Youth Lagoon on the other hand probably deserves a spot here but I tried to shy away from Chillwave (save Wild Nothing) as it is still a newer sound. Though truthfully I see it as an extension of Dream Pop so, yeah, oops. |

03.03.12 | Riff Youth Lagoon for all they do that moves them well beyond the label of "chillwave" when Trevor first started to leak tracks his music fell right into line with an airier form of MemoryHouse/Washed Out. One of the many reasons Year Of Hibernation was so excellent was because of how Powers matured and furthermore how he kind of evolved "chillwave" into something more. Even if he was never intending to.

and as far as the different between Shoegaze & D Pop.
Dream Pop - airy melodies with poppier song-structure (Cocteau/Slow Dive)
Shoegaze - same airiness but the guitars are rougher, more punk influenced. (Jesus & Mary Chain/MBV)
they are for all intents and purposes interchangeable, mini-sub genres within a sub genre are kind of there just for the sake of differentiation. |
