07.29.22 | The Wire is amazing
Shameless (US) version starts off strong as fuck (season 1-4) loses it's way a little, but is good (5-6) gets kinda bad (7-8) and is finally god awful (9-11)
So maybe watch up to season 6 |

Shemson
07.29.22 | Came to recommend Dark and Fringe and you mentioned them in first comment lol
My favourite lesser known shows
Also Garth Marenghi’s Darkplace is the best short comedy series ever, hence my avatar
I really loved Rick and Morty for the first couple seasons Spartan but it got pretty hit or miss as all comedies tend to when they start trying to churn episodes out to a schedule rather than from inspiration. Still some brilliant episodes every series though, no doubt |
Shemson
07.29.22 | Yeah Dewinged I’m really looking forward to Sandman!
American Gods was crazy if you dig Neil Gaiman, it missed the mark a lot but overall I enjoyed the ride |

07.29.22 | Also, nobody ever talks about Bates Motel. I loved that show and anything Vera Farmiga gets involved in tbh |
DoofDoof
07.29.22 | Deadwood is incredible, def all time top 5 drama series
The Americans I’m slowly working through on and off - it’s not compulsive viewing, above average but not much more
Obvious one you’re missing is Twin Peaks on the list but I’d add Succession too
I’m currently watching Euphoria which is good if hyper stylised, and just started the new horror From that’s being labelled another ‘new Lost’, seems alright so far

must see as a TV + music enthusiast |
Sharenge
07.29.22 | if I can only name two, The Sopranos and Deadwood take it with ease
True Detective is good too - if you're unaware, it is an anthology series so every season is its own standalone story which I guess is the same thing shows like Fargo and American Horror Story do
however, I have what would be considered by the vast majority of people to be a 'contrarian opinion' when it comes to True Detective in that I find the first season to be, while still great, quite overrated and I very much prefer the 2nd season as my favorite of the three that have been released thus far... unfortunately the 2nd season is almost unanimously regarded as the worst season, and it's not even that people feel it wasn't as good as the first.... typically it just gets totally shit on =( |

Yeah, loved 'Treme'... incentivised to watch it after visiting New Orleans for a month. Felt like it captured the soul of the place very well--good and bad, and had a good air of authenticity to it (at least, to my limited experience of the area). Great script and characters, anyway. |

07.29.22 | Sopranos, True Detective S1 and The Shield are all better than any show on this list. Sopranos and True Detective have been mentioned so far, but The Shield hasn't and that's a travesty because it is a phenomenal show. It's also so much better than The Wire.
Oh and also Mad Men is another fantastic top 5 contender. |

07.29.22 | peep show is easily one of the greatest comedies of all time. nearly every episode is intensely quotable, witty and awkward.
the fact that it doesnt follow the awful sitcom tropes of everything working out well in the end also makes it sort of brilliant. its two men who are both at fault in their own ways stuck in a purgatory of their own making, carrying out the same mistakes over and over and barely learning.
the 1st season is dated and quite low budget so i can see that putting people off. but its still funny as fuck so who cares. |

chernobyl is one i've been meaning to check out for a while, definitely gonna look into that soon. the wire, sopranos, and true detective are getting a lot of praise in here and elsewhere so i might look into those too.

07.30.22 | Mate that final season of Mr Robot is as good as any every. It turned a show I really liked into a show I absolutely love. Think ive seen it 3 times now probably due another. Agree on the soundtrack too. Have loads of friends who started it but gave up like 3rd season, everyone I've pushed to finish it felt the same. |
DoofDoof
07.30.22 | I did stop watching Mr Robot season 2 recently - every scene was a dream and then he’d puke in a sink, I’d probably have persevered but I watch most stuff with my wife and she just pulled the plug
Might watch the rest myself but I thought the Fight Club homage at the end of season 1 was also a bit laboured, dunno, came over lazy rather than clever to me
Didn’t seem a classic on the evidence presented in a season and a half but it could get there I guess, half of the first season was solid |
Gyromania
07.30.22 | Yeah I have to admit, season 2 was noticeably far weaker than the others. I did find myself losing interest there, but season 2 helps establish a few things for the following 2 seasons. and season 3 and 4 are very solid. season 4 in particular is up there for me. |

