02.21.11 | i pretty much agree with you. I think Lebron has made a case to be MVP as well, but as of now I think it goes to Rose. I'm torn with the Most Improved Player though, I can't decide between Love, Aldridge and Westbrook |

02.21.11 | the only reason that I'd say Kevin Love shouldn't get most improved, is because I'm not sure really how much he got better this year compared with the fact that stupid fucking Rambis finally decided to start playing him minutes. most people who follow bball closely have known for over 2 years that K-Love's advanced stats and per36 numbers were better than any big man from his draft class. |
AggravatedYeti
02.21.11 | pretty much agree with this as well. I'd switch your defensive players personally--but this is probably because I spend more time watching Celtics games as compared to the Magic. Kevin Love has been beastly. |

02.21.11 | the only reason I wouldn't give it to KG, Yeti, is because I'm not sure that defense would crumble if he left. That system is incredible -- the Bulls are the #1 defensive team in the league by basically any metric, without a single player on the roster having made an all-defense team before.
Take Howard off the Magic, their defense immediately looks like one of the worst in the league. But KG is an all-world defender, no doubt. |

02.21.11 | lol but it wasn't your defense that lost you that series Yeti, plus it went 7 games. I'd argue Garnett's just as important to their offense because of the floor spacing he provides from the PF position. Also, the drop-off from him to Big Baby is a lot smaller this year than it was 2 years ago.
I've always found Rondo to be pretty overrated defensively acad, but watching him this year I've gained a bit more respect for his man defense. |
AggravatedYeti
02.21.11 | hahaha. Hey if KG were there the Magic would have had much more trouble knocking us out.
but yes, I'm admittedly biased about it and am 100% ok with that.
Rondo, while a damn good PG (and my favorite next to Rose lolz) is still developing. He's stepped up his D incredibly this year as well as his fg/ft shooting. The man is on his way. |

02.21.11 | also the passing.

Inveigh
02.21.11 | I'm probably a little blinded by my pure and utter hatred of Rondo (stemming from the 2009 first round series), but I can't help but think he's overrated. I know people love him, but the guy pads those assists like no other (to the point where he will literally give up a wide open layup on a fast break and wait for someone else to get there so he can get another assist).
I'd still put him in the top 5 PGs if I was starting a team, but I can't help but put him behind Rose, D-Will and CP3 at this point.
I mean, I know I'm a homer, but my god what's Rose going to be like when he's Rondo's age... |

02.21.11 | I'm just saying that when Rondo was Rose's age he was averaging 10 points and 8 assists per game; it's easy to to bump your assists when you play with three of the best jump shooters ever for their positions. Also, you shouldn't be an All-Star PG when you have a worse FT% than Shaq.
Padding assists isn't stupid, forced criticism; it has nothing to do with fantasy. I'd argue Rondo's a better fantasy player than a real player. I'm saying it's a dumb basketball play to pass up a guaranteed basket and wait around for another player to get to the hoop so you can get an assist. It gives the defense time to catch up and could possibly cost your team a bucket.
I'm not convinced Chris Paul's ever going to be the same again after that knee injury; Derrick Rose made him look silly multiple times the last time they played. Two nights after he took D-Will to school... then he made Tony Parker wish he was back home with Eva after that...
I wouldn't trade Rose straight-up for any player in the NBA right now. That's a little bit of bias, but you'll be hard-pressed to find any basketball analyst that's not putting him in the top 3-4 players, not PGs, PLAYERS in the league right now. |
PaperTigers
02.21.11 | Rose has improved his scoring almost to Lebron's level, but he's not as efficient, and Lebron is far better on the defensive end than Rose.
The argument that Rose should win MVP because the Bulls need him more than the Heat need Lebron is dumb. Giving a homeless guy $10,000 would do more to improve his life than giving a million to a billionaire, but that doesn't make $10,000 more valuable than $1 million. The bulls don't have Wade, so they are a needier team, but Lebron is still a better player. |

