| When I need catharsis...
...I turn to songs and works such as these. Be they short or long, these are what help me express difficult emotions in a healthy way or help me cope with stress. | 1 | | yndi halda illuminate my heart, my darling!
One of the most astoundingly beautiful pieces of music written in the last few years, and one of the only times I've ever headbanged to violin lines, and one of the few songs that I've ever cried during. Multiple times, in fact, during the course of the 17-minute track. The greatest idea any musician has ever had was this - "let's have the violin and clarinet trade off lines here, yeah, that'd sound real pretty." Fact. | 2 | | Sonic Youth Rain King
Because sometimes, what I really need to help me manage a terrible day is to rock the hell out and throw my whole body around while listening to noisy, over-distorted guitar playing. | 3 | | Godspeed You! Black Emperor Sleep
It runs through such a variety of emotions, moving from sad to slightly manic to nervous and finally to downright lovely. Once the twenty minutes of song are up and my arms are tired from mad sessions of air guitar and drumming, I feel much better about myself. | 4 | | Radiohead How to Disappear Completely
Radiohead's finest track, a struggle between opposing forces - consonances, dissonances and hemiolas - rounded out with some phenomenal string arranging which builds into an exceptional event comprised solely of tension and release. | 5 | | The Red Paintings Walls
The track is all over the place in all of its Art Rock glory and utter brevity, but really hits all the right notes to connect with a beleaguered and exhausted me, and I can connect to the emotions in the song. | 6 | | Thom Yorke Atoms For Peace
Everything about the track is relaxed, calming, and meditative. The mantric notes in fifths and fourths of the primary riff, Thom's hypnotic falsetto, and the shimmering synth lines are utterly pleasant and soothing. | 7 | | Dave Matthews Band Halloween>The Stone
"Halloween" I've come to accept as existing but to make "The Stone" more powerful. Whenever I'm in a funk, the incredible depressing power of the two tracks sinks in, only to lift me out with the simply arranged, shimmering ending. | 8 | | Coldplay Warning Sign
Say what you will, this is a deeply pretty song. It's melody and Chris' delivery of said melody are touching, and the stark piano chords that end it are simple and effective. | |

10.29.06 | Awesome list. Warning Sign is terribly underrated. I absolutely love that song. Nothing Coldplay has ever done or ever will could amount to the emotion put into that song. I probably going to go listen to that album now, and maybe even enjoy it. | FlawedPerfection

But uber-yes to 3 and 4 | iarescientists
