Most Disappointing/Bad Albums 2019

2019 brought with it some spectacularly shit albums, as well as a handful of letdowns. These are my picks for the worst of the worst.
1Chance the Rapper
The Big Day

"I love my wife" the album.
2Kanye West
Jesus Is King

I love Kanye. He's a tremendous douchebag in real life and his clothing line is possibly the most pretentious and pathetic thing I've ever seen, but he's always been a fire producer and even his lesser albums have some redeemers. ye was his first album to be devoid of any truly great tracks, but it wasn't the worst thing ever, just an underperformer. This, however. Idk what the fuck this is, but it's terrible front-to-back, loaded with cringe-y gospel shit and weak ass beats and melodies. Hearing the album that made him an even greater household name at the start of the decade and then comparing it to the album he chose to end the decade on really puts things into perspective.
3FKA Twigs
Magdalene

Pitchfork the album
4Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds
Ghosteen

I really don't understand what people see in this. It's mawkishly sentimental, it features a ton of annoying backing vocals (like the ones in "Ghosteen Speaks"), it has ambiance that sounds akin to someone screwing around with their first keyboard and thinking they're making good shit, it has annoyingly over enunciated vocals ("Waiting For You"). I could go on and on. It just strikes me as incredibly amateurish and Disney-like from a group that are capable of so much more. Hopefully he moves past this depressive phase in the future and goes back to making actual music.
5Opeth
In Cauda Venenum

I'd be lying if I said I had high hopes for this, but it was getting decently hyped up by some users on here, which got me regrettably a bit excited to hear it. Certainly not the weakest of Opeths decade of strictly prog albums, but it excels in boring at almost every turn. Still baffles me to no end that a band with such a unique blend of dm and prog elements would ditch one for the other and blend in more with their contemporaries. Very upsetting career trajectory, not expecting them to ever return to glory at this point (and all that said, Heritage is still a pretty great time, and they definitely do have some good songs on all their albums from the 2010s)
6Lana Del Rey
Norman Fucking Rockwell!

Once again, very out of touch with people on this one. I must be one of the few people here who thinks her debut completely shits on this in almost every category. Where are the melodies? Where are the hooks? This thing has to be the most homogeneous record I've heard all year. It goes in one ear and right out the other, and I really don't get the insane amount of accolades thrown at it. It's the same monotone Lana but without the hooks that made her music tolerable (and even superb at the best of times).
7Sun Kil Moon
I Also Want to Die in New Orleans

Another shadow of his former self, Kozelek just keeps churning out these lazy pieces of shit and passing them off as art with his cool laissez-faire attitude.
8Astronoid
Astronoid

Possibly the most annoying album of the year. I've already said all that needs to be said in my review.
9Vampire Weekend
Father Of The Bride

Not nearly as bad as most of the stuff on here, and it does have a few great tunes, just feels really unfocused and a bit generic coming 6 years after the superb Modern Vampires.
10Glass Beach
The First Glass Beach Album

Amateurish and frequently annoying.
11Refused
War Music

Wtf is this? Some bands should really just call it quits.
12Alcest
Spiritual Instinct

His weakest album.
13Bat For Lashes
Lost Girls

Was really hoping for a return to form here, but this just confirms that Two Suns was a fluke, which saddens me.
14Flying Lotus
Flamagra

Wasn't super huge on You're Dead but thought it had some phenomenal cuts - and to be fair, this one has some great stuff too, like "Black Balloons Reprise" and "Land of Honey" and "Fire Is coming", but on the whole the album fails to congeal. It's a collection of half-assed ideas and slickly produced but ultimately hollow-sounding, washed out tunes that do nothing to elevate or progress the album. Likely his most disjointed and lazy sounding project to date.
15Pixies
Beneath the Eyrie

There was a time when I was clamouring for a Pixies comeback, around 2012 when I really got into Surfer Rosa and Doolittle and considered them an all-time great band. Now with the addition of Beneath the Eyrie, their 3rd consecutively bad album this decade, it's hard to look at them the same. Proof that some bands should just hang it up while they've still got it.
