01.14.13 | I would say it's a good thing because it'll get people in independant record shops, but things never work out that smoothly unfortunately.
List is stuff I've been listening too this week. |

01.14.13 | why people would pay for digital files makes no sense to me |
anarchistfish
01.14.13 | might make the most of it if they start selling remaining stock cheap |

01.14.13 | why people would pay for digital files makes no sense to me [2]
i love HMV, the have Seinfeld seasons for like ten bucks and good deals on CDs most of the time |
BlueMoonRising
01.14.13 | RIP HMV, I GOT MOST OF MY FAVOURITE ALBUMS FROM THAT SHOP. STILL, FOPP IS BETTER LIKE YOU SAID. DISAGREE WITH THE DIGITAL FILES THING THOUGH MATE (A LOT OF THE MUSIC I'VE BEEN GETTING INTO LATELY I HAVEN'T BEEN ABLE TO FIND ANYWHERE-FOPP, HMV, INDEPENDANTS-SO I THANK THE INTERNET FOR THAT) THOUGH IT IS BETTER TO HAVE AN ACTUAL ALBUM IN HAND, YOU'RE RIGHT ON THAT IMPLIED REMARK. |
AliW1993
01.14.13 | I'm lucky in that Newcastle still has four independent record shops, all of which I favour over HMV. If they weren't there I'd be pretty devastated at this news. |
Gyromania
01.14.13 | i actually work at an hmv in the southern ontario region and i'm pretty sure we're not going out of business. actually, we just recently expanded our store by being the first hmv in canada to sell vinyls. the reason most music stores are closing is (prepare for the obvious) largely due to downloading, but you have to remember, hmv is a multimedia store. moreover, they sell a shit tonne of exclusive novelty items which has seen a huge influx in sales.
also, cool little fact: did you guys know that hmv stands for his master's voice? |
peaks40
01.14.13 | yeah hmv had rain dogs for 5 bucks |
Gyromania
01.14.13 | peaks: just bought that a few days ago haha. picked up some really good 5 dollar movies as well. big fish was one of 'em |
peaks40
01.14.13 | yeah, i always catch albums i love that nobody buys real cheap. even movies there. actually in quebec Zellers, i get movies for like 4 bucks |
peaks40
01.14.13 | thats cause its not in the U.s. andcas |
AliW1993
01.14.13 | @Matt: I don't know much about this kind of thing but I'm pretty sure it's only the UK branch that's going under. It's been in deep shit for a while, so it's not really any surprise. |
JohnnyoftheWell
01.14.13 | Gonna make a killing in the sales, but will miss it loads |
InfamousGrouse
01.14.13 | Damn, that narrows the number of 'reasonable' shops in my hometown down to about three. I think that leaves just the one record shop in the area and its stock was considerably diminished by HMV. I guess that'll give it a renaissance of sorts, the only problem being it doesn't really sell new releases. |
apert
01.15.13 | tbh, hmv was very overpriced and they only really stocked mainstream albums in my branch... still a shame since its been a classic british store for like 100 years |
bungy
01.15.13 | List is a disproportionate amount of Scottish
1 leaked? |
AliW1993
01.15.13 | You say that like it's a bad thing!
Nah it's not leaked, I received a promo copy ages ago. They're nice and prompt. |
Zeneren
01.15.13 | I liked Hmv because it was the only place I could get CDs/DVDs but honestly, sometimes the prices were ridiculous I mean £15 for a standard LP. Bit of a joke. |
demigod!
01.15.13 | "we just recently expanded our store by being the first hmv in canada to sell vinyls."
The 3 story HMV in downtown Montreal has sold vinyl for years im pretty sure. but Quebec isn't really Canada ( /Canadianjokes).
seriously though I'm happy to hear this as I do most of my music and TV shopping at HMV.

JamieTwort
01.15.13 | Haven't bought any CDs from HMV in a while due to them being overpriced and not stocking the stuff I want. Still pretty disappointed about this though especially seeing as there are hardly any independant CD/record stores where I live. |
manosg
01.15.13 | It's a shame when people lose their jobs. The bigwigs always find a way to survive, like roaches. I visited both HMV and Fopp when I lived in Glasgow and liked them both for different reasons. |
Chrisjon89
01.15.13 | used to go to HMV as a kid but it was fairly pricey. i think JB Hi-Fi might've kinda crowded them out in Australia. dunno. actually just googled it and they got bought out by Sanity and were all closed by 2010. the more you know.
oh and Low rules. |
thumbcrusher
01.15.13 | In my local town it was the only place to get CDs so this is a bummer. Got more stuff from Amazon due
to prices but I'd go and pick up a few discs on sale every so often. |
peaks40
01.15.13 | @Demi the hmv downtown is so awesome i can spend hours there, yeah quebec thinks they arent Canada but they're ignorant aind too prideful. the roads suck here |
anarchistfish
01.15.13 | do hmv UK sell vinyl? I don't go in there much |
InfamousGrouse
01.15.13 | My branch definitely don't Anarchist although I'd assume some of the larger ones do. Pretty sure their website has vinyl at least. |
anarchistfish
01.15.13 | I don't remember seeing them when I did go in there
either way their selection was still pretty mainstream |
thumbcrusher
01.15.13 | yeah it was, blink 182 and green day in the metal section haha |
anarchistfish
01.15.13 | 0.4% of music sales in the UK in 2012 were for vinyl
CD made up ~66% with digital taking up the rest
interesting |
JohnnyoftheWell
01.15.13 | do hmv UK sell vinyl? I don't go in there much
Mine does, but is pretty large so unsurprising |
JohnnyoftheWell
01.15.13 | They had Koloss on vinyl last time I checked |
Spec
01.15.13 | This is only UK HMV isn't it? |
JohnnyoftheWell
01.15.13 | I guess so |
InfamousGrouse
01.15.13 | Physical copy sales have been down the shitter for the last couple of years. I remember reading that Adele's 21 CD annual sales were eclipsed by the newest edition of CoD in only 24 hours. |
wakeupdead
01.15.13 | I saw Blackwater park, just the CD with the 8 songs, for $26.99 at HMV..... it's their own fault really if they are charging ridiculous prices like that. Plus, they seemed to only have the classic albums, or the newest release for any artist most of the time. Used Cd places are so much better and cheaper, I recommend them |
JohnnyoftheWell
01.15.13 | Ebay and amazon normally win, but HMV sometimes sell some cool stuff with 2 for £10 offers |
InfamousGrouse
01.15.13 | Yea, the only time I ever shop at HMV is for 2 for £10 dvds. I think the last physical CD that I bought there (that wasn't a present) was in 2011. |
JohnnyoftheWell
01.15.13 | Some of my fave cds came from hmv (The Illusion of Safety, Post, Hatebreeder) |
InfamousGrouse
01.15.13 | Pretty sure my copy of Hatebreeder came from Music Zone. RIP. |
Spec
01.15.13 | Yeah Canada HMV is safe for now. It's not great compared to local music shops but its nice to have at malls and stuff. There's one here that actually has a pretty damn good selection when it comes to metal and hardcore. |
AliW1993
01.16.13 | People have always complained about the prices but that's mostly a thing of the past. In the '90s they charged about £17 for CDs because they were booming at that point, and no one seems to have forgotten.
I think that part of their ploy to stay in business over the past few months has been to stock more vinyl. They've had some decent items, but one of my local independents sells more or less the same stuff for a pound or two cheaper, so I've always favoured that. |
JamieTwort
01.16.13 | "Pretty sure my copy of Hatebreeder came from Music Zone. RIP."
Music Zone was great, bought quite a lot from there when I was younger. |
