08.26.20 | Great List! 1 is 1.
I prefer Heroes to low.... |
Sunnyvale
08.26.20 | Sweet list, 33 and 66 are especially nice to see |
tectactoe
08.26.20 | Finally done updating! (Did it in pieces as to not get trapped by the nasty sputnik big.)
@lou - Fair enough, I love Station to Station, "Heroes", Hunky Dory, Ziggy Stardust, and Blackstar almost as much. All of them would've made this list (possibly even Outside and Lodger) had I allowed more than one album per artist. Bowie is just too good.
@Sunny - Nice! Not many Appleseed Cast fans where I'm from (most people simply haven't heard of 'em), so it's always good to see them getting love. And yes I greatly prefer 'Today' to 'On Fire', a sentiment I used to think was uncommon, but it seems the fanbases are more or less equal these days. |
Pangea
08.26.20 | nice list! lots of great picks |
Icebloom
08.26.20 | I never understood the "one album per artist rule". Why limit yourself that way? There are so many artists who've put out several brilliant albums, and sometimes with a whole different sound.
As for the list: lots of records that I respect, but only two that I love (Trouble Will Find Me and American Football). Very respectable no 1 as well, New Grass is heavenly. |
Demon of the Fall
08.26.20 | Woah, cool list. āHellā looks so out of place, maybe I should check.
Your top 10 (actually 11 - Drive Like Jehu!) is bloody awesome, making me want to check American Football to complete the set (as we discussed I think Deceit will grow on me). |
porcupinetheater
08.26.20 | That top 5 is unimpeachable |
Ryus
08.26.20 | some of these choices got me fucked up but ill appreciate any list with 1 ranked so highly |
tectactoe
08.26.20 | @Pangea - Many thanks!
@Icebloom - It's more of an imposition to add variety and make me think a little harder about my "on the bubble" choices. Gives me more of a chance to highlight albums that would otherwise be ousted at the hands of yet another Bowie or Bjork album.
@Demon - I would recommend that album to anybody, though I wouldn't be surprised to learn that you end up disliking it. Very mellow, very twinkly, very much a 'Midwest Emo' album, but one that more or less defined my high school years and while I still think it is legitimately great, it holds a very nostalgic and sentimental value for me. (In other words, do try it, but don't say I didn't warn you!)
@porc - God bless.
@Ryus - i'd be curious to see which choices perturbed you most heavily, though i could probably guess a few. Glad my Top Spot rebuilds some of my credibility, though. Truly an untouchable album, and one of the few i could consider "perfect" in just about any and every sense of the word. |
Ryus
08.26.20 | 63, 22 and 48 in particular really aren't my jam, and 29 may be my least favorite anco full-length (though still pretty good)
but obv some real classics here too. the smiths and modest mouse are probably my favorite "rock" bands ever |
Icebloom
08.26.20 | Sounds reasonable. Guess I need to listen to more artists first, cause right now I wouldn't even be able to name 50 artists that I really like.
It'd still feel like a betrayal if I had to leave Trouble Will Find Me off my list because I prefer Boxer though... |
PopsicleBob
08.26.20 | this is like the most sputcore list ever |
hel9000
08.26.20 | list is solid as hell. |
tectactoe
08.26.20 | @Ryus - figured 63 would be one of āem. Have long had to defend my love for Brand New but canāt deny that I donāt think theyāre the shams a lot of other people do, but I understand both sides. TD&G has long been slipping in my estimation, though. Wouldāve contended for a Top 20 spot as recently as five years ago, but Science Fiction almost brings that albumās flaws to the foreground.
And nice call on MM/Smiths. Theyād both have at least one (possibly two) more albums on the list without the one-per-artist restriction. As much as Iād enjoy having more esoteric picks from either of them, TLCW and TQID are just too excellent.
@Icebloom - believe me, I know the pain. Boxer, Alligator, and High Violet would all be somewhere in the list were it not restricted.
@Poppy - impossible, thereās no Opeth, Deafheaven, Converge, Kayo Dot, or Run the Jewels. what are you on about, mate? |
tectactoe
08.26.20 | @helperoni - ā¤ļø |
JohnnyoftheWell
08.26.20 | Hey, a big list. Did not expect to see The Book About My Idle Plot on a Vague Anxiety that high or Yank Crime not in the top 10 or The Future Is Cancelled at all, but most of these are mucho delicious yes yes yes |
tectactoe
08.27.20 | Danke, Johnny-son. First heard the toe album back in either my freshman or sophomore year of college and love the music but was always super disappointed that it didn't have vocals, Ć la something like AMERICAN FOOTBALL. However after recently revisiting and falling in love with it all over again, I couldn't imagine it with vocals. I guess toe knows better than I do. (To be fair - 'Yank Crime' is #11 !)
