10.27.20 | Although the game caught some flack, I thought pokemon shield was a fun play through. |
tectactoe
10.27.20 | Fuck the haters, Pokemon are great RPG games. Haven't played one myself since Emerald (briefly played an emulator of Black 2 and White 2 but got too distracted before I got very far) many years ago, but not because I have an issue with being a grown-ass man playing Pokemon. I just haven't had much time to dedicate to RPGs. |
Feather
10.27.20 | Gen 2 will always be my favorite, but I gave Y and Sun a run through a couple years back and had fun with them all. The only game I didnt enjoy was White, so I am not surprised you dropped off on white 2.
Shield was good, not great, but enjoyable. |
Colton
10.27.20 | I don't think anyone gives people shit anymore for being an adult and playing Pokemon. Stuff like that is so normalized now, there's probably more adult Pokemon players than kids. But the new games really weren't great. The core gameplay is fun sure, but the route design, graphics, and combat felt so underwhelming. You can basically beat the whole game by just mashing the A button in every battle. And then there were tons of Pokemon they cut out of the game, just to add them back in as DLC later. the whole thing just feels super lazy and could have easily been a 3DS game. |
Feather
10.27.20 | Just realized your avitar is sudowoodo lol |
Colton
10.27.20 | oh I just saw you said you haven't played one since Emerald tectactoe. imagine Emerald but on a home console and that's basically Sword and Shield. virtually no upgrades at all, even the graphics in Emerald look better to me. and of course it costs way more than gameboy games ever did
I hate on Sword and Shield a lot because they could easily make a much, much better game with a tiny bit of effort |
Skoj
10.27.20 | Risk of Rain 2. It is fucking excellent, scales difficulty incredibly well, and is most importantly - FUN. Like, stupid fun. Online, solo, whatever; fun as fuck. |
tectactoe
10.27.20 | I have a special nostalgia for both Gen 1 and Gen 2. I remember getting both Red and Blue for Christmas the year they came out and being so totally absorbed by it. It was crazy how it took kids by storm, too. Almost all the kids (well, boys at least) in my grade school played it, to the point where my school banned all Pokemon paraphernalia because it was becoming such a distraction lol. I spent so much time collecting all 150 the legit way and it was so damn rewarding as a sixth grader haha. Same with Gold/Silver - the obsession was a little died down, but those games expanded on the first two in all the right ways.
Emerald was a really great game as far as balancing the amount of content without being too overwhelming and jammed with a ton of unnecessary and annoying features. Emerald was the only game where I toyed with EV Training. |
tectactoe
10.27.20 | @Colt - well shit, that's disappointing. Though it's been so long since I've played Emerald that maybe I could cash in on the nostalgia factor, at least....
@Feather - haha yeah, I still remember taking way too damn long to figure out how to get Sudo out of the way in G/S when I was a kid lol. |
Colton
10.27.20 | I agree, those early games were awesome. Such great memories of playing them at school, trading pokemon, getting yelled at by my mom to stop playing but saying I can't because I'm in the middle of a battle and you can't save during a battle. Good times. The issue is that the newer games are virtually identical to those games, except they cost twice as much as those games did. They're just so lazy with the new ones, it's almost like that new Fifa game that literally reuses the same exact gameplay as the last one |
tectactoe
10.27.20 | Yeah, that's a shame. Minimal manhours required for upgrading, plus a higher premium means $$$$$, which is unfortunately the biggest driver for so many developers nowadays, even some of the bigger ones.
Nintendo did the same thing when they released Animal Crossing City Folk for the Wii. It was almost an exact copy of Wild World (DS) except with better graphics and a few gameplay mechanic changes and additions. Not at all worth another $60. Such a disappointment.
Luckily New Horizons has been great so far - lots of upgrades compared to CF/WW. And it seems like Nintendo is rolling out updates every month or so, which is neat. One of my gripes with Nintendo in the past was their reluctance to utilize the internet properly, whether it be online interactions or continuous improvement of their games. In that respect they always seem a step or two behind Sony/MS, but from what I can tell so far with the Switch, they've finally come around to it. |
Cygnatti
10.27.20 | new pokemon games were shit
only had fun raiding wit the homies, the gyms were to easy to be all that fun, it was legit a bad fuckin game smh no fuckin effort in them |
Colton
10.27.20 | I honestly don't get anything out of AC, but I'm glad people are liking it. To me it's just a game where you decorate stuff and wait around for time to pass |
Colton
10.27.20 | yeah cyg it couldn't have been that hard for them to just add a harder difficulty option so the combat actually means something |
tectactoe
10.27.20 | To some extent, that's all AC is, really lol. But as a personal with crippling anxiety, I find it very therapeutic when I don't feel like playing something intense or competitive. |
Egarran
10.27.20 | I just think it's adorable that you play AC.
How do you feel about that rhino that looks like Hitler?

