Top 10 death metal of 2018 (not ranked)
1Horrendous
Idol

Despite liking some of their material, I've always been a skeptic of Horrendous; Idol has converted me into a believer.
2Portal
ION

An early year DM AOTY contender that I feel may have been slightly forgotten in the last few months. Though they shed the murk, what was lying underneath was infinity more frightening and ION to me, is definitely their most challenging album yet, with the reward being well worth it.
3Burial Invocation
Abiogenesis

Abiogenesis has definitely gained some traction around here which I am grateful for, but it's still pretty underrated IMO. It's an excellent old-school styled album that kind of traverses the many areas of death metal's history with its swift and diverse delivery.
4Dire Omen
Formless Fire Embodied

Canadian black/death metal in the vein of Mitochondrion or Antediluvian; spiraling and dissonant chords aplenty and a drum performance that makes you question just how fast a human and move.
5Extremity
Coffin Birth

Kind of kitschy old-school sounding death metal that doesn't take itself too seriously. Brings back the focus of the genre to horror movie influenced lyrics and is a nice listen when you're weary of how overly serious death metal has become.
6Necros Christos
Domedon Doxomedon

Necros Christos play death metal like it's 1988 and somehow it still sounds fresh in 2018 ... go figure.
7Skeletal Remains
Devouring Mortality

Groovy and hard-hitting thrashy DM, that's somehow been super overlooked this year.
8Cist
The Frozen Casket

I don't think I would blame anyone who has mistaken Cist as a band lost in time; the first time I listened to this demo, I could have sworn it was released anywhere from 1988-1992. Turns out, I was only 30ish years off the mark. For anyone who loves the classic riff'n'gore of early Death and/or Pestilence, don't skip this.
9Autokrator
Hammer Of The Heretics

One of the most misunderstood death metal albums to come out in recent years.
10Convulsing
Grievous

Atmospheric death metal with blackened bursts and mind-obliterating riffage.