And...is the general feeling toward 'The Future Is Cancelled' more ambivalent/incongruous than I originally realized? Not that it would change my personal opinion of it either way, but I always thought it was considered one of the better and more adventurous entries in a genre that is saturated with total garbage. Yet it's one of the most controversial picks every time I've hinted at an extended list of my favorite. I guess it's a bit of an outlier here (along with e.g. Glocca Morra) but it definitely gets a bit of heat. |
Winesburgohio
08.27.20 | your number 1 is my number 1 and consequently you are my number 1: our lists would be eerily similar |
Winesburgohio
08.27.20 | and your number 5,6 and 8 are probably my 5,6 and 8 this is uncanny |
SandwichBubble
08.27.20 | I knew you liked 65, but it's in your top 100 albums? Wowee.
Honestly, it's probably in my top 100 too. |
Snake.
08.27.20 | pretty refreshing to find 33 and 44 on here |
Dewinged
08.27.20 | I might have told you this already tec, but damn, you have good taste. Great list. |
tectactoe
08.27.20 | @Wines- we need to get together for beers or wine and cheese or something sometimes soon. Why does NZ have to be so far away? š
@Sandwich- Yāknow, there are several other more recent 4.5ās and such that I kept off this list out of fear of having succumbed to recency bias, plus I think longevity has some correlation to personal feelings. But that was one exception- Iād listened to it somewhere around ten or eleven times within the first couple days of having heard it and I still regularly listen to it without having grown even the slightest bit tired of it (helps that itās only 27 min long, too). It excels so well in a very niche genre in which itās easy to suck. āāTwas love at first sight and then some.
@Snake- šš¼ Love seeing more Mare Vitalis praise. The alchemy of post-rock and midwest emo is simply exquisite.
@Dewi- god bless, brother. And ditto, of courseā after all, I have you to thank for #26, which has the honor of being the only ā19 album to make the cut. (It was inevitable. That record is goddamn flawless.) |
Joeman82
08.27.20 | The emo cuts on this make me :] |
Ryus
08.27.20 | hmm twee is the best, might have to check 65 |
Pheromone
08.27.20 | Nice list - I'm so unsurprised by these choices for some reason aha, maybe its that I know you more from the film lists. Love seeing Iggy on here |
Demon of the Fall
08.27.20 | Just realised Fire! Orchestra is on here, bold move, I like it. Nice mix of old and new on here as well, it certainly has a better balance than mine would (Iām working on it, at least Glenn Branca might squeeze into mine now :-)). |
Pheromone
08.27.20 | also 74 is a top 10 oat - good stuff |
tectactoe
08.27.20 | @Joe - :] being from southeast Michigan, i would be remiss were i too omit my MWE staples.
@Ryus - if you're into twee, definitely give it a shot. i'm not even all that into twee but this hits different. it's like...disheveled pseduo-lo-fi twee and it is excellent.
@Pheromone - Perhaps us film dweebs gravitate toward the same, equally dweeby music?! And I agree - The Feelies deserve more love.
@Demon - Hah! I will patiently await said list and expect to see at least one Branca and one This Heat album at the very least :^) |
Trifolium
08.27.20 | I love many of these Mr. Tec!
Most notably: 10 that high makes me very happy and 88 is the Best Album Ever (kind of) so I'm glad it's here.
Also nice that these kinds of lists show what kind of music someone likes! |
tectactoe
08.27.20 | Thanks, Trif. Looking back, 'Dummy' does feel a little under-ranked. But if I kept questioning myself I'd never publish the damn list haha.
Also added some HMs. |
Yotimi
08.27.20 | Legit list. Love plenty of these |
unclereich
08.27.20 | Good old fashioned sput 100 list I dig it. Remember when we couldn't add 100 entries to a list? |
ArsMoriendi
08.27.20 | I've heard 27 of them and like 24, so good list I think
Even if it has 3 albums I don't like on it |
robertsona
08.27.20 | top of the list is n i c e, laughing stock is a great #1 choice |
Trifolium
08.27.20 | Which 3 are you talking about Ars? Burzum, Godflesh and Daughters? |
Demon of the Fall
08.27.20 | I was gonna cancel my life because I thought Ars had beaten me (lol?)...