Inveigh
02.21.11 | so we're going to give LeBron three straight MVPs (something that Magic, Kobe, Duncan or Jordan never accomplished in their careers) before he's won a single game in the NBA Finals?
If the award is supposed to go to best player in the regular season then they should change the name of the award to Most Outstanding Player or something.
Also can we stop with the entire "efficiency is everything" stuff? I read that all over ESPN constantly because John Hollinger gets fellated by their entire staff. When USG% goes up, efficiency goes down, that's basic math. When you play with 2 of the best players at their positions in the NBA, you're USG% (or, the amount of possessions that end with you as the last player with the ball) will go down. So, of course LeBron's going to have better efficiency numbers than Derrick.
Also, the Bulls have not played a single game at full strength this season. Noah tore the ligament in his thumb two weeks before Boozer returned, he just played through it. |

But regardless, i agree with you about paul...
about Rondo, he's obviously not going to put up the scoring numbers in his first few seasons because he was drafted onto the big three's team...
As for passing too much, i still don't see that as a negative lol...

02.21.11 | Lebron had better efficiency numbers last year playing with scrubs in Cleveland too - it has nothing to do with his teammates. USG% definitely affects efficiency, but Lebron's is just as high as Rose. I agree that Hollinger is a douche, and his interpretation of his numbers is often questionable, but efficiency is still important.
3-straight MVP's, and the finals should be irrelevant. It's a single regular season award, and Lebron is playing the best basketball this year. He won't win it because he's unpopular and because of "voter fatigue", which just means that journalists won't vote for him because it's boring to write the same column every year. They'll write about and vote for the shiny new guy instead of the best player. |

02.21.11 | I'm just wondering, by what metric are you judging Rondo as better than Rose or Deron Williams? You don't think that if Rose had Ray Allen and Paul Pierce instead of Keith Bogans and Luol Deng that he'd average 12 assists per game?
Regardless, Rose is averaging more apg in his 3rd year (this year) than Rondo did in his (2 years ago). His PER is higher, all of his shooting percentages are higher, his defense is vastly underrated this year (he leads all guards in blocked shots) and he is clearly the best player on his team, whereas Rondo is not.
Rondo is ineffective in the last 3 minutes of a game because you don't even have to guard him really, he can't shoot and won't drive because he's afraid to get fouled -- so you basically have a free defender to put on one of their Big 3.
Also, he was drafted and played his rookie year before the big 3 got there... people forget Rondo's been in the league since 2006... |

Again, if it's not about value to your team, then they should change the name of the award. Until then, you have to go off what the award is titled. It's never been voted on as a "best player" award, so why should we start now?
Otherwise Steve Nash wouldn't have any, let alone two of them. |
PaperTigers
02.21.11 | Rondo is hands down the best defender in the league at his position, but his lack of an outside shot would really be a liability if he wasn't surrounded by Ray, Pierce, and Garnett. Rondo's unique skills might make him the best PG for the Celtics, but on any other team, D-will, CP3, or Rose would be better. |

02.21.11 | I interpret most valuable to mean most valuable. Not subjectively the most valuable to a particular team. But you're probably right. They made the award ambiguous on purpose to give journalists the right to vote for crazy choices to draw attention to themselves. Not that Rose would be a crazy choice - he'd be 3rd on my ballot behind Lebron and Dwight Howard. |
theacademy
02.21.11 | steals is one thing, but there's another PG attribute where Rondo owns the other two, which is like... idk if this is the right word, but penetrability?
I mean, i watch rondo way more than rose, and rose is a much better shooter (altho to his credit, he is improving), but when rondo needs to be a fucking blur, he fucking blurrrrrs...
this is tough to find in a stat because, yeah, he pads his (easier) assists, but in terms of great PG characteristics, there are those who run plays and those who orchestrate plays... rondo is just more creative in that way |
Inveigh
02.21.11 | I do think that Rondo is the perfect player for that team, but he's not built to succeed anywhere. I feel like Rose has been an unbelievable player at every level (two straight state championships in high school coming out of the legendary Chicago public leagues, arguably the best player on a NCAA finalist team his freshman year at Memphis, in the playoffs every year as a pro, even with Vinny Del Fucking Idiot as a coach)
where as Rondo was rather unremarkable until the Big 3 got there. He is amazing to watch, but he's not the type of guy you build a team around. |
theacademy
02.21.11 | and again, don't turn this into an analogy to this lebron discussion

02.21.11 | Rose still doesn't have the level of consistency I'd like to see from a league-dominating all-star. But he's getting there. And the Westbrook/Durant combo give him and Deng or Boozer or even a healthy Noah a run for their money.
Also, WOOOOOOOO CELTICS |
Inveigh
02.21.11 | I mean either way he's a top 3-4 PG in the league; I just wouldn't take him to start a team. If Rondo was on the Bulls instead of Rose I don't know that we'd be a playoff team.
But I think if you put Rose on the Celtics you're looking at a guy who averages 18-20 ppg with 12-15 apg. Obviously that's the most subjective argument ever though lol |

02.21.11 | "where as Rondo was rather unremarkable until the Big 3 got there."

