Favorite Guitar Tones

Pretty self explanatory...I was having a pretty heated discussion with ra friend a few days ago rabout Baroness's Blue Record. Personally, I rthink it's their best release yet (not to mention rone of last year's best) rbut he can't stand it...though he did admit that it had some pretty rrglorious fuzz tones, which got me thinking about the topic of this list. rYep. Also, if you're a rguitarist, feel free to talk about what kind of gear ryou use to create your own delicious tones. rIf you aren't...I guess you rcan somehow contribute to the discussion...
1Baroness
Blue Record

Reason for this list. Incredible fuzz tones, awesome distorted sounds, awesome
cleans, even great acoustic tones.
2BATS
Red In Tooth and Claw

That little bit of twang in the distortion is why I bought a Telecaster in the first
place. Plus, it gets heavy as balls.
3The White Stripes
White Blood Cells

Just because the fuzz tones are so unapologetically...fuzzy. Dead Leaves and
the Dirty Ground is fantastic.
4Capsule [US]
Blue

Further proof that Telecasters can create crushing sounds.
5Torche
In Return

Maybe it has something to do with the whole ridiculously thick strings, drop A
tuning, and aluminum guitar thing, but the tones on this album are ridiculous.
6Fear Before
The Always Open Mouth

Hagstrom must make the world's most dense guitars, because the tones in
Mouth and Drowning the Old Hag in particular are incredibly dense. Something
about the cleans gets me too.
7Russian Circles
Station

Even though the distortion isn't really all that "heavy", the breakdown in Harper
Lewis is awesome, and the tone in the subsequent tapping section is sexy as
hell.
8Converge
Jane Doe

Really all of their albums have ridiculous guitar tones. Even though You Fail Me
and No Heroes are my least favorites, songs like Eagles Become Vultures and No
Heroes have ridiculously dense tones.
9Coheed and Cambria
In Keeping Secrets of Silent Earth: 3

This album was what inspired me to actually try to sound great as well as play
great. Other albums not listed include Circle Takes the Square - As The Roots
Undo (mainly for the otherworldly intro to Non Objective Portrait of Karma),
Between the Buried and Me - The Silent Circus (clean tone in the Mordecai solo
slays me), and Mastodon - Leviathan.
10Periphery
Periphery

Over tweaked, squashed out, digitized BS like this makes me angry. This trend
needs to die out.
