have been produced by a dirty London flat.
10The Streets
Don't Hide Away

After A Grand Dont Come For Free, Mike Skinner got really shitty really fast, but
Cyberspace and Reds is his most accomplished release in years and its thanks to
his love of simple rapping. Don't Hide Away is a particular highlight with 4 MCs
going hard as fuck over a rattling, shrieking beat.
9When You Wasnt Famous

The best of his many "Oh may god I'm famous" tracks. He's famous for sounding
so unfamous, its confusing for him to see pop stars smoke crack.
8It Was Supposed to Be So Easy

One of Mike Skinner's best qualities is he's hilarious. He has the insightful
observations of a stand up comedian all wrapped in thick rhymes. "Get there the
cues outrageous, ladies takin' ages!/My rage is blowin' gauges!/how longs it take to
validate your wages?/At last my turn comes, press the fifty quid button/Insufficient
funds...
7Geezers Need Excitement

Skinner wraps his dense storytelling with such urgency you cant help be taken
along with it. Cinematic in the way a John Woo film would be, glances are cast,
shadows are longer, heartbeats are quicker, but nothing is really happening here.
6Dry Your Eyes

Goes for the big emotional statement and nails it. Chorus delivered by a non-Chris
Martin cypher because it needs to sound like your friend not Chris Martin. Details so
sharp and painful you'll be back in time before you know it.
5Could Well Be In

Soft and gentle. Notes on a first date so specific it shouldn't be relatable but the
thrill is easy to tap into.
4Has It Come to This?

The first of his songs to put him on the map. He's got "64s, Playstations", hey so do I.
3Turn the Page

As far as mission statement, debut album openers go, this is a doozy. Game of
Thrones epic shit here. Swords are brandish, gauntlets are thrown down, I get
goosebumps, Mike Skinner waves a buster sword and leads the charge.
2Weak Becomes Heroes

Achingly nostalgic and impossibly well told. Anyone you know who was into the
rave scene when he was younger will be instantly leveled by this. "Tune reminds
me of my first E/Plug 16 and still feeling horny..."
1Stay Positive

Some of the hardest, realest bars ever laid to tape. In any genre. Ever. Flat out.
Mike tells the story of a fuck up we all know, we all know him because we are all
terrified it could be us one day. The moral of the story is how easy it is to fall into
this, to give up, to lose your drive and stop writing, stop trying, stop fighting. Just
sink. Sink. Sink. The end part where the viewpoints are flipped and Mike inserts
himself into a story you didn't even realize became your own? Fuck. Thats on some
Memento shit right there.
