Bands That Have Led Me To Where My Tastes Are, And My Tastes

Over the years, I have developed a strange taste, that shouldn't have led me to where and what I like. Might have to do that as a baby, I apparently turned on the tv and watched mtv(1994) on my own, but I don't recall. Regardless, I wasn't able to listen to the radio, all my dad would play was Van Halen(which I'm not a fan of) and the Beatles(Obviously I dug it). Until fifth grade I had no exposure to anything but the two. That's where the list starts.
1Linkin Park

Well, in fifth grade I moved to a new house. I met a kid named Matt who turned me onto Linkin Park.
To be honest, I'm a little ashamed of my past fanboyism with them, but for all of fifth grade, they
dominated my music scene. Which caused my "overplay" habit. I have only recently broken that.
Regardless, I owe all musical direction to them. Maybe, watching MTV as a baby might have had a part
too. Anyway, Linkin Park got me to where I'd be in 6th grade.
2Mushroomhead

Along with My Chemical Romance and Velvet Revolver, I opted for more heavy and whiny tastes in
6th grade. I was infatuated with the aggression and tension between Mushroomhead, as they split
vocal duties. But before long I needed heavier. Much heavier.
3Amon Amarth

7th grade gave me Amon Amarth, and the whole year I would hide my love of Vikng Metal, and
openly embrace my love of Nine Inch Nails. Still, Amon Amarth was the band who bored me of metal.
I had gotten pretty heavy, then it dawned on me that it all sounded the same. I developed a disregard
of metal, and following Nine Inch Nail's softer side, I deconstructed my love of music and rose back
witha strange turn of direction.
4(7th continued) Mindless Self Indulgence

I really didn't see it coming, I just heard "Shut Me Up" and fell n love with the silly lyrics, "I like my
coffee black, just like my metal". I could relate to that, having adored metal. Before 7th grades end i
made a motley crew of friends, that were into a lot of strange genres. Not one to be a puppet i ignored
their reccomendations and leapt at another odd twist.
5Jonathan Coulton

7th grade Summer was the addition of a harmonic and witty twist. Living musical interests like a soap
opera sub plot(im writing that down). Having heard of his humorous takes on music in WoW made
videos, I investigated. AT the time I was playing WoW,(biiiig waste by the way) but the game turned
me on to Jonathan. With lyrics more intelligent than MSI and more harmonous acoustics, he swelled
my ears and heart with strange topics and comical misadventures. Awesome, in truth, he still owns a
good portion of my music playing now.
6Reel Big Fish

Still spinning off Jonathan, and reviving love of NIN, I wanted more humor, and by 8th grade I got it.
Emotionally, the band hit me hard. It reminded me of the early nineties, havin recognized "The Set
Up" it jerked nostalgia in me. I was so into funny ska that I enjoyed the Aquabats as well. 8th grade I
think was the composite of years of varied taste thrown together.
7Coheed and Cambria

8th grade took an intricate turn. I was at the peak of my game, musically and socially, I mean most
people liked Sublime at my school, but I never did. But that didn't stop me from enjoying it with Reel
Big Fish thrown in. I loved underdogs. I met a kid named Jacob Koranski and a student teacher, the
awesome Mr.Keefer. We would have musical debates, they loving Zeppelin and mostly bands i dig a lot
now. Still, I argued the validity of a new band, one that decimated Reel Big Fish(not entirely), Coheed
was the first band that made me listen to a cd all the way through, and I was obsessed. 8th grade
was bad academically but there was a lot of accumulation of styles thrown in my face. Friends giving
me all these other bands, futile then as i loved Coheed.
8The Mars Volta

8th grade summer, an awesome summer, probably the best that far. Tiring of Coheed(too many
listens) I heard of this band. At first the singer annoyed me. Then I loved it. Becoming the new
Coheed, the bands rivalled each other until i tired a lot of both, but then Mars Volta eventually won.
9Summer Continued(various bands)

While Mars Volta dominated the scene for a long time, there were also bands growing on me at this
point, Flaming Lips, Portugal. the man, Ween, old bands resurfacing, Nirvana, Smashing Pumpkins, so
many different sounds, even The RAmones, the sex pistols, the dead kennedies, the misfits, all came
together to the current status.
10Pink Floyd/Flaming Lips

The Flaming Lips took roughly a year to get into, Pink Floyd as well, but now that im currently into
them, a lot, along with many other bands(see favorites) I have to admit what an odd trip it was to
this conclusion. Pretty nice conclusion though am I right? "Look at the trees, Look at the river, isn't
good?"
