We all have them, even if it's from a goddamn blink 182 song.

"Study me as much as you like, you will never know me, for I differ a
hundred ways from what you see me to be. Put yourself behind my eyes,
and see me as I see myself, for I have chosen to dwell in a place you
cannot see."
-Rumi

"I think it's very healthy to spend time alone. You need to know how to be
alone and not be defined by another person"
-Oscar Wilde

"Formal schooling has no intrinsic value, but becomes necessary when
humanity creates a condition in which one must become educated just to
get along"
-Masanobu Fukuoka

"The quieter you become, the more you can hear"
-Ram Dass
5Radiohead
The Bends

"I think the most unhealthy thing for a human being is to feel that they
have to behave in a certain way because other people expect them to
behave like that, or to feel they have to think in a certain way because
what happens then is basically your mind goes round in circles"
-Thom Yorke
6Orphaned Land
Mabool (The Story of the Three Sons...)

"If you are around people or energies you aren't comfortable with, see
them as opportunities for spiritual growth by teaching you more about
becoming transparent. The thoughts and feelings of people you have the
most trouble harmonizing with are the very ones that will give you the most
growth when you do learn to be transparent with them. That is why you
have attracted these people into your life"
-Orin
7Gru
Cosmogenesis

"When we are young we spend much time and pains in filling our
notebooks with all definitions of Religion, Love, Poetry, Politics, Art, in the
hope that in the course of a few years we shall have condensed into our
encyclopedia the net value of all the theories at which the world has yet
arrived. But year after year our tables get no completeness and at last we
discover that our curve is a parabola, whose arcs will never meet."
-Ralph Waldo Emerson
8Bob Marley and The Wailers
Legend

"Our society values alert, problem-solving consciousness and it devalues all
other states of consciousness. Any kind of consciousness that is not related
to the production or consumption of material goods is stigmatized in our
society today."
-Graham Hancock
9Tool
Undertow

"Throughout human history, as our species has faced the frightening,
terrorising fact that we do not know who we are, or where we are going in
this ocean of chaos, it has been the authorities, the political, the religious,
the educational authorities who attempted to comfort us by giving us order,
rules, regulations, informing, forming in our minds their view of reality. To
think for yourself you must question authority and learn how to put yourself
in a state of vulnerable, open-mindedness; chaotic, confused, vulnerability
to inform yourself. Think for yourself, Question authority."
-Timothy Leary

"People are disturbed not by things, but the views they take on them"

"Unfortunately, the clock is ticking, the hours are going by. The past
increases, the future recedes. Possibilities decreasing, regrets mounting."
-Haruki Murakami
13maudlin of the Well

"Nature does not hurry, yet everything is accomplished."
-Lao Tzu
14Tool
Lateralus

"Inability to accept the mystic experience is more than an intellectual
handicap. Lack of awareness of the basic unity of organism and
environment is a serious and dangerous hallucination. For in a civilization
equipped with immense technological power, the sense of alienation
between man and nature leads to the use of technology in a hostile spirit-
to the "conquest" of nature instead of intelligent co-operation with nature
15The Avalanches
Since I Left You

"All claims of education notwithstanding, the pupil will only accept that
which his mind craves"
-Emma Goldman
16Sufjan Stevens
The Age of Adz

"You have to leave the city of your comfort and go into the wilderness of
your intuition. What you'll discover will be wonderful. What you'll discover is
yourself."
-Unknown
17Amon Tobin
Permutation

"When the human soul feels alienated from (the) Source, it seeks a
situation that offers a sense of belonging, as in a tribe. The tribe, however,
stunts growth because it requires conformity. Solitude is the price of
greatness."
-Almine
18Acid Mothers Temple
Pink Lady Lemonade

"In any given moment a man's growth is optimized if he leans just beyond
his edge, his capacity, his fear. He should not be too lazy, happily
stagnating in the zone of security and comfort. Nor should he push far
beyond his edge, stressing himself unnecessarily, unable to metabolize his
experience. He should lean just slightly beyond the edge of fear and
discomfort. Constantly... In everything he does"
-David Deida
19Mudvayne
L.D. 50

