A Dose Of Essential Metal (and Some Of My Favourites)

Over the past few months on Sputnik, I have recently been criticized for my irrational negativity and dislike for some of the genres worst, yet most praised, jizz spanking albums that only a website metal community could hype up. It had me thinking that I should write up a list of my favourite albums, but that would be too predictable (unlike my negativity towards specific albums that I won?t mention). I came up with another idea of just doing an essential metal list, which has also been done to death in the past. This list, however, is far from predictable. Enjoy and keep the hype down please.
1Godflesh
Hymns

Purified industrial metal that was Justin K. Broadricks final album with his band before creating the ultra wishy, washy post-whatever lovings of Jesu.
2Today is the Day
Willpower

Part Converge style metalcore, part progressive metal, Willpower is arguably one of the finest examples of off the wall metal complete with strange rhythm patterns, awkward guitar harmonies, and crooning vocals.
3Cult of Luna
Salvation

So you love post metal and haven?t heard this album? Get the fuck out.
4Johnny Truant
In the Library of Horrific Events

Metalcore that doesn?t suck. These Brits challenge the listener with unusual, yet tasteful, breakdowns and dissonant melodies interwoven through talented guitar play.
5Unearthly Trance
Electrocution

Neurosis and The Swans duking it out in a backdoor alleyway.
6Oceansize
Effloresce

Not so much heavy on the distortion as it is on the progressive song structures that incorporate a heavy dose of wonderful melodies and some mind numbing alternative rock. Porcupine Tree, sit the fuck down.
7Burst
Conquest:Writhe

While all of you jizz over Lazarus Bird, please don?t forget Bursts humble beginnings as one of the best metalcore bands ever.
8Brutal Truth
Sounds of the Animal Kingdom

One of the most influential grindcore bands of all time and quite possibly, one of the best examples of how grind is to be done. Even with a little variety?
9Napalm Death
Fear Emptiness Despair

If you do not own this album, you are not a fan of death metal or grind. First band to do the whole death metal/ grind amalgamation and make it actually sound great.
10Candiria
300 Percent Density

What the hell am I doing putting rap metal on this list? Must be all the dope I?ve been smoking recently. Or it could be the fact that Candirias jazzy musicianship coupled with off-time rhythms, hardcore breakdowns, and lyrical flow fitting so tightly together that it would shock most of you who think rap metal was a dead genre. Think again?
