05.03.12 | depends how they make it. if it's styled like WoW (which pretty much every mmo nowadays is), it will definitely be terrible. if they change up that whole formula and keep the first-person perspective, more open world environment (think ultima online with 1st-person - throwback!), it could be cool. would require multiple, huge servers though |
Niceinvader
05.03.12 | If they take out about 60% of the NPCS and fulfill those roles with player characters that have to work together to populate and enrich the world. That would be amazing. 1st person seems like a must for this series. |

As much as I want to believe that I don't buy it. Developers are looking for cheap and easy ways to get cash and using a tried and true formula like WoW's does just that. All of these big MMO's do the same. I remember when everyone thought SWTOR was going to break the chains and look how it ended up.
This game will not be all Bethesda - ZeniMax Media has their hands in it - so don't expect it to be Bethesda through and through. Even so, I doubt any serious mods aside form the kinds you find in games like WoW to come through. |

05.04.12 | well if you look at any new MMO's they are almost all dropped monthly subscriptions in favour of a free to play (or free to play once you buy it) model. And I mean maybe after WoW goes away monthly subscriptions are going to come back but I don't think people will want to switch back to such an expensive system especially when new MMO's will have a lot more competition than WoW ever did.
And if you meant "WoW formula" in terms of combat I really don't think developers are going to rely on a system used ten years ago to overcome now nonexistent technical limitations also it's really fucking boring mashing 1 1 1 2 1 1 1 3 over and over again compared to something like GW2. |

05.04.12 | I am almost 100% positive monthly subscriptions will remain for quite a long time. And by WoW formula I mean combat, interface, general play style, world construction, questing system, dungeon/raid system, guilds, player interaction, etc etc |
klap
05.04.12 | i'm not really up to date on mmos but i doubt there are very many successful ones that don't have a paid model. i don't think that's really a question. what i would like to see is a change to combat/gameplay, as everything in the last ten years has been so boring. but it's what the people are buying so i don't know if they'll change it. there's a reason no one has made a game with ultima online's type of gameplay, even though that came out in the 90s |

05.04.12 | EvE Online is still the best MMO |

05.04.12 | I don't see them following that formula though.
What this will probably be is essentially a single player elder scrolls game until you get to the end game content where you will have big raids and quests against oblivion gates, dragon priests, red mountain, warp in the west. And this would be really cool cause WoW level grinding is the reason I have never played an MMO. |

05.04.12 | @klap GW was really successful and it was like 100% free and GW2 will be as big as WoW. Most haven't done well but that's because they were designed to be subscription and switched.
But LoL Team Fortress 2 (not mmo's but kinda) have made boatloads of money with a free to play model. It just requires smarter marketing to entice people into paying for addition things. |
klap
05.04.12 | it was successful but not on the level of wow. and you can't really project for gw2 at this point. it's pretty much unheard of for mmos to not be subscription-based i sincerely doubt that's going to change. and that's not even an issue for me, its the gameplay that matters |

05.04.12 | 'id agree with klap4music, the subscription is /ok/ if the game is /so/ compelling, which wow definitely was (is).'
Agreed with this. I played WoW for almost six years and never once had a problem paying the subscription fees, so long as the content was there, which it was for most of that time. It's just after a while the magic of exploring was lost in the expansions which made things so easy and made the game so bland. I remember first walking around places like Stranglethorn Vale and thinking "Whoa, this is the coolest thing ever" or running from Stitches in Duskwood at level 20. World of Warcraft was a fantastic game in its heyday, it's just that Blizzard has rung the world and its lore dry while simultaneously streamlining everything.
I would love to see this Elder Scrolls MMO be different than WoW but I see it running the same path if it follows that model of success (read: style of game) so closely (lest we forget WoW still is ~8 million PAYING subscribers). However, I feel as if it will be much like my experiences with Warcraft: brilliant at first but over time the magic wears off due to greed, a shitty player base, massive streamlining of the experience due to the demands of that player base, and an overall victimization of its own success. |

05.04.12 | i think taking Elder Scroll and making another WoW would at least be a decent business-strategy - a way to invite those jaded from WoW/GW, while taking advantage of the already large Elder Scroll fanbase

Even that doesn't have to be. If it isn't able to compete with other (probably more anticipated/well employed) stuff it doesn't seem like it has THAT big a chance. And with a schedule.. meh.. you can do only so much in certain amounts of time. |

But there'll probably still be some nice mods, even if the engine for it might not be up to date when it comes out. |

Depending on your definition of "open worlds" and how important that as criteria is. Are you talking about the monotony/open-worldedness with FO? If yes, then you're somewhat right, but there are definitely also quite some differences. My biggest hassle with Bethesda engines is partly rather "old-ish" look and a bit of a "primitive fighting system", although - as I mentioned - the great thing about those games is that you can pretty much mod ANYTHING. |

Well.. that's true. But as I said, the point is also a bit of how much of an important criteria the open world aspect is. And what open world implies, I mean I get it's often regarded as good. But often "open worlds" bring a lack of variety and proper plots/story with them. |