Ignimbrite
08.21.22 | it's not as good as the comic but the comic is (in my opinion) an absolute masterpiece, i don't hold it against the show for not *quite* meeting that standard |
IsisScript80
08.21.22 | ^ So far, I've seen the first 7 episodes of 'The Sandman', and I too am a massive fan of the comic (absolutely right in calling it a masterpiece).
The series so far IMO, veers wildly from cringey, sub-par 'BBC 'Dr. Who' (which TBH, it feels like most of the time) to something approaching great. It's adapting something fantastic, and when it works it's effective because it has such a rich well to draw from.
It's interesting because I'm concurrently watching HBO's mid-2010s 'The Leftovers' for the first time, and thus far (mid-point in Season 2) is phenomenal. The treatment in adaptation, be it pacing, direction and having actors actually seem to BELIEVE in the words they're saying is paramount. I find the majority of this somewhat lacking in 'The Sandman' most of the time, which is unfortunate because with the right treatment it could have been incredible opposed to 'sometimes very good'. |

08.23.22 | Gyro, glad you liked 'Succession' that much.
'Sandman' I'm not blown away by so far, but then I wasn't too amazed by 'American Gods' either (I abandoned that end of Season 2). I'll stick with 'Sandman' but something's not quite on point - I mean there isn't even a lead actor as engaging as Ian McShane which doesn't help.
West World season 4 was an improvement but some of the plot points seemed ridiculously contrived even by that show's standards. The main objective for the writers I think was allowing the final season to be a victory lap/'return to the beginning' and they've manufactured that 100% going by the set up at the end of this season's last episode. Ed Harris was on great form this season anyway.
Saul ended well, last four episodes actually did the perfect job in retrospect.
First episode of 'House of the Dragon' was decent, 'Return to King's Landing' basically. Going to be a backstab fest. |
fogza
08.23.22 | Justified is good and Midnight Mass is essential. A few also mentioned Twin Peaks, the return is the best thing I've ever seen on TV. Maniac was pretty good, suprised at the reaction to Mr Robot season 2, easily the best season. Barry is good but the ending to season 1 felt so tragic I haven't picked up season 2. Got to also pick up Orphan Black, massively underrated. |
Egarran
08.23.22 | People are unironically saying that The House of Dragons is good. |
protokute
08.23.22 | Been watching Justified these days, already on season 4, and i'm digging it, not one of the best things I ever watched, but it's pretty cool.
It's really a shame, no one has mentioned Lost yet, and yeah, I know it has its flaws, but damn what is done right makes me forgot all of it, just go with the flow of the story and let yourself be immersed in it, and there's a fair chance you will have a great time.
Shootout to the guy that recd Freaks & Geeks, it's truly a lovely series, the show My Once Called Life is excellent too.
Mad Men is amazing, it took me awhile to get into it too though, but it's worth it, Elizabeth Moss is the MVP. Speaking of Moss, The first three seasons of Handmaid's Tale was pretty dope, but I stopped watching it and never came back somehow.
Another amazing Drama show that I haven't seen mentioned is Rectify, really really good.

08.23.22 | ^ It's on shaky ground to start with... they fundamentally ballsed-up the mainline show from around Season 5 onwards--and especially when they had to fanfic a conclusion when they ran out of books to draw from.
Spin-offs, prequels, sequels, etc. etc., are in the vast majority of cases, cash-grabs relying on dopey name/brand recognition. So in this case, it'd have to go some (i.e. be better than the show it's based on, which is rare). |

I think George R.R. Martin is going to more closely plot this show with the other writers - basically he's fully involved so I trust this a lot more, he clearly left GoT to mostly be wrapped up by others towards the end, more just a consultant
The end of GoT was mostly maneuvering for big set pieces and effects and tbh I didn't mind it so much but it wasn't anywhere near as good as the first 4 or 5 seasons by the end |

Gyromania
08.24.22 | Maybe I'm just a basic bitch, because I thought the first ep of House of the Dragon was solid. It wasn't a masterpiece, but it did what it set out to perfectly fine. It introduced some noteworthy characters (Daemon seems promising and Matt Smith was a great casting choice) and set up the conflict of succession. It was nice to see the capital again and how it differs from the one in GoT, being set over a century in the past. Looking forward to hopefully seeing some more iconic locations and how they've changed too. Idk, I'm cautiously optimistic about this series. I think it's doomed to have lower ratings though, if only for the fact that it will be examined with great scrutiny by those embittered by what GoT became |

08.24.22 | Yeah it had the charm surreal nature of the books, I was really pleased with the costumes and set designs, seemed like high budget stuff to me. Some of the episodes they absolutely nailed too, like the house hanging on the cliffside. The whole atmosphere of that one was just perfect. and yeah NPH killed that role |
FreakMachine
08.24.22 | I think it's my favorite series ever, although Stranger Things might pip it, and Doctor Who |

forgot how much of an arrogant narcissist walt is straight from the beginning"
That's one of the (many) genius aspects about that show... his arc was one of the most organic I've ever seen, and it's on a rewatch that you see that all the seeds were there from the get-go. Pure brilliance. |
Gyromania
08.24.22 | If something else beats Severance for best show 2022 I'll be shocked |

