The Art Of The Mixtape

A mixtape is not just ten songs on a CD. Or a tape. F**k you.
1Jimmy Eat World
Coffee And Cigarettes

The first song is crucial; either start with a bang, or take your time.
Awkward or abrupt starts to songs are never a good idea - either take your
listener by the scruff of the neck or ease them in. Don't make them wonder
if they started at track 1.
2Mest
I Melt With You

Track 2 should deviate slightly from the opener but not too much. At this
point you're trying to make the listener feel at ease listening to what you've
set down - a black metal track followed by an IDM cut is not going to bode
well for their expectations.
3Kanye West
Power

Now you can get more difficult, but be careful, because track 3 should
arguably be the best song on the disc. The scene and perhaps mood are
set - although you can definitely change the latter here - but the quality
should not deviate.
4Motion City Soundtrack
Last Night

If you want a lull, a track which is (hopefully) awesome but doesn't exactly
punch you, here's your chance. Go understated.
5Weezer
Ruling Me

Pick a song which kicks off hard, maybe loud and definitely with authority -
grab them back with passion and energy
6Bomb The Music Industry!
Fresh Attitude, Young Body

Maintain that spirit.
7The National
Geese Of Beverly Road

Have a free choice, but don't make it too enormous; the finale's coming and
you wouldn't want to, ahem, blow your load too early.
8Yellowcard
Grey

Pick up the tempo, pick up the volume, pick up the air of importance, but
remember not to peak too soon - hold something back.
9Say Anything
Cemetery

The penultimate track should be huge; it absolutely has to climax, and the
more epic, the better. You can skip track 10, but you can't skip this; this is
the most important song of the lot. Make it count.
10Steel Train
Fall Asleep

An epilogue. This should be cute or funny or in some way different. Short
works best.
