07.27.11 | cmon academy, beltran had 2 seasons that lived up to expectations. i liked him when he was healthy, and he was always a terrific defender, but i dont know if he was worth all the time the mets invested in him |

07.27.11 | J.D. Drew... |
CelestialDust
07.27.11 | but seriously... mets are done now. reyes is going to pull his hammy again next week and wright is going to collide with murphy on a pop up to the mound any second now |
theacademy
07.27.11 | @downer: it's weird because most people seem to think that, but if you actually look at the numbers, he was pretty great, I mean, not VLAD, but definitely better than Damon, Drew, Soriano, Lee, Wells, and Torii Hunter.
his numbers for the 7 years he was a met are basically identical to the 7 years of his career that came before, only with a slightly higher OPS. 5 All star games, 3 gold gloves, and 3 (not including the votes he may get this year) seasons finishing with MVP votes... |
theacademy
07.27.11 | also out of all those other deals, NONE (except Wells, which is still inexplicable to me) of the players were tradeable (altho the red sox, angels, and yankees aren't the types of teams to trade) and the pitcher we got from the giants is like, better than mejia. AND theyre paying like 4.5 million dollars. |
Inveigh
08.15.11 | well I mean if you wanna go back a long way then there's Barry Bonds when he went to the Giants from Pittsburgh
but that's setting the bar pretty high |
BigHans
08.15.11 | hi Carlos, Im Adam Wainwright, prepare to be fucking FROZEN. |
theacademy
08.15.11 | thats cold, man |
theacademy
08.15.11 | also the bonds deal wayyyyyyy predates this discussion |
BigHans
08.15.11 | theres actually a really great piece on grantland.com defending Beltran, he gets alot of hate for that one moment plus his recent injury history, but dude was a solid player and is playoff average is actually ridiculous. |
theacademy
08.15.11 | his regular season totals + avg. for his entire pre-mets and mets tenure is actually freakishly similar |

08.15.11 | does ichiro count |

08.15.11 | one of the most brutal damn pitches ever. Wasnt Wainwright a rookie then? Dont think anybody knew what kind of fucking lethal stuff he had at that point. |

08.15.11 | this is one of the most disgusting pitches ever

FromDaHood
08.15.11 | Beltran's a has-been |
theacademy
08.15.11 | ichiro is also 90's so no
im talking like around the time beltran signed/maybe the year or two... through today |
theacademy
08.15.11 | kershaw and lincey got better raw stuff than ww |
dammets
08.15.11 | Ichiro came to the us in 2001.
Compared to what Beltran did in the post season in 04 and 05, Beltran as a Met was a failure. |
Satellite
08.15.11 | magglio ordonez signed a 5-year deal with detroit in 2005. his numbers from 05-09 were insanely good.
http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/o/ordonma01.shtml |
theacademy
08.15.11 | beltran was already a met in 05
and why would you choose as an appropriate frame of reference TWELVE GAMES instead of:
a) a 6+ year career;
b) every other hitter in baseball;
c) every other center fielder in baseball; |
theacademy
08.15.11 | also youre right about ichiro being 2001 i always fuck up 99 vs. 01... easy to remember same year as pujols tho
@Satty i remember the mets almost signed magglio as well. id have to say beltrans deal was better tho. |
theacademy
08.15.11 | (looking back) |
iarescientists
08.15.11 | if we're being completely honest, the best signing of recent years is dustin pedroia
2008: wins MVP, WAR: 5.2, salary: $457,000
2009: WAR: 4.9, salary: $1,750,000
2010: WAR: 3.7, salary: $3,750,000 (missed half the season due to injury)
2011 (so far): WAR: 6.2 (only behind Jose Bautista) salary: $5,500,000 |
Satellite
08.15.11 | whoa, the tigers just traded for delmon young. might be the end for maggs. |
theacademy
08.15.11 | except dustin pedroia was drafted by the red sox, buddy |
theacademy
08.15.11 | delmon young is still only 25. thats a great get |
IrishJay91
08.15.11 | i think he might be referring to them resigning Pedroia (or rather, extending his contract) in 2008.
his salary is nothing compared to what other players of similar quality are making. |
iarescientists
08.15.11 | yah |
theacademy
08.15.11 | re-signing or extension =/= free agent contract. they're extremely different.
if we were talking about re-signings, there wouldn't be any discussion because of albert pujols |
CelestialDust
08.15.11 | let's go mets! we're clinching that NL East baby |

08.15.11 | Hold on for a sec while I gather enough breath to laugh harder than ever before. |
FromDaHood
08.15.11 | IS the answer Magglio Ordonez? |
theacademy
08.16.11 | no there is no answer cuz the beltran signing was the 2nd best (after vlad) |