02.21.11 | " If Rondo was on the Bulls instead of Rose I don't know that we'd be a playoff team. "
this isn't really useful, either... it's really: if Rondo + a different 1st overall pick vs. Rose + a different 21st overall pick... |

02.21.11 | 1st overall picks don't normally end up on teams where they win a championship their sophomore year |

02.21.11 | I'm sorry Winsomniac, but you must not have watched many Bulls games this year...
it's probably that I'm just an NBA junkie -- I've seen every Bulls game from this season at least once (i re-watch the good ones lol) and I probably watch 3-4 other games every week.
It's a sad addiction...
Also, can I bring up the fact that I've never seen so many columnists and bloggers come out of the woodwork to denigrate a "player on the rise" as much as I have for Rose this year? Whether it's John Hollinger or Henry Abbott saying he doesn't pass enough, or Dave Berri saying Landry Fields is better because he has a higher TS% -- it seems like everyone outside of Chicago people (like Mike Wilbon or KC Johnson or Bucher) is just chomping at the bit to tear him down.
I don't remember that happening with Howard, LBJ, Wade, CP3, Deron Williams or anyone else. Only comparison I can think of is when Hollinger said Durant was overrated because he had a bad APM two years ago... any theories on why? |
PaperTigers
02.21.11 | If you're grading them based on their draft positions, then sure, Rondo was a better bargain. But he's not nearly as good as Rose. Plus he might be the biggest punkass on his team. Playing on a team with Garnett, that's pretty impressive. |
Winsomniac
02.21.11 | I'm just going to put this out there....
Most Point Guards can only do so well without a supporting cast, because they're, you know... Point Guards. Rondo is a perfect fit for the way the Celtics play, but nowhere near as big of a threat on his own as Rose. Rondo, however, facilitates plays better than most everyone in the league, and it's not just because his teammates are badasses(which they definitely are). He's got great court-awareness and really makes some clutch plays, whereas Rose's style of play revolves around having the ball and advancing it himself instead of making great passes. |

02.21.11 | I think it's just how fast Rose has risen. All the people that were criticizing him last year for having a bad year are reluctant to admit that they were wrong about him. It usually takes people at least a season to admit when a player has taken a leap this big. |
Inveigh
02.21.11 | going back to my previous post about Rose-hate, I think it has to do with him not being the traditional point guard that everyone seems to want to see (i.e. Rondo, Stockton, Magic -- guys that don't average 20 ppg and play with other great players).
Rose is more like a mini-LeBron or Wade in the way that he plays; but he is a better passer than either of those guys (ok, maybe not LeBron, who is an absolutely incredible passer, but Derrick's close). |
Inveigh
02.21.11 | but Rose averaged 20 ppg and 6.5 apg last year with a PER nearing 20... that's not bad at all. (esp considering he turned 21 just before the season started) |
Winsomniac
02.21.11 | Inveigh, I think the Celtics would destroy the Bulls in that case more so because the Bulls would lose Rose rather than the Celts gaining Rose, if that makes any sense. Rondo himself just doesn't have the level of offensive firepower that Rose brings to the table. Celtics without Rondo > Bulls without Rose. |

02.21.11 | It's definitely not bad, but it wasn't MVP caliber either. I've been more impressed with Rose's improvement this year than probably anybody else. Winsomniac
02.21.11 | 'I'd have no problem giving Rose the MIP.'

