10.21.10 | Queens of the Stone Age - Rated R |
marksellsuswallets
10.21.10 | Of course there are tons of others, but these are the ones I've been digging most lately. |
marksellsuswallets
10.21.10 | Really bloc? I've ALWAYS hated the tones on pretty much every QotSA record...maybe it's that damn plexiglass guitar... |
witchxrapist
10.21.10 | I agree with Fear Before and Converge.
I REALLY like Through The Eyes Of The Dead's guitar tone on The Annihilation Of Expectation, and The Black Dahlia Murder's on Miasma, as far as metal goes.
I really really really like Words Paint The Sky's guitar tone too, most acoustics don't sound good in screamo, but damn, that sounds beautiful.
And Envy and Score One For Safety ofc. |
fr33convict
10.21.10 | As much as I hate to say list needz moar opeth the one on Ghost Reveries is beautiful. |
bloc
10.21.10 | Oh man, I love the tones that QOTSA put out, and I especially love how it's different on every single one of their albums.
And no fair about the plexiglass guitar, they just started using that! |
fr33convict
10.21.10 | QOTSA tone is bad it's good. It's got a rawness to it. |
marksellsuswallets
10.21.10 | Envy would have made the list if I had felt like doing like a 30 album list but I"m lazy. As far as metal tones go, I haven't really been feeling them much lately...they can get way too overproduced, same-y and tweaked for my taste.
The tones on Cobalt - Gin, Burst - Lazarus Bird, and Portal - Seepia are the only other metallic tones that are tickling my ear right now. |
marksellsuswallets
10.21.10 | bloc: yeah I know but I really hate that fucking thing...
convict: Opeth would also be here if I extended the list. |
SeaAnemone
10.21.10 | Fugazi - 13 Songs
Slint - Spiderland
first two that come to mind |
witchxrapist
10.21.10 | That's why the tone on The Annihilation Of Expectation is so good, they couldn't afford over-production. As for TBDM on Miasma, that's just an example of GOOD production, as opposed to bad over-production. |
marksellsuswallets
10.21.10 | Yeah, I generally like TBDM's tones because they feel like they actually have some mids in there, which is getting too rare in metal lately. |
liledman
10.21.10 | portals guitar tone is just ridiculously good. for other metal id say immolation and ulcerate - clear and crushing. underrated approach these days.
and guthrie govan probably has some of the best tone ive ever heard for a soloist.
my tips for gear: dont use a marshall. my avt is pissing me off so fucking much right now. |
witchxrapist
10.21.10 | Yeah, metal producers don't know what the hell they're doing for the most part, just like most metal musicians... kind of why most metal bands don't even realize how bad the production on their albums really is. |
witchxrapist
10.21.10 | "my tips for gear: dont use a marshall. my avt is pissing me off so fucking much right now."
my old band's guitarists both used marshall amps and they sounded fantastic, just fool around with your tone until you find something you like. |
witchxrapist
10.21.10 | Also, angl head + vader cab = way expensive, but INCREDIBLE sound. Another old band of mine's guitarist used that. |
bloc
10.21.10 | Definitely agree about Govan.
Half the metal guys out there are just using DI and re-amping and bang, they're done. |
marksellsuswallets
10.21.10 | I've never been able to stand Marshall's for whatever reason.
Right now I have an Orange AD30HTC running through an Orange 2x12 and a Vox 4x12. I really only ever use my Telecaster anymore but I still use my ESP Eclipse if I want to go heavier. I also have way too many pedals but eh...haha. |
liledman
10.21.10 | depends though witchxrapist, i want good jazzy cleans along with a nice warm beefy distortion, and marshall cant do either. ive fooled around with it for 4 years and i know how to get a good tone; the amp just sucks plain and simple.
i have an ibanez arc100 with some seymour duncans in it, into an ibanez ts-9 into the marshall avt275x. saving for a hughes and kettner trilogy and half cab. only pedals i really use are delay, so i want to get a tc electronics nova delay at some point. |
fr33convict
10.21.10 | My Marshall is great. I have issues with recording the tone for whatever reason though. |
marksellsuswallets
10.21.10 | The only pedals that I'm actually using at the moment are just a stock TS-9 Tube Screamer (which everybody should have honestly), an MI Audio Crunch Box, a Blackout Effectors Musket Fuzz, a Morley Volume Pedal, and an MXR Analog Delay...and a footswitch but that's not really a pedal. |
Ire
10.21.10 | "Also, angl head + vader cab = way expensive, but INCREDIBLE sound. Another old band of mine's guitarist used that."
i love you
some awesome choices.
i made my own just now
|
marksellsuswallets
10.21.10 | I'm assuming that's supposed to be an engl? A friend of mine had an engl for a while and I dunno...it always sounded flat...then he got a 5150 and his rig sounded ridic. |
witchxrapist
10.21.10 | yeah i meant engl. i fail at spelling sometimes lolol. |
Ire
10.21.10 | i've never understood the overwhelming love for the 5150. I mean, it's definitely an important amp but i've never liked it.