10.27.20 | There's still like a couple years left for the new console imo. |

10.28.20 | The Wii U was a failure and that lasted 5 years. Switch has only been out for 3 and it is Nintendo's best selling console. It will be around for a while.
@Eg - have not met this shady fellow yet. My villagers include a standoff-ish horse, a jock penguin, and a cock of some sort.
@Pots - thanks for the list. Was wondering if LM3 was worth it. Enjoyed the original for Gamecube many years ago. I'll probably take the dive on it soon. Did not realize there was a Link's Awakening remake. I'll have to look into that. That might be my favorite Zelda game. Either that or Link to the Past. Played that and Link's Awakening DX for about half of my childhood.
I have only heard about the indie game market on the switch - haven't explored it much. Willing to take any and all recommendations, though. One of my favorite things about Xbox was the XBL Arcade indie games. Some total gems came out of that thing.
Also what sucks about the AC:NH multiplayer? Literally only played for four days so far so I haven't even been to other people's islands yet. |

10.28.20 | one of my favourite games is The Binding of Isaac. it's a roguelike dungeon crawler type thing, heavily inspired by the original NES Zelda. very steep learning curve, but it'll get its hooks in ya. I've easily played 1000+ hours across different versions of the game. normally I don't recommend games on console if they are available on PC, but it runs pretty well on the Switch, and is a great fit for the system. |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
10.28.20 | Yeah LM3 is good fun, if you liked the gamecube one you'll like this one.
I'd also recommend the DS1 remaster if you are into dark souls and havent played the remaster otherwise. If you liked Megaman games growing up Megaman 11 is great too.
Great indies and ports:
Little Nightmares

Enter the Gungeon

Hotline Miami

Dead Cells

10.28.20 | Dude Mega Man X for SNES is probably one of my most played games ever.
When I was a kid I also had a physical copy of Mega Max X3 for SNES, too. No idea where most of my SNES games when between my adolesence and now, though I have a few strays in boxes in my basement lol. Anyway, of course I can't find MMX3 anywhere - probably lost it or gave it away or some shit as a dumb kid, come to find out last year that it's selling for hundreds of dollars on eBay lmao R.I.P. |

10.28.20 | Yeah it was fuckin' slick. Just looked up the trailer for MM11 and it looks dope as hell, definitely going to pick that up eventually.
All you Smash pros - there any resource online for learning to play it more seriously? Was a competitive MK9 and MKX player but have never been really into any other fighting games aside from playing old Smash games (64, melee, Wii U) for fun with friends. With a Switch I'd like to learn how to play it at a higher level, advanced techniques and all that. But honestly dunno where to start. |

10.28.20 | It's relatively cheap for some reason, i got a physical copy for like 30 bucks (canadian) on amazon

Yeah i feel that. Also did the same dumb thing with a bunch of my consoles. Now i would like to play Guardian Heroes on my Sega Saturn but the cheapest one is over 100 bucks. And most places it's like 250.

10.28.20 | "All you Smash pros - there any resource online for learning to play it more seriously?"
I'd say go for neutral. Arguably the most important part of fighting games.
One tip i can say to you is: keep your eyes on the opponent always. Don't look at your own char. |
aydross121
10.28.20 | not a tutorial per se, but this video is somewhat of a guidance into what is the neutral game: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G6YTQt4n6Ro |
aydross121
10.28.20 | because you have some experience in competitive gaming, id say stuff to have in mind/study a bit for smash ult are:
turn-around back-airs
DI
Smash-DI
run-up shields
Out of shield options
for actual videos, this series is pretty good: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ta3L35wsE6o

tectactoe
10.28.20 | Nice, thanks for the tips and vids. Just have to take some time getting used to the fighting mechanics, too. Iām so engrained in MK when it comes to fighting games and Smash is drastically different in many regards, but a lot of the fundamentals are at least similar. The amount of fighters is a little intimidating, too lol. Means there will be a LOT more matchups you have to be prepared for. |
StormChaser
10.28.20 | Breath of the Wild - one of the best games ever, literally with one of the best soundtracks ever, you can spend hundreds of hours playing and not get bored, buy it NOW
Link's Awakening - if you like the art style and gameplay it's really an amazing game, a bit short for an AAA game, recommend getting this one on sale
Smash - all-time classic and you're getting a ton of bang for your buck
Astral Chain - lots of fun with amazing graphics and unique combat system, the main story is a bit shorter than I'd hoped for, I'd pay the full price if you like the whole package or wait for a sale if you're unsure
Starlink: Battle for Atlas - very impressive port, great fun, especially co-op, the main story is quite short tho, so keep an eye out for sidequests, get it on sale (you don't need the physical toy spaceships if you purchase digital)
Ori and the Blind Forest - best port you can get for the Switch, my personal favorite platformer. beautiful visuals and cool story
|

10.28.20 | Looks like Linkās Awakening is $30 at a Walmart near me. Does it include the color dungeon that was added with DX? I assume it would.
Goddamn i love that game |