PaperTigers
02.21.11 | That's what I meant - nobody thought Rose was an MVP-caliber player last year, but now he is. He got a lot of the same type of criticisms as Melo gets - good scorer, not much else. People that criticized his D last year are going to be slow to admit that he's actually playing pretty good D this year. |
Inveigh
02.21.11 | I don't really value rebounds all that much from the PG position, I'd rather Rose be getting out on the break.
But yeah Rose's rebounding numbers aren't far behind Rondo's regardless. He's an underrated rebounder (grabs about 5 a game this year).
I also find steals to be an overrated metric to some degree -- for ever steal guys like CP3 and Wade get by gambling the passing lanes, they give up 2-3 layups. Is that efficient (to use everyone's favorite buzz word)?
Just like how LeBron makes one chase-down block per game and suddently he's a "great defender." Watch his defense in the half court, he's average at best (this is mainly an effort issue in my opinion, he obviously has the tools to be a Jordan or Kobe-like defender, he's just not there now).
Same with Rondo, watch how he gets his steals. He lets his man drive by him (knowing that he's got KG, Shaq and usually Perkins back there) and uses those freakishly long arms to reach around and poke the ball out. For most players that's a foul, but for some reason he never gets called for it. I think that's smart basketball actually, it just bothers me because I hate Rondo. But up until this year, all he had to do was do that twice a game and everyone busts their nut.
This year I've watched Rondo actually become a lock-down defender (he's even taken LBJ at times), so no argument from me that he's probably the best defensive PG in the league. |
Inveigh
02.21.11 | oh ok now I get what you're saying Tigers, makes sense. |
PaperTigers
02.21.11 | Wow, I disagree with the Lebron playing average defense part. He isn't the best man-to-man defender in the league (though far above average), but he plays exceptional help defense. Teams game plan around avoiding Lebron in the half-court. |
Inveigh
02.21.11 | I definitely don't see that. I have a hard time believing that you can play good half-court defense averaging 1.2 fouls per 40 minutes, and not fouling out of a game in 7 years.
out of the 15 all-nba defenders, LeBron averages more than 2 less fouls per 40 than any of them. he's not bad, and his help defense is better this year than any other year that I've seen (he just looks overall more motivated this year to me, probably because of the massive backlash), but I feel like everyone was too quick to bestow that title on him a couple of years ago.
His man defense is still below average for the most part, which to me is hugely important, considering he guards the most talented position in the league.
regardless, he's still the best player in the NBA; I just don't see the intangibles (i.e. consistently not taking the last shot, not wanting to shoot late free throws, etc.) |
theacademy
02.21.11 | "I don't really value rebounds all that much from the PG position, I'd rather Rose be getting out on the break.
But yeah Rose's rebounding numbers aren't far behind Rondo's regardless. He's an underrated rebounder (grabs about 5 a game this year)."
uhh yea you'd want ROSE there, but you wouldn't necessarily want Rondo there... all i'm saying is that the defensive stat differences address the scoring differences b/w the two pg's
also rose 4.4 rebs per game (rondo 5.2 in his 3rd season... when he averaged almost 2 steals per game) |

i think that's a common ground |
PaperTigers
02.21.11 | Lebron's defense sometimes looks bad because his footwork and fundamentals aren't great. He makes mistakes and lets guys get a step on him, and then he relies on his athleticism to make up for it. It's not what we think a great defender should look like, but he's remarkably effective. Both the Cavs and Heat teams have been way worse defensive teams with him on the bench (and the Cavs actually had some decent wing defenders to replace him). I don't think you'll find a player in the league that would say he's easy to score on. |
theacademy
02.21.11 | i can do you one better...
i'd give rose the mvp this year (assuming repeat 2nd half) |
Inveigh
02.21.11 | nah, LeBron's not easy to score on, especially not when he's zoned in. my issue with him is that he's not always completely focuses on that end. at the end of games and when he's facing someone like Kobe, he's one of the best in the league.

when Yi played on the Bucks, Luke Ridnour was a top 2 or 3 vote-getter for guards. ridiculous. |

02.21.11 | Very good point that I completely forgot about. |

02.21.11 | Either way I think they should keep the voting to strictly the coaches, leaving it in the hands of the fans just makes it a popularity contest as shown by the selection of the starters this year and previous years. |

02.21.11 | Well, it is a fan event. They don't play any defense or really even try to win most years until the last few minutes. It's just a way to get the most famous players together to entertain and make the league a ton of money. |

02.21.11 | yeah I really don't even like watching the all-star game. I tried for awhile last night (before Californication came on), but it just ends up pissing me off. the highlights are enough for me, I just want to get back to the real basketball. |
PaperTigers
02.21.11 | Yep, I watched Californication and DVR'd the AS game. I planned to watch the whole thing later, but never made it through. |
