DinosaurJones' Rec Contest Round 7!

This was meant to be the last round, but since I kinda flubbed up, I'll add an extra round. We have 4 remaining competitors (Sorry, SCREAM!) I'll dial it back for this one... This round, I want TWO songs from your favorite 2017 release! I've been kind of slacking on new music, and I'm really bad at checking out new things, part of why I started this in the first lace, and I've heard lots of cool stuff. So here we go, 2 songs from your favorite 2017 release. They have to be same artist, same album, and I will rate them separately and dole out the average of the 2 songs.

I mean, obviously. I'm an unabashed fanboy.

A Private Understanding
Male Plague

The drumming in A Private Understanding is pretty great, and the entire song has an almost discordant, uneasy feeling. However, one thing I've noticed in my (admittedly, very limited) experience with Post-punk is a lot of repetition. Like, more so than in other genres... but the ending of the song is pretty great, I must say. Male Plague, on the other hand, is a song that seems to be much more my speed. Despite my more pronounced enjoyment of this track, the repetition is again getting to me. I'm unsure of why it irks me so much more in post-punk than in other genres, must just be a personal thing, and my pleb taste!

3.6/5 + 4.1/5 / 2 = 3.85/5 ***ELIMINATED***
3Cradle of Filth
Cryptoriana – The Seductiveness of Decay

TheSpirit

Western Vespertine
Death And The Maiden

All the recs this round are not only things I've never heard, but also in genres I don't usually dabble in. That said, I'm at least aware of the existence of all of them. Despite not being huge into this style, the musicianship shown here is pretty damn incredible, and Dani Filth honestly sounds pretty versatile in the vocal department. The drummer is on point as well. The solo in Western Vespertine also gives the song an almost optimistic vibe, even if for a short moment, that is welcomed from the oppressive feel of the rest of the track. Death and the Maiden, meanwhile, has a very grandiose feel to it (trying to avoid using the word "epic" here. Almost to the point of feeling a bit overblown, though that just might be my inexperience with the genre? It all seemed to blend together.

3.9/5 + 3.9/5 = 3.9/5 ***ELIMINATED***

16 Psyche
The Culling

I think haunting is a very good way to describe both of these tracks, honestly. The distant, reverb-laden vocals add an almost ethereal quality to both tracks, and if I would have to guess, this extends to the rest of the album? 16 Psyche is a good track, but I found the slow burn of the Culling to be extremely satisfying. The payoff was phenomenal. Definitely will need to check more of this.

4.0/5 + 4.4/5 = 4.2/5

Drifter

Passionfruit
Since Way Back

Passionfruit is smooth af, though I could do without that intro. But for real, this is a real nice, chill track, and one that I could definitely see myself going back to. I much prefer this R&B flavor. Since Way Back features even more of that smooth, laid-back vibe that I am increasingly becoming a fan of. If the entire album sounds like this, I may have to delve into it, and this is a pretty big surprise for me. So, well done, I guess!

4.1/5 + 4.0/5 = 4.05/5
