Melodic Eargasm
As everyone should know, I am a Melodic Death Metal orientated dude. Here are my 12 fav. bands that are by Wikipedia considered to be Melodic Death Metal. I did the list in Alum format, so I could write deions. |
1 | | In Flames Colony
In Flames was probably the first melodic death metal I ever liked, and still at the moment I count this as my fav. band. Guitarists Bjorn and Jesper show incredibly well that good riffs doesn't have to match with talent. Even the 3 latter releases weren't as bad as everyone said. They also have written "Evil in a Closet" which I still see as the best song ever written. |
2 | | Hypocrisy Virus
These guys have an extremely apocalyptic feeling with their songs. I really like that. Songs such as Living to Die, The Final Chapter and The Departure just full of emotion. These songs would pe perfect for when the end of the world is nearby. Peter is a f*cking legend! |
3 | | Insomnium Since the Day it All Came Down
If anyone would know these guys, you're lucky. Insomnium is an extremely underrated band from out of Finland. With low growls but high and very melodic guitar parts, these guys manage to create the most somber masterpieces. If you like Opeth, then I'm sure you'll like these guys too. Closing Words and Song of the Forlorn Son are masterpieces that should be regarded as classics. |
4 | | Opeth Blackwater Park
Melodic Death Metal with a progressive edge on it. Can it be even better? Mikael is one of the best vocalists of the whole metal genre. Songs such as Bleak and Drapery Falls are repetive, yet beatiful made and never lose interest. Why did Martin Lopez leave!!!!!!!! :( |
5 | | Children Of Bodom Follow The Reaper
Like Opeth, CoB fuses Melodic Death with a different genre: Power metal. The melodic guitar and keyboard really shine on this. There are enough solo's to satisfy the biggest solo-freak. Janne and Alexi (and apparently also Roope) are incredible. They have speed that cannot be matched (okay, it can, but that doesn't matter) |
6 | | Carcass Heartwork
Although they used to be Grindcore (it was Grindcore, was it?) their latter albums were more melodic. Also these guys inspired bands such as At the Gates and In Flames to set up the whole Gothenburg genre. Because of that I have lots of respect to these guys, plus they are very accomplished musici. Songs as Black Star and Heartwork are as powerful as they are melodic. |
7 | | Dark Tranquillity Haven
Although somewhat lesser known, these guys were also involved with the new branch of melodic death metal. These guys are somewhat more based on speed but yet manages to keep the melodic edge alive. If they would just put some work on their diversity... |
8 | | At The Gates Terminal Spirit Disease
Also the starter of Gothenburg Metal. ATG have some highly classified melodic tunes. It's sad that most of their other work just fails to impress. The Beatiful Wound is however too beatiful, and brutal. |
9 | | Arch Enemy Wages of Sin
With a stunning vocalist (why? because it's not a he but a she) and melodic structured solo's this band is pretty awesome. It's however a shame that they rely more on rhythmic riffing than any Melodic Death Metal band else. Ravenous and Enemy Within are chilling though. |
10 | | Arsis A Diamond For Disease
The most technical MD band out there. They have songs which clock in between the 2 and the 14 minutes, and they are sickkkkk. Sometimes it's however too un-catchy to keep it interesting, but the riffing makes up much of it. |
11 | | Scar Symmetry Pitch Black Progress
Another band that looks like Opeth and Dark Tranquillity. These guys however pull it out quite well. The Illusionist, for example, starts with a floating synth loop. The vocals are either very low growling or rather high singing. It's a shame that I don't know enough of them. |
12 | | Amon Amarth Versus The World
The last of the MD bands I know and really like. Amon has very pleasant tunes, but sometimes are too simple yet sloppy to maintain interest. The riffing structures are mostly pretty very simple, but the lead guitar is very skilled. Although the last of the list, it's definiately a check-out band. |