Turns out Iāve heard 40/100, which is a relief. Still not good enough mind! |
Ryus
08.27.20 | streetcleaner would def make my top 100
think ive heard about 80 of these total lol |
tectactoe
08.27.20 | @Yotimi, uncle- thanks dudes. And yes, good old sput and its brittle coding framework.
@Ars - I'd be curious to know which three have you most perturbed, though I can probably guess at least one of 'em.
@Bigglesworth - there can only be one
@robertson - *kiss emjoi* |
Yotimi
08.27.20 | Heard 92 of these and like all but 2 of them. Maybe I'm just easy to please |
MillionDead
08.27.20 | This list is pretty immaculate, I must admit. I love you for including 77. You have good taste. |
tectactoe
08.27.20 | @Yotimi - now you know I've gotta ask. which two are in the 'dislike' pile? I'm assuming at least one of them is 'The Future Is Cancelled' (that seems to be everyone's whipping boy thus far) - what's the other, out of curiosity?!
@Million - Thank you and yes, I love Today Is the Day and 'Willpower' has always been my favorite (though most of their discography I haven't revisited in a very long time). Love that GOODFELLAS sound byte to open up the record, too :^) |
Yotimi
08.27.20 | Yep I have that at a 2.5. Also don't love Lust for life even though I love the stooges. But I know I'm in the minority there |
tectactoe
08.27.20 | Oh wow, never wouldāve guessed that one. Kinda makes sense, though, considering I could never really get into The Stooges myself (whoops, I know), but that album was so different, even compared to Iggyās other solo stuff, that it worked for me in all the ways his rawer, punkier stuff never did. |
tectactoe
08.28.20 | One of the toughest choices was whether to include āTo Be Kindā or āFilthā as my Swans pick. |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
08.28.20 | cool list although 63 sticks out like a sore kiddy-diddling thumb |
ArsMoriendi
08.28.20 | @tec: 84 (shhh), 78, and 29, though I do have them all 3'd or 2.5'd so I guess I don't dispise them. Though I do dispise Peacebone...
96, 88, 76, 70, 41, 23, 21 are all in my 5s though :) |
Ryus
08.28.20 | let it be known for the record that ars has loveless 2'd, a transgression of the highest order |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
08.28.20 | Honestly kind of love that |
ArsMoriendi
08.28.20 | I thought I have it 2.5'd, but I guess I have it 2'd.
I didn't like it upon multiple listens so I don't feel bad, listen to Cocteau Twins, they're miles better |
tectactoe
08.28.20 | @Potts- Oye, surprised more people havenāt pointed that entry out tbh, or perhaps everyone has just suppressed them from their memory such that they no longer register in conscious thought. š
@Ars- Took me a while to come around to Loveless, and for a while thought I never would. A couple years ago, You Made Me Realise was my favorite MBV release. I do respect that 2/5, though. |
MillionDead
08.28.20 | Some of my bros from my old town played a Loveless cover night at a local restaurant venue and it was sick. lol |
coachcake
08.28.20 | much respect for 44 being here, tho I'd have the debut there instead |
tectactoe
08.28.20 | My high school years were consumed with a lot of emo and pop-punk albums that didn't make the list (the biggest probably being 'Through Being Cool'), not because I dislike those albums now or think they're bad (they're not), but they scratch such specific itches that I rarely have nowadays. I didn't discover the Glocca Morra album until I already graduated college but there was something about it that I found instantly addictive, combining my favorite aspects of twinkly emo with a rougher-edged aggression, *without* going full-on disheveled and atonal mess like The Brave Little Abacus or Cap'n Jazz. It has stuck with me every since and, in all honesty, probably one of the albums I've listened to start-to-finish the largest amount of times. |
Claystation
08.28.20 | Great list. There's a bunch of good stuff I haven't heard of (e.g. This Heat, Glenn Branca, Glocca Morra, Ved Buens Ende) that I'm going to check out now. Thanks Tec! |
tectactoe
08.28.20 | Awesome - those first two (Deceit and The Ascension) are elegant beasts, I do hope you enjoy them. Just Married is probably one of the bigger outliers on the list, but there's something inside of me that keeps clutching tight to at least one MWE/Pop-punk release. (For a while it was On the Impossible Past, but Just Married blows that away imo.) Written in Waters is pure awesomeness. |
bgillesp
08.28.20 | Never heard of 4. Might should fix that |
Colton
08.28.20 | I've never heard of Talk Talk but a post rock album with a 4.5 average is very intriguing, gonna check that one out |

08.28.20 | @cole it's super unique, sounds nothing like standard post-rock

09.01.20 | Niceeeee, glad you like it. It's a grower, too.
