Carnifex
09.30.11 | Other than 4 I consider these all vastly influential. |
jefflebowski
09.30.11 | Never got all the acclaim for 4 really. Bought it, listened to it a lot, found the production, amazing as it is, a tad dated |
Trebor.
09.30.11 | I wouldn't consider 3 and 8 essential for the general public because they come from pretty niche genres
Essential for Sputnik sure |
Carnifex
09.30.11 | They're influential in their respective genres and/or scenes. |
Satellite
09.30.11 | is 4 the soundtrack to the patrick swayze vehicle of the same name? |
Trebor.
09.30.11 | I was not impressed by Ghost |
AliW1993
09.30.11 | Too many to list, but off the top of my head I'd say
The Beatles - Sgt Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band
Led Zeppelin - Led Zeppelin
Nirvana - Nevermind
Sex Pistols - Never Mind The Bollocks
The Smiths - The Queen Is Dead
The Velvet Underground - The Velvet Underground & Nico
David Bowie - Low
Pixies - Doolittle |
Trebor.
09.30.11 | If you're gonna put sex pistols then you have to put The Clash or London Calling |
WashboardSuds
09.30.11 | list is legit |
jefflebowski
09.30.11 | The Clash's debut is miles better than anything the Pistols ever did |
clercqie
09.30.11 | 1. Robert Johnson - King Of The Delta Blues Singers
2. Chuck Berry - Is On Top
3. The Beatles - Sgt Peppers
4. Jimi Hendrickx - Are You Experienced
5. David Bowie - Ziggy Stardust
6. Sex Pistols - Never Mind The Bollocks
7. Joy Division - Unknown Pleasures
8. Nirvana - Nevermind
If we're talking influential albums only... |
clercqie
09.30.11 | "The Clash's debut is miles better than anything the Pistols ever did"
I agree wholeheartily, but they weren't as influential... |
ffs
09.30.11 | it is essential to understand the unessential-ness of all things |
jefflebowski
09.30.11 | maybe not. I think the pistols were more influential in terms of attitude rather than music |
Trebor.
09.30.11 | Attitude doesn't mean shit
Doolittle is more influential then Nevermind |
clercqie
09.30.11 | Yeah, but that's kind of the point...
I mean if we're talking about musical influences of punk you have to list The Sonic, The Stooges, The Who and The Kinks |
jefflebowski
09.30.11 | And the MC5, if you wanna include american punk.
'Doolittle is more influential than Nevermind'
True! |
clercqie
09.30.11 | And while I'm at it: Surfer Rosa was more influential than Doolittle... |
omnipanzer
09.30.11 | Pistols Vs. Clash.
I'd argue one was more influential culturally but the other was more influential musically. |
jefflebowski
09.30.11 | Yeah, I'd agree. The Clash are just a better band though |
Trebor.
09.30.11 | Not really |
Carnifex
09.30.11 | I personally enjoy both bands pretty equally tbh. |
Scoot
09.30.11 | 4 is awesome but shouldn't be on this list
give it ten years or so |
clercqie
09.30.11 | I never really thought of The Clash as that influential. I always compare Pistols and Clash to The Stones and The Beatles:
One started a revolution (be it musically or qua attitude) and the other didn't do anything new but instead based their music on the stuff they liked and that came before them. |
omnipanzer
09.30.11 | Pistols Vs. Ramones
I've always been on the Ramones side of the fence so when going Pistols Vs. Clash musically I'll always side with the clash. Now Ramones Vs. Clash I would have to side with the Ramones on Principle. I certainly listen to them more often. |
Trebor.
09.30.11 | Ramones came out a year and a half before Never Mind The Bollocks
Plus when I think of punk, I think of America |
omnipanzer
09.30.11 | In simple order of how often I actually listen to their music its:
Ramones > Clash > Pistols |
Trebor.
09.30.11 | I rarely listen to all three anymore |
jefflebowski
09.30.11 | Yeah, but influence aside, the Pistols just didn't have that many good songs (apart from Pretty Vacant and God Save the Queen). Taken out of context, NMTB is just a decent punk album, whereas the clash's songs stand the test of time.
The Pistols/Beatles comparison is a bit tenuous... |
omnipanzer
09.30.11 | Hate to agree with an alt but I agree with this alt. |
Trebor.
09.30.11 | London Calling transcended the genre as well
You don't have to be a punk to own that album |
clercqie
09.30.11 | "The Pistols/Beatles comparison is a bit tenuous..."
Yeah, I know. But it conveys my point well enough, I think.
And in the end: Clash >>> all |
jefflebowski
09.30.11 | who's an alt now?
Clash>>>all - agreed! |
UrAssIsMyHat
09.30.11 | I don't see any alts |
Blackbelt54
09.30.11 | I've only heard 4 of these
The Clash- London Calling
Miles Davis- Kind of Blue
Streetlight Manifesto- Everything Goes Numb
At the Drive-In- Relationship of Command
Bruce Springsteen- Born to Run
Operation Ivy- Energy
Bob Dylan- Blood on the Tracks
GZA- Liquid Swords
would be mine |
Carnifex
09.30.11 | list lacks rockin jams |
omnipanzer
09.30.11 | "Clash>>>all - agreed!"
Not for me but I have enough respect to not really argue it. |
Yotimi
09.30.11 | Beatles - Sgt Peppers
King Crimson - In the Court of the Crimson King
Black Sabbath - Paranoid
David Bowie - Ziggy Stardust
Kraftwerk - Trans Europa Express
Beastie Boys - Paul's Boutique
Radiohead - OK Computer
Burial - Untrue
|
Trebor.
09.30.11 | Paul's Boutique for sure |
Scoot
09.30.11 | ^ this |
jefflebowski
09.30.11 | Paul's Boutique is sample-tastic |
Samshine
09.30.11 | Couldn't agree with you more for three |
TheNotrap
09.30.11 | Pink Floyd - The Dark Side of the Moon
Pink Floyd - The Wall
Marillion - Misplaced Childhood
Iron Maiden - Powerslave
Iron Maiden Live After Death
And the others |
TRMshadow
09.30.11 | Agree with a lot of this, but not the HevyDevy seeing as it just came out this year; give it a couple years before calling it "Influential"
I'd add:
Pink Floyd - The Wall
Operation Ivy - Energy
Carcass - Heartwork
And something from Rush |
jefflebowski
09.30.11 | Fugazi's 13 songs should be here too - Most of their discography is heavily influential to the post-
hardcore movement. Not to mention Piccioto's work with ROS |
