Essential Twinkles

so you want to know which midwestern-twinkly-type-emo stuff is pretty good but you don't feel like wading through waves of shit like Dads to find it? you're welcome! here's the 27 best albums of the genre, the motherfucking canon.
1american football
american football

the rational evolution from cap'n jazz, another Kinsella adventure; check this out if you've ever had feelings, but don't feel guilty if you only like 2 songs from it
2a bunny's caravan
draining puddles, retrieving treasures

overflowing with post-rock, like whole lotta crescendos in here. just really gorgeous songwriting that makes this feel meaningful; plus, this band has coolness like no other seeing as they only met to record this masterpiece and never played a single show #cred
3 cap'n jazz
shmap'n schazz

predictable but essential; early Kinsella stuff from a bunch of rowdy 12 year-olds, so Sputnik should feel among its peers here; Analpabetology has quite a lot of shit on it so I like this LP better
summer fences

growly grumbly voices overtop twinkly, dynamic stuff; didn?t realize that the artwork is a reindeer farting until like 5 years after I listened to this obsessively; something?s felt different about this album ever since
5crash of rhinos

an English Castevet that learned to rawk and, instead of putting drawing farting reindeer on their cover, were busy listening to Fugazi and Minutemen instead of Explosions in the Sky; lotta fucking energy on this album
all i could find was you

a pretty bad album that I?m a little ashamed to put here but it has "Amateur Cartography" on it which references The Weakerthans and drinking backpacks of beer so
7empire! empire! (I was a lonely estate)
home after three months away

Keith Latinen writes more whiny poetry and just barely puts some guitars in the background and it?s the best 12 minutes of your life
8empire! empire! (I was a lonely estate)
what it takes to move forward

Keith Latinen writes whiny poetry and forgets to take out all of the guitars and it?s the best hour of your life culminating in that guy you wish was on the album more
9ghosts and vodka
addicts and drunks

proof that twinkly emo can be cool, too #guitarzonguitarz
10grown ups

zazzy as fuck
11hightide hotel
porch luck

the Jason Schwartzman of Midwestern emo
this conversation is ending starting right now

one of the most consistent albums here or anywhere, Knapsack are the Third Eye Blind of this style; they infuse really catchy hooks and an alt. rock aura into this stuff
13merchant ships

I don't even listen to this band
the power of failing

I don't even listen to this band [2]
15my heart to joy
seasons in verse

sometimes a single song is all you really need to carry an entire album
at home with owen

barely qualifies for this style as it's probably more just straight-up singer-songwriter, but Kinsella's sadness has never been more palpable seriously this guy needs a hug
amateurs and professionals

sometimes a single song is all you really need to carry an entire album [2]
18pity sex
dark world

[Eric remember to write something witty here like a pun about ?pity sex? or something; if in need of something, make fun of Trebor. somehow if you haven?t done that in the list yet]
19the player piano

under-appreciated band with mostly instrumental jams; also, they jam
false institutions

another emo band that kinda went to shit, but this album really does the crescendo-punkthing really well, here
21rockets and blue lights
a smashed city with flames and music in the air

Castevet before Castevet became CSTVT due to Castevet
22sharks keep moving
sharks keep moving

Minus the Bear before Sharks Keep Moving became Minus the Bear
fuck your emotional bullshit

overrated album that spurred a lot of horrible discussion tbh
24sunny day real estate
how it feels to be something on

underrated album that isn?t discussed nearly enough tbh
25the world is a beautiful place and...

you guys all blow Whenever, If Ever way out of proportion but this album is still above average
26you blew it!
grow up, dude

best pop-punk-indie-emo in years? YEARS!
27youth pictures of florence henderson
Unnoticeable In A Tiny Town, Invisible In The City

band that touches me soul (inappropriately); more post-rock infused emo that's better than most post-rock
