DinosaurJones' Rec Contest ROUND IV!!!!

And then there were 11... This round the BOTTOM THREE will be eliminated to make it a nice even 8 for round 5. This rounds genre restriction is... POP. It doesn't have to be straight-up pop, but as long as pop is in the tags, I will accept it. Indie-Pop, Pop-Rock, Baroque-Pop, it's all fair game. Gimme that POP!

Emotion

Anyone reccing anything thing from this would automatically pass, so this album is DQ'd immediately. I've also heard Lorde and Justin Timberlake (the standard Sput pop favorites), but these are all straight pop. Show me what you've got!

Knew Better/Forever Boy - I remember trying to get into this album, and not making it far, but I didn't get to this song, so let's see how it goes. I have to say, I really like this track a lot, she has a very good voice, and this is a sexy track, which is probably the point of this album in general. I definitely like the "Forever Boy" portion more. I could definitely see myself jamming this again.

Fast As You Can - This is an interesting song, a lot more jaggy, and a lot of transitions. I'm really enjoying the piano, and a lot of the different styles that are coming out are unexpected, giving a pretty cool sense of anticipation to the song. I also really like her voice, and given that this the second song of hers that I really dug, I think I"ll have to check out more of her work.

SCREAM!

Poltergeist - Oooo, I like this a lot. It feels almost minimalist, though I don't think that's the right word. Simple would probably be a better choice, and the electronic vibe really lends itself to the darker feel of the song. And listening to the lyrics, I'm really enjoying those too...

"Blame me for your false indicators
You're mistaking all my mistakes for my crooked nature"

Heartsigh - Damn, this round is gonna be tough, my enjoyment of everything so far has been really up there. This has an almost euphoric feel to it, though with a sense of wistfulness. Another more electronic track, which is what I tend to lean towards more in my pop, I'm discovering. It does the stereotypical build, but I'm pleasantly surprised that it didn't go into an unwieldy EDM bass drop. What a pleasant song!

New Mistakes - Ah, here we go, more pop-rock/power-pop rec, which is somewhat refreshing after all the beats and crooning in the last few tracks. I'm a sucker for the piano in this track, as simple as it is. And of course the trumpet flourishes in the background, and the bells, pianos and... castanets?... whoa, there's a lot going on here, haha. And despite the surface simplicity, that was a surprisingly dense song with a LOT of elements, and I really dug it. I'll be coming back to this one for sure!

Deep Cuts

Dewinged

Heartbeats - Mmm, I'm immediately grooving to this one. And then.. steel drums? Haha, why do I love these out of nowhere little flourishes so much? Despite all that, it's a pretty standard track, not that there's anything wrong with that. After the last track, this more straightforward approach is kind of appreciated!

Deli - I dig this quite a bit too. It sounds like something that would have been in one of the old EA games like Burnout or SSX... you know, back when EA was good? It'd be one of those sleeper tracks where your jamming out to Thrice or grooving to Royksopp, and this comes on and you go "Ooo, what is this?" And it's like a pleasant surprise that you have to go and delve into more of.

Distant Past - This has a nice groove, and something I love most in pop is when a song has a nice groove. This is a pretty simple track, but I find myself really enjoying it. The singer's use of falsetto vocalizing seems like it should maybe be a little irritating, but it actually fits super well! Ooo, and that bridge is super nice too. What a stellar track!

O My Soul - What a selection of groovy tracks everyone has pulled. This has much more of a distinct "Classic" feel to it, This is definitely much more strait-forward and pop-rocky than everything else on the list. And while I can appreciate the talent involved and understand that it's a good song, to me, it's just... good. Pleasant background noise, but I wouldn't find myself seeking it out.