I recommend checking out both This Heat's debut album as well as their 'John Peel Sessions' recordings. All of 'em finally available on US Spotify. The debut a little more "experimental" than 'Deceit', but totally awesome in its own way. |
Yotimi
09.01.20 | And the track Health and Efficiency, probably their best song |
tectactoe
09.01.20 | Good catch, forgot about that one. It is definitely amazing, and yes probably one of their best tracks. (Though I think my personal favorite is the recording of 'Horizontal Hold' on the John Peel Sessions...absolutely massive.) |
Yotimi
09.01.20 | For sure, that's my 2nd fave |
Demon of the Fall
09.01.20 | Yeah everyone here should check Glenn Branca and This Heat (re the latter, personally I prefer the debut/Peel sessions, but either way is good). |

09.02.20 | True you can't really go wrong with This Heat.
Or Branca, for that matter. |

https://rateyourmusic.com/list/tectactoe/top-100-favorite-albums-of-all-time-january-2021/1/
I will keep the sput list updated to the latest. Going to try and keep this updated twice a year. Jan/July |
protokute
01.14.21 | Very happy to see 83 here :) |
tectactoe
01.14.21 | Very underrated! Surprised it only has 61 ratings on sput. Definitely one of the most overlooked sunshine/psych pop albums of the Sixties! |
Demon of the Fall
01.14.21 | Argh just a reminder that this list is gooood man, just hoping mine will be up to snuff when the time comes (Iām aiming for 2k ratings, then Iāll revisit the contenders/do one). Itās my only music related target for the year. |
tectactoe
01.14.21 | Thanks, Demon. Preemptively looking forward to that eventual list. Honestly I wish I'd been more patient like you. Over the last six months, I ended up revisiting a lot of "contenders" that I hadn't heard in several years, confirming that they should've been on my original version of the list (e.g. DEATHCONSCIOUSNESS), hence the somewhat large number of changes between June 2020's iteration, and this one now. Hopefully it remains a little more stable going forward, though I kind of feel like the bottom ~30 entries or so will always be pretty volatile and constantly in flux. (That's why I'm keeping the whole log of changes on RYM - makes it fun to see how my change constantly shifts with time.) |
Demon of the Fall
01.14.21 | 7 of your top 13, maybe 8, (outside chance of 9) will likely make my top 100. Either you have great taste or we both suck.
Yeah I often get the urge to catalogue my favourites for future ref, then I get cold feet because it doesnāt meet the āstandardsā I want. I did one, once. Not sure about the one album per artist thing, it certainly adds variety but then is it really your top 100? I can see the argument either way.
I think the idea of revisiting my contenders is a reminder to myself more than anything, it can be easy to file away favourites and call it a day - often I try and āpreserveā their greatness which can sometimes result in outright neglect. |
ReefaJones
01.14.21 | I dig it |

01.14.21 | needs some Joni Mitchell and Tom Waits though |
tectactoe
01.14.21 | "Often I try and āpreserveā their greatness which can sometimes result in outright neglect."
This is way too true.
"needs some Joni Mitchell and Tom Waits though"
Admittedly two pretty big blind spots. Only heard BLUE by Joni - liked it, didn't love it sadly. My Waits catalog includes CLOSING TIME, SWORDFISHTROMBONES, RAIN DOGS, and BONE MACHINE. Only one of those I thoroughly enjoyed was CLOSING TIME, alas. If you have any other specific recommendations for either of them, I'm willing to listen! |
ReefaJones
01.14.21 | obvious choices would be Mule Variations for Tom Waits and Hejira for Joni Mitchell. Both are masterpieces in my opinion |
tectactoe
01.15.21 | Thanks for the recs!! Will check both of them soon. I am due to revisit BLUE, tooā it has been a while. |
