06.27.22 | Yeah, definitely flawed. But honestly any political "quiz" that included the full level of nuance and analysis necessary to capture the entire picture would be impossibly complex and take days and thousands of questions to complete lol. Tests like these often reduce multifaceted issues into binary accept/reject impositions, which is obviously very reductive. All that said, my alignment was still relatively on-par with how I'd have self-identified. I thought I'd be more progressive on the social axis, honestly, and maybe *slightly* farther into the Libertarian side, but all in all it's a fair representation I suppose. |

If you truly feel it should be more Auth-Left, I can change it. But the classifications above are based solely on the test as written - your personal feeling and self-identification can (and in many cases will) obviously be different. |

(Social progressivism is considered separately.) I've arbitrarily deemed ±2.0 as the cut-off for centrism on a specific axis. No real justification for that number other than it "appears" right via the eyeball test. |

More realistically/specifically, your alignment there would probably be something like Social Democracy, or perhaps "Democratic Socialsm" if you erred more on the authoritarian side. don't disagree, though with modernist context taken into account, it is "generally" understood what is meant by either term and how they're at least perceived to be different. but you're not wrong.
"not rly what i expected, but close enough. went neutral on q a few leading questions pushing false dichotomies"
this is really the biggest issue, aside from lack of overall resolution. there are definitely several questions that are loaded and seem to be implying that there's a morally "correct" answer. but of the many political quizzes I've taken, this one is the *least* lopsided with the most reasonable amount of questions. there are a couple better ones, but they have 200+ questions with much more nuance to the answers, and I was pretty much sure no one here would've bothered if presented with that many questions lol. |

06.27.22 | The thing that bothers me about the communism question is, it's something like "Communism is an ideal that could never work in practice." There are two points of contention there: 1. Is Communism ideal? 2. Would Communism ever work in practice?
I voted Yes, in the sense that it is a utopic wet dream that could never be implemented effectively, not with fucking humans anyway. But one could interpret the question as "No, I do not even think it's an 'ideal' economic system on paper" and would answer No/Disagree here. But then that might imply they're saying "no" to the "It could never work in practice" part.
I'm fairly certain the second part of the question (whether it could ever "work") is the main point, but the question is definitely poorly worded. |
budgie
06.27.22 | i voted neutral on that i think, was assuming theyre going with "state communism" aka stalinist type command economies + fully nationalized industries. if it's the idealistic stateless communism, i mean that sounds just awful |
tectactoe
06.27.22 | See, I automatically assumed the latter. (Since elsewhere I think they tend to delineate the state if the question would necessitate the clarity.) Another obvious pitfall of these types of simplified questions.
Again, this quiz was chosen mainly for its combination of (1) low number of questions and (2) "relatively" unbiased stance. But here are two others that I've found to be quite nice:
https://politicaltests.github.io/12axes/instructions.html
https://www.isidewith.com/
The first one doesn't use a compass but rather measures 12 different political spectrums and makes a judgment based on those. There are two versions - one with 60 questions and one with 288 questions. The one with more questions is obviously more comprehensive, and i noticed it contains some similar questions, but worded slightly differently, or to various levels of specificity, which I think helps a bit with consistency to some extent.
The latter is more specifically US-based, so apologies to my global friends (of which there are many). But it has the benefit of being more contemporaneous and specific than the others, plus the questions have a wider range of potential answers and caveats. |

@Drifter - there are three axes that range from +10 to -10. The first two describe economic leaning (right or left wing) and authority leaning (authoritarian or libertarian). Those two are the x and y axes and are visualized by the dot on the chart, and described by a simple title. You would be Auth-Right for example based on -7.33 and 3. The third axis is social, either progressive or conservative. That is hard to visualize in 2d, it would essentially be the z-axis. So that’s the one we just describe with a number. You’d be 8.44, which is heavily socially progressive. (0 is an even split and negative numbers would be more conservative.) |

06.28.22 | "mua ha ha but tell progressives in north america that you shouldnt be able to wear burkas in public schools and they will call you a nazi"
It, like everything political, is a tricky, nuanced, and highly interpretive issue. My personal stance is that students should be able to exhibit freedom of religious expression as they deem fit, so long as it does not distract or disrupt other students. Wearing a burka in this case would be fine.
For teachers, the public institution's leaders and authority figures, it's a thornier situation. Given that they represent the institution in part, they cannot be allowed to endorse a religion to the extent that it could be seen as proselytizing. Similar to the rule for students, it can also not be distracting, disruptive, or obtrusive to learning. In the precise case of a burka, I would say the clothing is both obtrusive and distracting and should not be allowed. Hijabs and shaylas are a different story. They're not covering the face, the mouth, the eyes. They would surely engender inquiries from younger students, but would not be impeding or counterproductive to the extent that full facial coverings would. Looking at it another way, I'd have no issue with a teacher wearing, say, a necklace with a cross, or the star of David. But those emblems on the *walls* of a classroom are a different story. And should the teacher come in wearing a shirt that says something like "Jesus Is Lord" or whatever, yeah that is problematic because it could be construed more as endorsement, however slight, rather than simple and unobtrusive personal expression.
Just my personal thoughts, though. I know it's a touchy subject and there's never a "right" answer. |

06.28.22 | @someone: see my message one above yours. Your auth leaning is only +1 from the central axis, which is within my ±2.0 range to be considered "centrist" for a specific axis. It merely indicates that while you have a few more authoritarian leanings (v. libertarian), you still represent more of a stable balance between the two that a true leaning toward one side. Again, that range (±2) is largely arbitrary and based only on my own scaffolding logic that more than a 20% lean should be needed to "pick" a side, so to speak. |

Yeah, unsurprisingly minimally lib-centrist. These things are fun for a kinda shallow birds eye glance at things. |

06.29.22 | Most people fail to realize that typical US Democratic politicians would end up in the auth-right sector. Republicans would obviously be farther up/right, but anyone who thinks a majority of Democratic representatives aren't authoritarian and capitalist to some extent are fooling themselves. The ones who are truly more socialist (e.g. AOC, Sanders) are obviously very vocal but wouldn't stand a chance in running for presidency (as we saw with Sanders). |

06.29.22 | i mean, capitalism is a horribly flawed standalone system that prioritizes the few over the many in and of itself, but then to give all the cards within that system to a handful of major corporations, whose only concern is to maximize profits and puppeteer politicians... what good can come? human greed is boundless and all-consuming. democrats and republicans are two sides of the same shitty, crony-capitalist coin |

other compasses have put me closer to the bottom left corner than this one. I found I was hitting neutral/unsure way too often, dunno if that was just where questions were too vague or if i just need a coffee |

07.27.22 | Finally another Lib-Right, nice.
'dunno if that was just where questions were too vague or if i just need a coffee'
Perhaps both. Questions on almost all these sorts of tests are way too vague and/or open to individual interpretation.
Even something as simple as "Gender is a social construct" can mean different things to different people. Are we talking about gender identity? Or gender roles? Because that drastically changes my answer, etc. |

08.04.22 | @gschwen: Social progressiveness / conservativism is independent of the economically left/right and authoritarian/libertarian axes. (Obviously some of the views therein are more characteristic of either social progressives / conservatives, but they are measured separately here.) It's the bar on the right side next to the graph; yours is +5, which is well on the progressive side.
If this graph was a cube instead of a square, it'd be the z-axis. |

I've put you in Econ-Right (i.e., "centrist" on the auth/libertarian axis) because at the start of this I arbitrarily decided to define any axis bias of ±2 would be the cut-off for centrism (20% of the full-scale, which goes ±10 in each direction). |