"To live in the present moment is a miracle. The miracle is not to walk on
water. The miracle is to walk on the green Earth in the present moment, to
appreciate the peace and beauty that are available now."
-Thich Nhat Hanh
20Rage Against The Machine

"Believe nothing, no matter where you read it or who has said it, not even
if I have said it, unless it agress with your own reason and your own
common sense."
-Buddha

"The only goal worth attaining is complete freedom to be yourself, without
illusions and false beliefs."
-Deepak Chopra
22DJ Shadow
The Private Press

"The most fundamental aggression to ourselves, the most fundamental
harm we can do to ourselves, is to remain ignorant by not having the
courage and the respect to look at ourselves honestly and gently."
-Pema Chodron
Oh and Blood on the Motorway is one of the most meaningful songs you'll
ever grace your ears on.
23dredg
El Cielo

"Who understands does not preach; Who preaches does not understand.
Reserves your judgments and words; Smooth difference and forgive
disagreements; Dull your win and simplify your purpose; Accept the world.
Then, Friendship and enmity, Profit and loss, Honour and disgrace, Will not
affect you; The world will accept you"
-Lao Tzu
24Jethro Tull
Aqualung

"It's always difficult. To feel, rather than to think, to tap into that source
and let it come through you. It takes courage. Because we feel it and then
we get scared and we analyze it. We live in this thought web, we identify
things and put them away and distance ourselves from them. But to be
completely present? That is source, that is art, that is spirituality. And
meditation is a way to defy fear and experience from that source.
25The Doors
The Doors

"Don't believe what your eyes are telling you. All they show is limitation.
Look with your understand, find out what you already know and you'll see
the way to fly."
26The Dear Hunter
The Color Spectrum

"The ancient intuition that all matter, all 'reality' is energy, that all
phenomena, including time and space, are mere crystallizations of the mind,
is an idea with which few physicists have quarreled since the theory of
relativity first called into question the separate identities of energy and
matter. Today most scientists would agree with the ancient Hindus that
nothing exists or is destroyed, things merely change shape or form; that
matter is insubstantial in origin, a temporary aggregate of the pervasive
energy that animates to electron."
-Peter Matthiessen
27Tool
Aenima

"You can hold yourself back from the sufferings of the world, that is
something you are free to do and it accords with your nature, but perhaps
this very holding back is the one suffering you could avoid."
-Franz Kafka
28Pink Floyd
Meddle

"If you remain in the present moment, you will never get hurt. Forget about
your past life. Forget about your future life. Unless you open your heart,
unless you jump into the inner abyss, you are not going to become
enlihtened. Ultimately, you have to knock on your own door; you have to
beg at your own door; you have to come back to yourself."
-Hindu Teaching
29Radiohead
OK Computer

"Taking one's chances is like taking a bath, because sometimes you end up
feeling comfortable and warm, and sometimes there is something terrible
lurking around that you cannot see until it is too late and you can do
nothing else scream and cling to a plastic duck."
-Lemony Snicket
30Eleventh He Reaches London
Hollow Be My Name

"Every kid starts out as a natural-born scientist and then we beat it out of
them. A few trickle through the system with their wonder and enthusiasm
for science intact."
-Carl Sagan
31Pink Floyd
The Dark Side of The Moon

"All that you touch and all that you see, is all your life will ever be"
-Pink Floyd
32Dream Theater
Metropolis Part 2: Scenes From A Memory

"The key to growth is the introduction of higher dimensions of
consciousness into our awareness."
-Unknown. I used to lightly pass this album off for being pretentious, but it's actually
amazing.
33Joy Division
Closer

"Learn to look at your body as a river in which every cell is a drop of water.
In every moment, cells are born and cells die. Birth and death support each
other. To practise mindfulness of the body, follow your breathing and focus
your attention on each part of the body, from the hair on your head to the
soles of your feet. Breathe mindfully and embrace each part of the body
with the energy of mindfulness, smiling to it with recognition and love"
-Thich Nhat Hanh
34 Kashiwa Daisuke
Program Music

"The cost of sanity, in this society, is a certain level of alienation."
-Terence Mckenna
35Love
Forever Changes