08.24.22 | Adding to the choir of True Detective fans here, Season 1 is ace TV. Unfortunately can't comment on the other two seasons bc i never watched them in full but apparently they are good, at the very least.
ALSO suprised at how little Twin Peaks has been mentioned. The first two seasons are monumentally influential for a lot of cable TV, and season 3 (The Return) is Lynch's magnum opus |
gryndstone
08.24.22 | Also I see death note in there and i'm gonna rec Durarara. slice of life/mystery/drama that doesn't take itself as seriously as Death Note but i feel like maybe there's overlap there |

08.25.22 | fogza - half way through Midnight Mass and it’s one of the best horror series I’ve seen (so far) |

08.25.22 | it pretty much keeps being good
it's all about whether you like those existential stoner monologues |

08.25.22 | I made it 4 episodes into Midnight Mass and gave up. Super boring show, despite having one of the best shooting locations ever |

This is actually super on point because much like how the overarching narrative of Nathan for you is that Nathan is a lonely unloveable loser the overarching narrative of your show would be exactly the same |
conesmoke
08.26.22 | Nathan is a fucking brilliant specimen of man and all are graced by his presence how dare you |

08.26.22 | "DARK is perfect and I will not here otherwise!" hard +1
Best show I've ever seen. It's a slowburn so you have to bear with it for the first couple of episodes but the amount of times I was blown away by revelations and intricacies made it my favorite show of all time, up there with peak GoT and Breaking Bad.
"I loved Dark but it gets too complicated" It is complicated, but that's why https://dark.netflix.io/en exists. It honestly helps a ton and you can set up at which ep you are and get a complete overview of what's going on and who's who. |

