| A Sputnik Guide To Trout Mask Replica | 1 | Captain Beefheart Trout Mask Replica
This has recently become my favorite album, and not enough people appreciate it like it should be on this site. When you first listen, it sounds disjointed and cacophonous, so this is a guide to what songs I think people should get into first, then where to go from there. | 2 | First impressions After getting it off mediafire
You may have researched this album before, read all of the hyperbolic reviews, and decided, like me, that "because critics are usually right, and my own opinion towards music takes a back seat to their views" and downloaded it. When it comes up in your itunes, winamp, whatever, start with these songs and see what you think. | 3 | Captain Beefheart & his magic band Moonlight on Vermont | 4 | Veterans Day Poppy | 5 | Hair Pie: Bake 2 | 6 | China Pig | 7 | Did that sound horrible? I hope not
Hopefully this entree hasn't deterred you from this album and its general feel. I'll tell you what. Listen to those songs again. 5 times. With headphones. Listen out for the interesting basslines, and learn to appreciate Beefheart's idiosyncratic tone. After that, move onto: | 8 | Captain Beefheart & his magic band Ella Guru | 9 | Ant man Bee | 10 | Sugar n' Spikes | 11 | Frownland | 12 | Sweet Sweet Bulbs | 13 | If the interest is still there... (and if not)
If it is still present and you are intrigued by it (which I hope you are), then move onto the rest of the album and listen to it whenever possible. If you didn't like it, then put it down, take a deep breath and come back in 2 weeks to listen to it. The moment will happen, eventually. I will now rank the rest of the album on how good the songs are that I have not mentioned. I will start with a classic, Dachau Blues: | 14 | Captain Beefheart & his magic band Dachau Blues
Avoid first up. Acquired Taste | 15 | Pachuco Cadaver | 16 | | 17 | Hobo Chang Ba | 18 | Hair Pie: Bake 1 | 19 | Neon Meate Dream of a Octafish
Avoid first up. See Dachau Blues | 20 | When Big Joan Sets up | 21 | Dali's Car | 22 | Wild Life | 23 | The Blimp | 24 | She's too much for my mirror | 25 | Fallin Ditch | 26 | Bills Corpse | 27 | My Human Gives Me Blues | 28 | Pena
AVOID first up. Too atonal | 29 | Steal Softly Thru Snow | 30 | Old Fart at Play | 31 | Note:
I didn't Include the spoken word passages as I don't consider them to be essential parts of the album (contentious) | 32 | Thats right The Mascara Snake Fast n' Bulbous | 33 | Also, A tin teardrop | |

09.15.10 | what is this
good album | ubermensch518
09.15.10 | definitely a great guide to listening to the album.... I just started (I'm on your 9)... not sure what I think, I seem to just be sitting here waiting for the songs to end, and the recording is a bit bootleg for my tastes... Hair Pie: Bake 2 had some very good riffs, but as a fan of prog, the transitions were rough, awkward, and basic... definitely an album to crank the bass on, or else it's just annoying.....maybe if I was into bayou blues more.... | couldwinarabbit
09.15.10 | such an amazingly awesome album. I agree it takes a while to get but when you finally get it it is so so so so good | Jruined
09.16.10 | Great break down here. I love Beefheart. Spot Light Kid is probably an even better place to start for most people. I loved this from the beginning but then again I was raised on Zappa and a lot of the R.I.O music (Henry Cow and such).
All I can say is...
"A squid in a polyethylene bag is fast n'bulbous. Got me?" | Dryden