"The most regretful people on earth are those who felt the call to creative
work, who felt their own creative power restive and uprising, and gave to it
neither power nor time."
-Mary Oliver
36Meshuggah
Alive

"Too many young folk have addiction into superficial things and not enough
conviction for substantial things like justice, truth and love."
-Cornel West. Oh, jesus, I can't wait to see these guys live. Meshugshugshugshugah for
life.
37mewithoutYou
Brother, Sister

"Meditation is the dissolution of thoughts in eternal awareness or pure
consciousness without objectification, knowing without thinking, merging
finitude into infinity.'
-Voltaire
38Nas
Illmatic

"We seem to live in a prison of negative expectations that everyone is more
than happy to leave. Everyone is just waiting for the other person to take
the first step.
-Nick Sand. I was actually so fascinated by this quote that I looked up this "Nick Sand"
dude and apparently he made an odd 3.6 million tablets of LSD back in the
60's. I guess that was his way of trying to get people out of "the prison of
negative expectations".
39Nine Inch Nails
The Fragile

"But with action came anxiety."
-Anais Nin
40Oneohtrix Point Never
Replica

"Only those who risk going too far can find out how far one can go..."
-Unknown
41Porcupine Tree
Fear of a Blank Planet

"Let us not be confused
With kaleidoscopic reality
Using Wisdom and courage to act,
Let us not add to the confusion"
-Lao Tzu
42Rosetta
The Galilean Satellites

"Life was immeasurably better once I forced myself to stop taking it
seriously"
-Hunter S. Thompson
Oh and this album on good headphones, on a sleepless night, with the lights out, completely disconnected
from reality, a slight breeze coming through the window, is one of the most amazing experiences you can
have with music. Michael Armine is one of, if not, the best songwriter of this decade.
43Rush
Hemispheres

"People are anxious to change their circumstance yet are unwilling to
change themselves. Therefore they remain bound."
-Unknown (i just realized the unknown quotes are often the most profound.)
44Shpongle
Tales of The Inexpressible

"Act without expectation"
-Lao Tzu
45Bob Dylan
Blood on the Tracks

"True intelligence operates silently. Stillness is where creativity and
solutions to problems are found"
-Eckhart Tolle
46Philip Glass
Koyaanisqatsi

"When you're really working, really playing tennis, lifting weights, playing
basketball, or whatever it is it happens in sports, it happens in music, it
happens in everything when you're fully consumed with the act, the
witness just disappears. And for that reason, when someone asks, "What
was it like?" you can't remember, because the person inside of you who
does the remembering was otherwise occupied."
-Phillip Glass
47Elliott Smith
XO

"The mechanical mind has a passion for control - of everything except itself"
-L.P. Jacks
48The Beatles
Magical Mystery Tour

You need to learn how to select your thoughts just the same way you
select your clothes every day. This is a power you can cultivate. If you want
to control things in your life so bad, work on the mind. That's the only thing
you should be trying to control.
-Elizabeth Gilbert
49Kayo Dot
Choirs of the Eye

You cannot squeeze life; you have to surrender to it. You cannot conquer
life. You have to be courageous enough to be defeated by life. The very
effort to achieve happiness is absurd because happiness is here: you can't
achieve it. Nothing has to be done about it, you have simply to allow it.
-Osho
50Esoteric
The Pernicious Enigma

"Each second we live is a new and unique moment of the universe, a
moment that will never be again. And what do we teach our children? We
teach them that two and two make four, and that Paris is the capital of
France. When will we also teach them what they are? We should say to
each of them: Do you know what you are? You are a marvel. You are
unique. In all the years that have passed, there has never been another
child like you. Your legs, your arms, your clever fingers, the way you move.
You may become a Shakespeare, a Michelangelo, a Beethoven. You have
the capacity for anything. Yes, you are a marvel. And when you grow up,
can you then harm another who is, like you, a marvel. You must work, we
must all work, to make the world worthy of its children."
-Pablo Picasso.
This Pernicious Enigma is phenomenal. It's one of those albums that you
only should listen to if you're ready to immerse yourself in a wall of sound
for two hours that will literally transport you into another dimension. It's
like a aural representation of a supernova in your eardrums or the
thousands of molten lava crackling and melting away whole beaches of rice
bubbles.
