Double Albums: Too Much Of A Good Thing?

I'm not going to list a thousand double albums but seems to be a legitamate question.
1Say Anything
In Defense of the Genre

Many think this is a perfect example of a double album killing the release. I've come to like this almost as much as...IARB but was definately overwhelmed at first.
2Smashing Pumpkins
Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness

Seems to be generally highly lauded but has never appealed that much to me, despite some amazing tracks.
3Pink Floyd
The Wall

Obviously classic, perhaps my first psychadelic experience.
4Red Hot Chili Peppers
Stadium Arcadium

Compare to 1 and 2.
5 System of a Down
Mesmerize/Hypnotize

Separate release ala Guns and Roses Use Your Illusion 1 & 2; a better way to go?
