I REALLY like Through The Eyes Of The Dead's guitar tone on The Annihilation Of Expectation, and The Black Dahlia Murder's on Miasma, as far as metal goes. I really really really like Words Paint The Sky's guitar tone too, most acoustics don't sound good in screamo, but damn, that sounds beautiful. And Envy and Score One For Safety ofc.

bloc 10.21.10	Oh man, I love the tones that QOTSA put out, and I especially love how it's different on every single one of their albums. And no fair about the plexiglass guitar, they just started using that!

marksellsuswallets 10.21.10	Envy would have made the list if I had felt like doing like a 30 album list but I"m lazy. As far as metal tones go, I haven't really been feeling them much lately...they can get way too overproduced, same-y and tweaked for my taste. The tones on Cobalt - Gin, Burst - Lazarus Bird, and Portal - Seepia are the only other metallic tones that are tickling my ear right now.

witchxrapist 10.21.10	That's why the tone on The Annihilation Of Expectation is so good, they couldn't afford over-production. As for TBDM on Miasma, that's just an example of GOOD production, as opposed to bad over-production.
marksellsuswallets 10.21.10	Yeah, I generally like TBDM's tones because they feel like they actually have some mids in there, which is getting too rare in metal lately.
liledman 10.21.10	portals guitar tone is just ridiculously good. for other metal id say immolation and ulcerate - clear and crushing. underrated approach these days. and guthrie govan probably has some of the best tone ive ever heard for a soloist. my tips for gear: dont use a marshall. my avt is pissing me off so fucking much right now.
witchxrapist 10.21.10	Yeah, metal producers don't know what the hell they're doing for the most part, just like most metal musicians... kind of why most metal bands don't even realize how bad the production on their albums really is.

bloc 10.21.10	Definitely agree about Govan. Half the metal guys out there are just using DI and re-amping and bang, they're done.
marksellsuswallets 10.21.10	I've never been able to stand Marshall's for whatever reason. Right now I have an Orange AD30HTC running through an Orange 2x12 and a Vox 4x12. I really only ever use my Telecaster anymore but I still use my ESP Eclipse if I want to go heavier. I also have way too many pedals but eh...haha.
liledman 10.21.10	depends though witchxrapist, i want good jazzy cleans along with a nice warm beefy distortion, and marshall cant do either. ive fooled around with it for 4 years and i know how to get a good tone; the amp just sucks plain and simple. i have an ibanez arc100 with some seymour duncans in it, into an ibanez ts-9 into the marshall avt275x. saving for a hughes and kettner trilogy and half cab. only pedals i really use are delay, so i want to get a tc electronics nova delay at some point.

marksellsuswallets 10.21.10	The only pedals that I'm actually using at the moment are just a stock TS-9 Tube Screamer (which everybody should have honestly), an MI Audio Crunch Box, a Blackout Effectors Musket Fuzz, a Morley Volume Pedal, and an MXR Analog Delay...and a footswitch but that's not really a pedal.

marksellsuswallets 10.21.10	I'm assuming that's supposed to be an engl? A friend of mine had an engl for a while and I dunno...it always sounded flat...then he got a 5150 and his rig sounded ridic.

Urinetrouble 10.21.10	where hte fuck is Helmet/Page Hamilton? man has the thickest, crunchiest riffs of all time also needs Dylan Carlson. His tones on The Bees Made Honey In The lion's Skull are thick and rich but with a clean sound

eternium 10.21.10	I've never heard a Fender amp have enough gain to handle metal. Aaron Turner is the only metal man I think of that uses a Fender (that isn't customized).

Ire 10.21.10	I have a fender champion and a carvin 412 that handles just like a Sunn stack once you get a good OD in front of it. Fender isn't great if you want a really tight and heavy attack but those amps are heaven if you're looking for everything else

liledman 10.21.10	yeah for sure. its getting ridiculous now that everybody wants to be super technical and actual pride themselves on being technically proficient players, but cant play cleanly. oxymoronic. or just moronic. scooped mids are just.... ugh... and combine that with lots of solid state gain, compressing whatever tone is left, then you have pure and utter shit. back in the 70s dudes knew how to use compressors, it seems like nobody wants them now unless they want to have sustain in their paper thin tremolo equipped pieces of poop.