Nice, show is a triumph |
Gyromania
08.26.22 | What's so good about it? It seems to follow the same exact formula as other Netflix horror shows, with the added detriment of endlessly dull monologues. It focuses more on drama than horror and is so slowly paced. I only saw 4 or 5 episodes but nothing about it was remotely scary |
Shemson
08.26.22 | Midnight Mass completely lost the plot halfway through.
It had really good creepy vibes and tension in the first episode or so and I thought it was a return to Hill House quality writing but then after a couple of reveals it was just a bit boring.
Great to see praise for A Series Of Unfortunate Events, loved that! |
Gyromania
08.26.22 | I had the same reaction to Midnight Mass, Shemson. Thought the first ep set it up decently but then nothing ends up happening for another 4 or so hours. I had a similar issue with Hill House (but I like that way more) where I think it had some great things going for it but it just gets so boring and all the tension and fear is annihilated in the second half. Honestly think the director is super weak, but his strengths are amazing sets and cinematography |
Shemson
08.26.22 | I really like the writer/director Mike Flanagan myself.
I first saw him take a pointless horror sequel Ouija 2 and turned it into a brilliant movie so always looked out for him then he got Hill House and for me that was the best ever horror tv series, it did peak midway but I enjoyed the whole thing.
Bly Manor was a good gothic horror that suffered from never hitting the heights of Hill House but MM was a big let down. |
Rolling Girl
08.26.22 | Harley Quinn
The Rehearsal
The Magicians
Glow
Brand New Cherry Flavor
Haunting at Hill House / Bly Manor
Metalocalypse (Though the first season or so is very rough tbh) |
fogza
08.26.22 | "What's so good about it?"
I don't really want to go into spoiler material but I thought the character motivation was actually fairly original. The acting is top notch from most of the cast, and the dual commentary on religion and addiction was excellent. It's more of a tragedy than a straight horror and if one sees it as that you might enjoy it more, although there are some memorable, frightening scenes. |
Shemson
08.26.22 | Lol Brand New Cherry Flavour was absolutely mental, I enjoyed that one!
I also enjoyed The Magicians, there were some great characters there |
Deez
08.26.22 | Maybe I'm just a basic bitch, because I thought the first ep of House of the Dragon was solid'
It was. I thought the dragons looked a bit shit and I have major trust issues about giving this fucking world (tv based one) any of my time anymore but it was semi promising. |
Gyromania
08.26.22 | fogza - I might return to it at some point, but overall I feel like this is the third miss for me. I still love the first few eps of Hill House though. Bly Manor... not so much. But wait a min, this guy also did Dr Sleep? because I loved that movie |
Gyromania
08.26.22 | Deez: Yeah agreed about the dragons. They sometimes looked a bit unreal in GoT too but they looked especially CGI to me here. One of those things that's hard to show in plain daylight without noticing flaws |
WatchItExplode
08.26.22 | Sandman was super lame until episode 4 or 5 and then it blew me away.
Peacemaker was actually a riot and I expected to hate it.
Reservation dogs never gets mentioned but it's one of the more interesting and unique comedies there right now.
The rehearsal is like a comedic inception... I was smelling burnt toast back half of the series.
Severance is the best thing I've seen in the last year. |
Gyromania
08.26.22 | High five! Severance club all the way. That show only has one season out but I feel like it's already peaked. Probably an actual 10/10.
I'm yet to see Sandman but that's an interesting take. So the latter half is just way better? I only saw one scene prior to the show's release, introducing death and I feel like the nailed it but I know a lot of people were unhappy about the casting. |
Gyromania
08.26.22 | I might watch Peacemaker. I thought it looked rly w/e and I wasn't nearly as into Suicide Squad as others to begin with. |
Egarran
08.26.22 | Sandman ep. 11 was a nice surprise.
Couldn't get into Peacemaker. He just annoys me and not in the intended way. |
WatchItExplode
08.27.22 | I actually hate marvel and DC stuff. But I might be a fan of James Gunn. Cena was the perfect meathead for this role.
And you had the first few episodes of sandman. We're setting up the universe or whatever and were very boring honestly. Then there's a whole episode set in a diner and it just blows everything up for the hell of it. And you realize the show is not going to be anything like how it initially presented |
Shemson
08.28.22 | Yeah Gyro, Flanagan made Dr Sleep too, when it comes to building tension and interesting visuals he’s an outstanding director imo
To me Sandman was like 6/10 first episodes then the middle two were 9/10 some of the best stories I’ve seen this year but I thought the final episodes were rubbish! The vortex storyline was weak and dragged and the only saving grace was the stuff around the Corinthian and his fellow breakfast enthusiasts.
The surprise final episode was cool though. |
DoofDoof
08.28.22 | What I will say about Midnight Mass (before I watch the final ep) is that if Hamish Linklater's performance hadn't been as good/the role was taken by someone else the whole thing might have fallen flat.
His performance is one of my favourites in ages, absolutely perfect. |
Shemson
08.28.22 | Yeah the acting and production on MM was still top tier, definitely. Just the plot jumped the shark a bit early for me I think! |
DoofDoof
08.28.22 | I have no issue with the plot…unless the finale is awful
I don’t like trad ‘jump scare’ horror too much so this worked for me |
Shemson
08.28.22 | Me neither mate, I’m a big fan of Flanagan’s other work and much prefer a good haunted house movie than a jump scare slasher flick.
I think I prefer mystery and not knowing why mysterious things are happening and being eased into it rather than MM which after a couple episodes was like ‘boom - this is an X story and there’s the X’ |
twlight
08.28.22 | lets bring back Movies |
DoofDoof
08.28.22 | Shemson - I think as fogza said it's the motivations and plans of 'Father Paul Hill' that remain mysterious up until near the end rather than the 'creature reveal' or anything more traditional |
fogza
08.28.22 | Got into Sandman until the vortex plotline, then I gave up. Acting quality and script drops off the cliff. |
fogza
08.28.22 | "fogza - I might return to it at some point, but overall I feel like this is the third miss for me."
No judgement, life is too short to waste time on 6+ hours of something you don't like. I think the scene on the small boat with Riley and Erin was one of my fave TV moments in a long while though |
Shemson
08.28.22 | Yeah the death storyline, David Thewlis stuff and the story where he met the same guy every 100 years we’re excellent and then suddenly it was like a whole different team of writers finished off the series - even Stephen Fry couldn’t save them |
DoofDoof
08.28.22 | 'I think the scene on the small boat with Riley and Erin was one of my fave TV moments in a long while though'
Yeah, I still was 60% sure I knew the way I thought that would work out, but I had 40% of doubt - and yes it was actually moving/harrowing |
Shemson
08.28.22 | That was a good scene in MM, definitely the main one that stuck with me |
Egarran
09.06.22 | HotD is not quite GoT quality but it's good enough.
But I thought that Daemon action scene in ep.3 was kinda lame. He went through many bad tropes during that assault. Can't be hit by arrows, enemies attack him one at a time, he's backed up by an ex machina dragon - all in jump cuts.
I don't understand how this is still a thing. It's ok in 70's karate movies but not anymore, guys. |

Also I’m thoroughly enjoy house of the dragon so far. I was very skeptical going into it, but 3 episodes into the season and I’m already back on board. I feel like most people are going to, or currently do, really enjoy it, except for the “anything besides s1-4 is trash” people |
