Scotland

As anyone who knows me will attest, I have a special fondness for music north of the border - so what better day to list my 10 favourite Scottish albums?
10RM Hubbert
Breaks and Bone

This spot could have been occupied by any one of RM Hubbert's three LPs. Give him
a listen, flamenco fans.
9Franz Ferdinand
Franz Ferdinand

The strongest record to emerge from the UK's mid-'00s indie explosion. Take Me Out
was my single of the decade.
8The Twilight Sad
Fourteen Autumns and Fifteen Winters

An incredible hub of volume, warmth and heart they've never quite managed to
match. Seeing this played live in its entirety last month was glorious.
7Bill Wells & Aidan Moffat
Everything's Getting Older

Part sung, part spoken-word, this collaboration with jazz pianist Bill Wells is without
doubt Aidan Moffat's strongest post-Arab Strap venture.
6Mogwai
Young Team

Mogwai have made more focused and fluid albums (Come On Die Young, Happy
Songs For Happy People), but this is the base from which their fearsome reputation
was forged.
5Primal Scream
Screamadelica

Possibly the most iconic of all Scottish albums, and for good reason. Hasn't aged a
day.
4Boards of Canada
Music Has the Right to Children

Probably my favourite electronic record. The eerie atmosphere BoC create remains
unique.
3Arab Strap
Philophobia

Booze-stained, perennially downcast and utterly filthy, Philophobia is the musical
embodiment of Scotland's dark underbelly.
2Frightened Rabbit
The Midnight Organ Fight

A record whose cathartic core never fails to stagger. It's probably good for the
artists in question - or at least their mental state - that records like this tend to be
one-offs.
1Belle and Sebastian
If You're Feeling Sinister

Simply a near-perfect collection of pop songs. Stuart Murdoch's genius in its purest
form.