fender amps ftw |
Urinetrouble
10.21.10 | where hte fuck is Helmet/Page Hamilton? man has the thickest, crunchiest riffs of all time
also needs Dylan Carlson. His tones on The Bees Made Honey In The lion's Skull are thick and rich but with a clean sound |
liledman
10.21.10 | those engl pre-amps are reeeally nice |
marksellsuswallets
10.21.10 | It probably had a lot to do with the fact that he has a Tele with Warpig pickups in it too... |
liledman
10.21.10 | and yeah ire im not a big fan of 5150s either. |
marksellsuswallets
10.21.10 | I'm gonna just go ahead and say it...I hate Page Hamilton...I respect him...but I hate him... |
Urinetrouble
10.21.10 | fuck off son |
marksellsuswallets
10.21.10 | Helmet just bores me to tears. His guitar tone always feels like it's missing some high frequency to me and it's just too muffled. I'll gladly admit that he helped revolutionize that type of tone though... |
eternium
10.21.10 | I wish I had the money for a Marshall.
If I could have any amp, it'd be a Diezel VH4. |
Urinetrouble
10.21.10 | but his riffs were fantastic and his noisy jazz improv solos are some of the best ever recorded |
Ire
10.21.10 | fender is my joint but then again Sunn amps are the fuckin shit |
merriweather
10.21.10 | My Bloody Valentine - Loveles |
marksellsuswallets
10.21.10 | If you have the money for a Marshall then you have the money for an amp that's better than a Marshall... |
marksellsuswallets
10.21.10 | Ire: screw Fender for buying Sunn amps just so they could shut it down as competition... |
eternium
10.21.10 | If I had the money for a good Marshall (JCM, something like that), I would shop around for amps like a madman. |
liledman
10.21.10 | yeah marshalls are fairly overpriced... but then again everything here in australia is overpriced.
i love the fender deluxe twins. awesome cleans. |
eternium
10.21.10 | And why doesn't Fender realize that if Sunn amps were sold again, they'd go out like crazy? Unless they fucked up making them, which they probably would. Fender doesn't know how to metal. |
Urinetrouble
10.21.10 | fender only knows how to clasisc rock |
cvlts
10.21.10 | im a fan of that emtombed, buzzsaw guitar tone atm |
Ire
10.21.10 | Fender doesn't know how to metal.
false |
Ire
10.21.10 | fender only knows how to clasisc rock
dumb dumb dumb dumb |
Urinetrouble
10.21.10 | but ire, fender sucks nut. only good guitarists who use it are Eric Johnson and Michael Lee Firkins |
eternium
10.21.10 | I'd kill for a Telecaster Deluxe and a Jaguar though. And a Twin Reverb for the hell of it. |
Ire
10.21.10 | I can tell you have never owned a Fender amp in you life.
lol eric johnson |
liftyourhairyballs

10.21.10 | eric johnson rules son u dumb
no, u MAD |
eternium
10.21.10 | I've never heard a Fender amp have enough gain to handle metal. Aaron Turner is the only metal man I think of that uses a Fender (that isn't customized). |
eternium
10.21.10 | "WHERE'S THE ANALOG WHEN YOU NEED IT?"
Kurt Ballou. |
Ire
10.21.10 | I have a fender champion and a carvin 412 that handles just like a Sunn stack once you get a good OD in front of it.
Fender isn't great if you want a really tight and heavy attack but those amps are heaven if you're looking for everything else |
liledman
10.21.10 | duuuude eric johnson is fucking awesome |
beefshoes
10.21.10 | John Petrucci's tone on his solo album Suspended Animation. |
liledman
10.21.10 | and yeah only thing fender is missing is the tight bottom end, if you cant get enough gain out of one the you use too much gain in the first place. |
witchxrapist
10.21.10 | Also, I forgot to say, I think Periphery's guitar tone is wayyy too crunchy and compressed sounding. IDK it sounds dead. |
marksellsuswallets
10.21.10 | John Petrucci sux
liledman: too much gain is 99% of the problem nowadays... |
zarquan99
10.21.10 | I love the tone on Songs for the Deaf. owns Rated R any day |
witchxrapist
10.21.10 | "liledman: too much gain is 99% of the problem nowadays..."
wat? imo it's over-compression and scooped mids |
marksellsuswallets
10.21.10 | I guess what I mean is it's just all included...it's all just used to cover up the fact that nobody can play cleanly anymore anyway... |
Awesomesauce
10.21.10 | Corgan on Siamese Dream. |
liledman
10.21.10 | yeah for sure. its getting ridiculous now that everybody wants to be super technical and actual pride themselves on being technically proficient players, but cant play cleanly. oxymoronic. or just moronic.
scooped mids are just.... ugh... and combine that with lots of solid state gain, compressing whatever tone is left, then you have pure and utter shit.
back in the 70s dudes knew how to use compressors, it seems like nobody wants them now unless they want to have sustain in their paper thin tremolo equipped pieces of poop. |
wyankeif1337
10.21.10 | The tone on Altered Course - Isis is orgasmic. |
R6Rider
11.03.10 | Nightrage's A New Disease Is Born has got one of my fave distorted tones even though I don't like the album that much. |
BigTuna
11.03.10 | The Weakerthans
