Gateway Albums

I spent the majority of my youth listening to country music. Becoming a cowboy is what is expected of every kid growing up in rural Wyoming and so country music makes up the majority of radio airplay. Unfortunately dial up internet wasn't available in the region of Wyoming where I grew up until the late 90's and by the time my parents decided to "catch up with the times," Napster had just appeared on the p2p map. Suddenly, the world I knew felt very small. Modern technology allowed me to break away from the mold. These are the albums that have broadened my taste for music.
1Deftones
Around the Fur

Despite country music being the primary music choice, nu-metal began increasing in popularity, especially in the smaller Wyoming towns. Several of my "in-town" friends became infatuated with Korn and Limp Bizkit. However, I was fortunate enough to discover this gem early on.
2Radiohead
OK Computer

It was through the Deftones and my cousin that I stumbled upon Radiohead's OK Computer. Meanwhile, my friends were still listening to Garth Brooks and Fred Durst...Gold Cobra = AOTY!
3Reel Big Fish
Turn the Radio Off

Our school hired a new band instructor during my second year in jazz band. He was originally from California and it was apparent that he didn't belong in Wyoming. His time at our school was short lived, but by the time he left, I was hooked on ska. Although the majority of ska isn't that inspiring, this album is a classic.
4Thursday
Full Collapse

It wasn't until I purchased my first car that I was introduced to post-hardcore. I made a trip to Utah to visit several of the universities. During my visit, I ran into a college student who was trying to sell a pair of tickets to a show. I had no clue who Thursday was, but the tickets were cheap and I really had nothing better to do so I attended my first non-country concert.
5Death Cab for Cutie
Transatlanticism

I was never a fan of Indie music until I decided to take a road trip with a friend across the state of Wyoming. Unfortunately, he left his cd collection behind. Fortunately, the only cd that he had was Death Cab for Cutie's album Transatlantacism. I think we played that album about eight times through before we reached our final destination. The fact that this album is still enjoyable to this day speaks volumes about its musical quality.
6Haste the Day
Burning Bridges

Roommates...I hate them. My college roommate snored so loud that I had to find something to muffle the sound at night. Metalcore became a necessity during this part of my life.
