List is top 10 brews as 10.23.09 | 1 | Selins Grove The Phoenix Kriek
A sour ale that will melt your face off both with it's real-life cherry pie aroma and flavor. The palate is extremely well balanced with notes of cherry, bread, sugar, fruit, and more. 4.9/5.0 | 2 | Lost Abbey Serpents Stout
This imperial stout measures in at 11% abv, nearly three times the amount of the average macro light beer. The best part is, you can't taste a single drop of alcohol. The beer pours a dark coca-cola body with small brown head and great lacing. The aroma is extremely unique - some subdued coffee roast, chocolate malts, and something else that I can?t quite describe. The flavor is incredibly smooth, esp considering the 11% abv. Medium to full mouthfeel, with notes of coffee and chocolate. One of the best stouts I've personally ever had. 4.8/5.0 | 3 | Southern Tier Mokah
Oh Southern Tier. Another fine example of why America is the world's leader in the craft brewing industry. Part of its infamous 'Black Water' series, the Mokah pours a jet black body. Aroma is delicious chocolate, coffee, chocolate milk, and "mokah." Taste is extremely delicious - sweet chocolate, light coffee roast, and of course the alcohol is well hidden. 4.8/5.0 | 4 | Unibroue Edition 2005
A retired Belgian Strong Ale, Edition 2005 pours a dark, dark brown body with no head. The aroma is surprising for a beer with this body - mostly cherry and other fruit. The taste is great - very smooth, the consistent spritzer carbonation that is unique to Unibroue, and the disguise of the plus 10% alcohol is impressive. 4.8/5.0 | 5 | Lost Abbey The Angels Share
One of the greatest Barley Wines in the world. The Angel Share pours a dark, dark ice tea body with lots of sediment. The aroma is way more chocolatey than I have ever experienced in a Barley Wine, also notes of raisin, malt, vanilla and honey. The flavor is incredibly smooth, and the alcohol is completely hidden. The mouthfeel is excellent with notes of honey, roast, chocolate, and vanilla in the taste. Smooth finish as well. 4.7/5.0 | 6 | Jolly Pumpkin Calabaza Blanca
Another great American brewery, Jolly Pumpkin should not be mistakenly associated with actual pumpkin beers. JP has a habit of churning out sour ales and belgian strongs with a tartness stemming from their wort which is unlike anything else in the world of sour ales. The Calabaza Blanca is JP's take on the Belgian Witbier (white) style and they do more than just deliver. Calabaza Blanca pours a beautifully light, cloudy orange with little white head. The aroma is restrained tart, citrus, and lemon. The taste is light overall - orange, citrus, coriander, tart, and wheat. Would make for an excellent session beer. 4.6/5.0 | 7 | Southern Tier Choklat
Another "Black Water" brew from Souther Tier, only this time the central focus is chocolate. Real bittersweet belgian chocolate. This imperial stout smells like chocolate syrup, literally. Pours a body like coca cola - pitch black, no head. Taste is syrupy, chocolate milkshake, with just a tad of roastiness in the finish. You could literally pour this over vanilla ice cream. Has to be one of the world's greatest desert brews. 4.6/5.0 | 8 | Schneider Aventinus
This Weizon Bock boasts an aroma of wheat and clove. The taste is wheat, clove - almost like a witbier - with balls. There are just slight notes of alcohol towards the end of the bottle, but for the most part it hides it well. Great strong wheat beer. 4.6/5.0 | 9 | Fantome Saison
The Fantome is a saison (no anthony green is not involved) - which is a beer characterized by its fruity esters which dominate the aroma, a complex fruity/spicy/citrusy flavor, and its light to medium body feel and medium alcohol range. The Fantome pours a dark cloudy orange with a thick white head. Aroma is complex - sweet notes, tartness, and coriander interweaving. Taste is great - the most citrus and orange I?ve ever tasted in a single beer, and done in a good way. 4.6/5.0 | 10 | Lost Abbey 10 Commandments
The 10 Commandments is the first of two beers that tie for 10th spot. This belgian strong ale pours a dark, murky brown with a small brown head. Aroma is sweet fruit, raisins, and malt. The flavor starts as a belgian ale, and ends with a roasty flavor accompanied by notes of raisins, clove, and vanilla. An amazingly complex and unique brew. 4.5/5.0 | 11 | Southern Tier Creme Brulee Stout
A third beer from Southern Ties Black Water series, although Creme Brulee may be the most over the top. Aroma is incredible - vanilla, sugar, creme brulee. The taste starts off sweet, finishes with a mildly bitter, roasty flavor which is a great contrast. A warming mouthfeel due to the 10%, but not a trace of it in the flavor. Another stellar stout from an exceptional brewery. 4.5/5.0 | |
