| Masochist vs. Popular Opinion
For some bands, your favorite album is EVERYONE'S favorite album--not too many people will argue with you if you say that 'The Shape of Punk To Come' is your favorite Refused album. But then you've got those other bands where your favorite album is no where near the popular opinion. This is for those bands. | 1 | | Brand New Daisy
Most people would say 'The Devil and God...', or maybe 'Deja Entendu'...but 'Daisy' is where I stopped being a fan of songs and became a fan of the band. | 2 | | Dream Theater Octavarium
'Metropolis, Pt. II', 'Awake' or 'Images and Words' are the three albums I see sited as favorites the most, and I own all of those and three other LPs by the band, but this is without a single doubt my favorite Dream Theater record. | 3 | | Jane's Addiction The Great Escape Artist
This band has put out one LP per decade so far. The first two are undeniable alt-rock classics, the third has a slew of hits, and the fourth one is completely forgotten...so of course, it's the fourth one that is my favorite. | 4 | | Jimmy Eat World Futures
Most people would call 'Clarity' or 'Bleed American' (S/T) their favorite, but I didn't even know that 'The Middle' was a Jimmy Eat World song until after I explored this album. This one can still take me back, and '23' is one of the best closers ever. | 5 | | Nine Inch Nails With Teeth
Blasphemous, right? I know...but I can't deny that 'With Teeth' is my favorite NIN record. It's very nostalgic for me, as it reminds me of my freshman year of college. I got into the band because of this album, and the video to 'Only' is one of my absolute favorites. | 6 | | Norma Jean Meridional
Norma Jean is a harder band to gauge which album is the most popular, but I'm pretty sure this one probably isn't even in the top 3. 'O, God' and 'Bless the Martyr,' at least, are ahead of it, wouldn't you say? Either way, this one's tops in my book. | 7 | | Red Hot Chili Peppers By the Way
Everything I was about in High School is encapsulated in this album. This was the first album that was released after I'd discovered this band's music, and so it was the one I listened to the most. It's over an hour long, but I could probably still sing every word of every song. Keep 'Californication', keep 'Blood Sugar Sex Magic'...I'll take 'By The Way'. | 8 | | System of a Down Mezmerize
On my very first list ever on Sputnikmusic (back in 2007!), I called this my favorite album of all time. Obviously my music taste has changed so drastically since then that this album probably would struggle to make the top 50 or 100, but as far as SOAD albums go, this is still my favorite. Not that it's not close--'Toxicity' is still a ballin' record, as is 'Steal This Album'--but there's memory and emotion behind this one, as it was released right as I graduated high school, and System of a Down ended up being my very first concert during that summer. So yeah...gotta stick with this one. | |

07.23.16 | I'm with you on 4. I used to listen to it just for Pain and now I listen to it more than their others. As for Brand New, most people wouldn't say Your Favorte Weapon. Idk about the rest of the artists on your list. Some stuff I like that I wish got more love: Keep You - Pianos Become the Teeth, Life is Not a Waiting Room - Senses Fail, Lead Sails, Paper Anchor - Atreyu, s/t/Roman Candle - Elliott Smith. | Intothepit
07.23.16 | Damn Mas how ya been dude? | Masochist

07.23.16 | "I've actually never listened to 'Static Prevails' or 'Clarity', which is strange."

Opeth - My Arms, Your Hearse
Darkthrone - Under A Funeral Moon for their BM & The Underground Resistance

07.23.16 | "what is even stranger is that you can still declare futures their best album when you haven't even heard their most acclaimed one"
Didn't call it their best, called it my favorite. Huge difference. | Artuma
07.23.16 | fine but you still can't really call it fighting against the popular opinion when you don't even have an opinion on the 'everyone's favorite' album | YoYoMancuso
07.23.16 | Futures is def the best JEW nice | SgtShock
07.23.16 | All We Love > Jane Doe | Masochist
07.23.16 | Artuma - The most popular Jimmy Eat World album is 'Bleed American', isn't it? Besides, I don't think having an opinion on the most popular of a band's albums is required when stating that my favorite is not that/those album(s), so long as I have the knowledge of it. | Futures
07.23.16 | nah it's clarity | Snake.
07.23.16 | tbf he said popular not best | Futures
07.23.16 | i'm assuming he meant most popular on this site | torts
07.23.16 | I'm assuming he meant #%+(:"*$!?(-:' | Snake.
07.23.16 | most popular on this site would prob be futures | Futures
07.23.16 | no way clarity for sure | Snake.
07.23.16 | did the math and added up all the 4+ ratings for each individual album:
1. bleed american: 991
2. futures: 813
3. clarity: 765
4. chase this light: 171
5. static prevails: 152
6. invented: 126
7. damage: 51
8. self-titled: 8
ofc this is dating back to this site's inception and not from a specific date so | Masochist
07.23.16 | I kinda meant in general, not specifically to this site. If it was specific to the site, I wouldn't've included bands like Jane's Addiction, which aren't all that big here compared to, say, Opeth (and it's 'Ghost Reveries' for me, by the way).
For the most part the opinions are going to be the same regardless of whether you look at this site or beyond, especially for bands like these. | Artuma
07.23.16 | bleed american and futures might be more well-known when it comes to the large audience but clarity is a cult classic and i think it has a way bigger dedicated fanbase than any of their other albums |