10.28.20 | "Dude Mega Man X for SNES is probably one of my most played games ever."
If you haven't played it yet, do yourself a favor and pick up Hollow Knight. The included DLC also has some of the hardest fights of any last or current gen titles.
If you prefer platforming over fighting, Celeste and Mario Odyssey are also fantastic options.
Also, unless you got the Switch Lite, the Nintendo Pro Controller is boss, highly recommend. |
tectactoe
10.28.20 | Yeah got a pro controller the day i got the console. The joycons are a neat idea but too small for my hands to use comfortably |
tectactoe
10.29.20 | also: anyone have a problem with their Joycons when playing the Switch docked? when using handheld mode, they are fine. But when playing with them wirelessly, there seems to be a noticeable amount of input lag that affects the controller intermittently and somewhat randomly. like, they'll be working fine, then suddenly my ZR trigger will lag with its input and then "hold" for a second after i let it go.
i think it has to do with weak wireless signal or interference. my switch is next to my TV and a WAP sits between the console and where i typically sit. you'd think this wouldn't be an issue in 2020. |
Deathconscious
10.29.20 | If youre from Europe they have a Final Fantasy 7 and 8 combo thing out for the switch. |
Uzumaki
10.29.20 | I wholeheartedly second whoever recommended Shovel Knight. One of the best (and challenging) platformers to be released within the last decade; you also canāt go wrong with Valkyria Chronicles IV, which is a turn-based strategy JRPG in the vein of Fire Emblem, except VC IV trades in the swords and lances for tanks and guns, and Iād also recommend Octopath Traveler, which is a throwback to the classic Final Fantasy games of yesteryear. |
Davil667
10.29.20 | Many great ones for Switch, if you enjoy platformers here three of my favs:
Giana Sisters: Twisted Dreams
Ori and the Blind Forest
Hollow Knight
|
Slex
10.29.20 | Hades is the best game I've played on the Switch besides BOTW |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
10.29.20 | is the combat better than bastion and transistor? |
Slex
10.29.20 | Way way way better, much more akin to Dead Cells/Hollow Knight |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
10.29.20 | thats what i like to hear. i liked those games from a narrative standpoint - really well done - but the combat was so stiff and unrewarding |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
10.29.20 | like they felt like you were playing a flash game |
Egarran
10.29.20 | I actually finished Bastion. Great game. I got like 10 minutes into Transistor. That didn't hook me at all.
But Hades looks very tempting. |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
10.29.20 | I preferred Transistor, very similar in spirit but I preferred the combat and art style in Transistor |

peekatoad
10.30.20 | it doesn't take too long |
tectactoe
10.30.20 | as a convert from Mortal Kombat, i'm trying to get used to how different of a fighting game Smash is and it's making my brain hurt. i'm also trying to get used to not using "up" to jump and it's killing me right now. but i think once i get used to it, it'll be beneficial in the long run. |
peekatoad
10.30.20 | It should, and yeah smash is hard to wrap your head around sometimes. But i think there's a special area where you can unlock characters faster... i don't remember where though. i haven't played it in months |
Hertzy
10.30.20 | @tectactoe IIRC you unlock a fight with a new character every 10 minutes or so. So if you play versus mode, after 10 minutes, qhen your match ends, you'll get a new character. Same thing if you're in the story mode( World of Light I think?). Just quit the mode after playing for 10 minutes and you'll fight a new character.
Sorry for my poor english. |

11.17.20 | I still can't believe they're charging $60 for Link's Awakening. It'd probably rank highly among my all time favorite games, but it hurts to know that I'm paying full AAA game price for what's essentially a glamorously repainted port. (The reconfiguration of the button system is a plus, too.)
I don't understand why they don't either add content to their highly upgraded ports (Christ I mean they added a whole new dungeon and tunic in the transition from Game Boy to GBC) or charge less. I know, I know - capitalism dur hur and "it's worth whatever people are willing to pay," etc. etc. but for once it'd be nice if Nintendo would stop being self-important cunts and do their fanbase a legitimate solid for fuck's sake. |
nol
11.17.20 | Yeah, Link's Awakening definitely should've been cheaper. 40$ would've been understandable, it felt like a handheld game. |

Ryus
07.08.22 | the demo was fun lol. i kinda want it but i honestly cant justify spending 60 bucks on it when there are so many indie games that i wanna play that would give me 10x the amount of content |

07.08.22 | Metroid Dread is great and in many ways is an improvement on the other mainline games. Atmosphere is intense and boss fights are probably the best in the series. I still would recommend playing through Super Metroid and Metroid Fusion if there is any way you can as they are also very good and will set you up for Dread but as far as Iām concerned, Dread is as good an introduction to the series as anything else. If you like 2D sidescrollers but also like exploration, fluid gameplay, great atmosphere and epic boss fights you will be in for a treat
