06.09.08 | Have to split this comment into two, so here are the "S" bands:
SAOSIN - "Saosin" (Alternative)
Good group, very cool sound. Lead singer is the same one for Circa Survive on this album.
SECRET AND WHISPER - "Great White Whale" (Alternative)
Similar in some ways to Saosin except a little harder; band is the remnants of Stutterfly, only with a different singer.
SILENT CIVILIAN - "Rebirth of the Temple" (Metal/Metalcore)
Great band, very cohesive metalcore group. If you've ever heard Spineshank, this is their next level (thanks to the frontman).
SIMON & GARFUNKEL - "Bookends" or "Bridge Over Troubled Water" (Pre-Rock)
These guys WERE rock music back in the day. "Bridge Over..." is considered a timeless classic, but I've never heard it. I have "Bookends," and that's AMAZING! Perhaps you've heard either 'Mrs. Robinson' or 'A Hazy Shade of Winter' (or one of their many covers)....
SMASHING PUMPKINS - "Mellon Collie..." or "Siamese Dream" (Grunge/Post Grunge/Rock)
I shouldn't have to explain these guys, really. Classic band.
STARFLYER 59 - Pick An Album (Alternative)
This band is one of the very best on Tooth and Nail records...and also one of the least known. They deviate a bit through each era of their c.d.'s (sometimes a bit more keyboard, sometimes more guitar), but they have a really good sound throughout.
STONE TEMPLE PILOTS - "Thank You" (Grunge/Post Grunge/Rock)
Same as Smashing Pumpkins. "Thank You" is one of the best Greatest Hits albums I've heard; great compilation of awesome songs.
STUTTERFLY - "Broken In Pieces" or "And We Are Bled Of Color" (Rock/Post Hardcore)
Good band, but people tend to hate on them. The former album is heavier; the latter is more accessible. "Gun In Hand" is probably their most well-known song, but it's not one to judge the sound of the band by. |
Masochist
06.09.08 | The "T" bands:
TEAM SLEEP - "Team Sleep" (Post Nu-Metal, HA!)
Chino from Deftones' second, softer, more chilled band. Has the inevitable Deftones vibe, but not as dark or harsh as that band. Good music to study by.
THE FALL OF TROY - "Doppleganger" (Tech...Rock? Metal? -Core?)
These guys are characterized by their unconventional time-sigs and sporadic tempo changes. They're all competent on their instruments, and play very fast while still retaining the melody. If you've played GHIII, then you've probably heard their song 'F.C.P.R.E.M.I.X.'
THRICE - Pick An Album (Post Hardcore)
Really, you'd do yourself a favor by getting into these guys if you're not already. The earlier years of their discography points to straight-up Post-core; the latter sees them expanding their sound dramatically. Great band.
TOM WAITS - "Rain Dogs" or any other album (Folk)
Hopefully this recommendation will be useless to you. If you want to be as cool as Scarlett Johansen (whose name I can't spell), you'll listen to Tom Waits. Hell...if you want to be cool AT ALL, you'll listen to Tom Waits. Right now. Stop reading; if you have any of his albums, pop it in; if not, head out to Best Buy and grab one or five.
By the way, I second:
